January 1, 2015 - Mary, The Holy Mother of God

Mary, Mother of God

Numbers 6: 22-27

Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, 'Speak to Aaron and his sons and say:

"This is how you must bless the Israelites. You will say:

May Yahweh bless you and keep you.
May Yahweh let his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you.
May Yahweh show you his face
    and bring you peace."

This is how they must call down my name on the Israelites, and then I shall bless them.'

Psalm 67: 2-3, 5, 6, 8

Then the earth will acknowledge your ways,
and all nations your power to save.

Let the nations praise you,
God, let all the nations praise you.

Let the nations praise you, God,
let all the nations praise you.

The earth has yielded its produce;
God, our God has blessed us.

the earth rocked,                                     Pause
the heavens pelted down rain at the presence of God,
at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

Galatians 4: 4-7

but when the completion of the time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law, so that we could receive adoption as sons. As you are sons, God has sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son crying, ‘Abba, Father’; and so you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir, by God’s own act.

Luke 2: 16-21

So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them. As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had been told.

When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.

Mary, Mother of God

January 1, 2012

I usually try to write a fresh homily every Sunday, one that's not yet been printed in any of my books, but as I looked back over homilies I have preached on this date, I found one that I thought was interesting enough to repeat. We celebrate New Year's Day today, and most countries in the world do, but not everyone. Many cultures have their own New Year's Day. For example, the Jewish new year begins on Rosh Hashanah which will begin this year at sunset on September 16, 2012, and lasts until nightfall on the 18th (two full days) (that would give you a good hangover). Back in 1990, I was in Israel on Rosh Hashanah at the Wailing Wall, the place where the Temple stood before the Romans destroyed it in 70 AD and I witnessed the rabbis blowing of rams' horns to start their New Year. The Chinese have their own New Year celebration, which will be on Jan. 23 of 2012. It will begin the year of the dragon. The Moslem New Year began on Nov. 26, 2011. Their next New Year will be Nov. 14, 2012. Their year is 11 to 12 days shorter than ours. We tend to think everyone in the world should think the way we do. There are many other cultures who celebrate their own new year at times and seasons different than we do. January 1 was chosen as the start of the New Year by the early Romans in 153 BC. Prior to that date, they celebrated the New Year in the spring which has a certain logic to it since winter is over and nature starts to come alive at that time. In 153 BC the Roman senate chose January 1 as the beginning of a new year because that was the day when the Roman consuls took office. (Maybe they used the start of the New Year to give themselves an increase in salary and they didn't have to wait three months until the beginning of spring to start their salary.) It is said they celebrated with "boisterous joy, superstitious practices and gross orgies." The early Christians made January 1 a day of penance as a reaction against the excesses of the pagans. Eventually Christians designated January 1 as the first feast in the Church calendar dedicated to Mary, Jesus' mother. Incidentally, many European countries didn't officially make January 1 the start of the new year until the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Now practically all big cities of the world celebrate on January 1 even if they have their own new year, like China.

The Church calendar begins a new liturgical year on the first Sunday of Advent. For the Church January 1 presents us with several themes. It is first of all the octave of Christmas. Christmas is too important a feast for just a one-day celebration, so the liturgy celebrates Christmas solemnly for eight days. After today, the liturgy continues to celebrate Christmas, but less solemnly, until the feast of the Baptism of our Lord which this year is on Monday, January 9th, the day after the feast of the Epiphany. Today also recalls the circumcision of Jesus, which traditionally took place for a Jewish boy on the eighth day after birth. It's also the day on which a child was officially named - although both Joseph and Mary were told ahead of time by an angel that his name would be Jesus - a name which means "God saves." On this day we might reflect for a moment how respectful we are of this name by which we are to be saved. For many years now the popes have designated this day as a day of prayer for peace, which is so badly needed in today's world.

There are a lot of reasons to gather in prayer today. A new year begins new opportunities to grow in God's grace and favor, new opportunities to learn, new opportunities to discover ways to treat the ills we suffer from, new ways to heal from what we have lost in the past, new ways, hopefully, to create a world in which the poor are fed and in which we can all live together in peace. I might mention that today is an anniversary for our own parish too. On December 29, 20 years ago, St. Boniface and St. Patrick's parishes merged. It is something the people of our two parishes can be proud of that the merger went so well. This new year gives us new opportunities to prosper and grow and serve the members of our parish and to share God's word with our neighbors in Northside. We also honor Mary, the Mother of God, in this, the most ancient feast of Mary in the Church calendar. We ask her to intercede for us that this may be a blessed year for all of us. Amen

From Blue Book 14

January 1, l997

R. I went to Mass at Fr. Carter’s and I felt Jesus give Himself to me when Father gave me the Eucharist. I saw Jesus. I saw Jesus give me the host and Jesus gave Himself to me.

Oh, I truly love the Mass. I love it so much. My whole life is centered around my attending Mass. Nothing here is like this contact of man with Divinity - nothing feels like this presence of God.

I am so one with God at the Mass.

I know Christ is truly present in the Mass. The priest is another Christ. Christ is the chief priest and celebrant. It is Christ who celebrates the Mass.

I know the immense amount of grace that is released at the Consecration. I want to be enveloped in that union with Divinity, to be so one with Jesus giving Himself to His Father. I want the greatest, the absolute greatest graces to flow on this earth. I want to be one with God and one with all men. I want His glory to shine on us and make us whole, whole in Him. I want His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. I want oneness with God and with all men.

Oh, the great gift of the Mass, when God gives Himself to man! I want to fall on my knees and adore my God who is truly present.

Oh, I want to give Him the tenderest, greatest, caressing love and honor. I want to adore God in this act of greatest love. He gives Himself to me and I give myself to Him. I want to love Him, love Him so much!

My longing for the Mass is so deep within my heart. I know the great intimacies He has shared with me in the Mass. To be one with Divinity causes my heart to burn and to long for this moment continually.

I want to be so one in this furnace of endless love. I want this deep presence of God in my being. I know Him. I want Him. I want to adore Him. He is the Light, the Light of the world. He brings joy to our hearts and brightness to our eyes. He shines on us and we are made whole in Him.

I want to thank Him for the great gifts He has given to me and oh, how ungrateful I have been. When He gave me great gifts, I did not appreciate them. I offend Him by my ingratitude where there could have been love and thankfulness.

January 1, 1997

Oh how I love the Mass. I wait, yearn, I want to go to the Mass. It is there I am taken to the heights of heaven and I connect with the Almighty God in such intensity. His presence, oh I love His presence, my heat burns to be in the presence of God and to receive the Almighty God within me. I scarce can breathe, when He comes to me, the bridegroom of my soul. I know Him in such intimacy as He gives Himself to me. It is in these moments after Communion He implants knowledge of Himself into My being and I know so many things that reveal insights into the Mystery of His love.

Oh the Mass, the greatest gift of love between God and man. The Almighty God gives Himself completely to us and we give ourselves to Him. The Bread of Life comes to me and outpours His love, His life to me. The sacrifice is God, He is the Lamb of God, and He gives Himself to the Father, He gives Himself to us. I experience an intense sharing in His divine love. Oh God, open our eyes and give us lights that we may see more clearly the great gift You give us, that we may in this great act of love, give ourselves more completely, that we will worship You and praise You and bow down and adore our most beauteous God. I love You, I love You, oh I love You God, Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Enlighten us that we will treasure this great gift given to us. God gives Himself to man.

The incarnation goes on in us. The Church, the individual Christian and the world are in the state of becoming. The Church is Mother.

Men are so independent, they do not think they need a Mother. We go through the spiritual womb of Mary.
