                R. From the Second Reading

                    St. Paul was responding
                to answers that the Corinthians
                had asked him —

He talks about the beauty of
                    marriage, but he addresses
                    celibacy —

                They thought that the world
                    would pass away soon —

                Today's Readings

Deuteronomy 18: 15-20

Yahweh your God will raise up a prophet like me; you will listen to him. This is exactly what you asked Yahweh your God to do—at Horeb, on the day of the Assembly, when you said, "Never let me hear the voice of Yahweh my God or see this great fire again, or I shall die." Then Yahweh said to me, "What they have said is well said. From their own brothers I shall raise up a prophet like yourself; I shall put my words into his mouth and he will tell them everything I command him. Anyone who refuses to listen to my words, spoken by him in my name, will have to render an account to me. But the prophet who presumes to say something in my name which I have not commanded him to say, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die."

Psalm 95: 1-2, 6-9

Come, let us cry out with joy to Yahweh,
acclaim the rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving,
acclaim him with music.

Come, let us bow low and do reverence;
kneel before Yahweh who made us!
For he is our God,
and we the people of his sheepfold,
the flock of his hand.

If only you would listen to him today!
Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,
as at the time of Massah in the desert,
when your ancestors challenged me,
put me to the test, and saw what I could do!

1 Corinthians 7: 32-35

I should like you to have your minds free from all worry. The unmarried man gives his mind to the Lord’s affairs and to how he can please the Lord; but the man who is married gives his mind to the affairs of this world and to how he can please his wife, and he is divided in mind. So, too, the unmarried woman, and the virgin, gives her mind to the Lord’s affairs and to being holy in body and spirit; but the married woman gives her mind to the affairs of this world and to how she can please her husband. I am saying this only to help you, not to put a bridle on you, but so that everything is as it should be, and you are able to give your undivided attention to the Lord.

Mark 1: 21-28

They went as far as Capernaum, and at once on the Sabbath he went into the synagogue and began to teach. And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them with authority.

And at once in their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shouted, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked it saying, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him. The people were so astonished that they started asking one another what it all meant, saying, ‘Here is a teaching that is new, and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.’ And his reputation at once spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 1, 2009

INTRODUCTION – (Deut 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 7:32-35; Mark 1:21-28) If you are married, our second reading from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians might be difficult for you to understand. So I would like to give a little background to today’s second reading. The passage comes from a section of the letter where Paul is answering one of several questions he received in a letter from the Corinthians. This question is about marriage. Somehow the Corinthians decided marriage was not a holy thing and it would be better to live a life of celibacy. In Paul’s answer he first affirmed the value of marriage. However, though he stressed it is not for everyone, he also wanted to affirm the value of celibacy. In today’s passage he is addressing those who were not yet married or who were widowed and points out the advantages of remaining in such a state. The early Church, including Paul, thought Jesus was going to return very soon and the world would come to an end. To quote Paul, he said, “time is short” and “the world as we know it is passing away.” If it sounds as if Paul is overemphasizing the spiritual advantages of celibacy, consider how you might view things in your life if you thought that in a very short time the world would end and Jesus’ return was immanent. Your priorities would probably change considerably.

Now let me shift back to today’s first reading. Moses and God’s people had finally arrived at the Promised Land after several generations of slavery in Egypt and a long journey through the desert. Moses knew that God was calling him to leave this world and God’s people would cross the Jordan and enter the Promised Land without him. Basically he is saying “goodbye and good luck.” He assures them God would not leave them without direction or leadership. God would send them another prophet like himself who would speak God’s word to them. We usually think of a prophet as a person who foretells the future and sometimes the prophet did, but the best definition of a prophet is at the end of today’s first reading: one who speaks God’s word. Our first reading prepares us for the gospel where Jesus speaks God’s word with power and authority.

HOMILY – Moses promised, “A prophet like me will the Lord, your God raise up for you from your own kin; to him shall you listen.” God did raise up many prophets but none could compare with Jesus. Jesus spoke God’s word as Moses said he would, but Jesus was even more than someone who spoke God’s word, he was God’s Son. When Moses said “to him shall you listen,” he was not foretelling the future, on the contrary, he was telling God’s people what they should do. Often they refused to listen. In this way Jesus experienced the same fate as the other prophets.

From the beginning of Mark’s gospel, St. Mark wants us to know who Jesus is. He introduced his gospel with the words: “the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Within a few verses we hear the testimony of John the Baptist that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit. A few verses later Mark tells us that at Jesus’ baptism a voice came from the heavens saying to Jesus: “You are my beloved Son. With you I am well pleased.” Now, not yet even halfway through Mark’s first chapter, he gives us more information about Jesus, but from an unexpected source, the devil. The people in the synagogue recognize the power in Jesus’ teaching and that he is a prophet; that is, he speaks the word of God with a freshness and a power they had never seen before. But the devil is no dummy. The devil catches on immediately. The devil cries out from the person who is possessed: “I know who you are – the Holy One of God.” The devil is not only perceptive and clever but would remember everything. The devil would remember the announcement of the angels to the shepherds when Jesus was born: “Today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.” The devil would have remembered the visit of the magi when Jesus was born. This is the first miracle St. Mark tells us about. He not only wants us to know who Jesus is but he wants us to know Jesus was not afraid of the evil powers in this world and was willing to face them head on. Let me conclude with two ideas:

1) Jesus is admired by many people today. He is considered a good person, a person who cared greatly about others and a great teacher. The Moslems even consider him a great prophet. But that’s all he is in the minds of many people. We, as Christians, see him differently. He is not someone whom we can choose to follow or ignore depending on whether we agree with him or not. He is the Holy One of God; he is God’s Son. When he speaks to us, as Moses said, we shall listen to him. (Not that we always do, but it’s what we should do. That’s one of the reasons why we come to Mass on Sunday. The whole first part of the Mass focuses on hearing the word and reflecting on it.)

2) The devil: We don’t hear much about the devil except in jokes. But the devil is not a joke. The Scriptures take him seriously. Some sicknesses such as epilepsy or mental illnesses had been attributed to the devil in past centuries. We now believe they have other causes. In my experience as a priest and counselor, I definitely believe there are evil powers at work in the world, which are called devils. I’ve never had any dramatic experiences like in today’s gospel or like the movie The Exorcist, which, by the way was, in most respects, based on a true story. I am convinced the devil never takes a vacation or a day off. The devil doesn’t even need to sleep at night. Mostly I believe the devil is at work, and we don’t even know he’s there. He helps us in our weaknesses to make the wrong choices. For example, if we’re envious, the devil gives us suggestions to help us give in to that trait, and the same with other weaknesses, such as hatred, out of control anger, laziness, pride, lust, greed, gluttony, etc. But there is one stronger than the devil and who can help us if we listen to him. Amen.

                R. The prophet is to speak God's
                    word —

                In the Gospel Jesus speaks
                    God's word with power
                    and authority

Let us sing to God —

Let us not harden our hearts —

                Case 1

A preacher and his wife were
                very poor and almost destitute.
They had 14 children and she
                was pregnant.
                Should she abort the baby?

                Case 2

                The Father was sick
                The Mother had tuberculosis —
                They had 4 children —
                One child had tuberculosis.
They had lost a child —
                The mother was pregnant
                Should she abort the baby?

                Case 3

                There was a young unmarried
                teenager — she became
                pregnant —
                She was engaged to another
                    man —
                The father of the baby
                    was not the man
                    she was engaged to.
                Should she abort the baby?

In case 1 if they aborted the
                    baby it would be
                    John Wesley, one of the
                    greatest Evangelists
                    of the 19th Century.

In case 2 -  if they had
                    aborted the baby, they
                    would abort Beethoven.

In case 3 — the baby was
                    Jesus Christ!

                Pro-choice people don't consider
                    the infant wants to live.

                Pro choice says we don't
                    know when life begins.
                    Fr. Joe says the DNA
shows it is a human life —

Some say - it doesn't look like
                    a human being — does
                    a one year old look
                    like a 50 year old —

                Killing a defenseless
                    human being is a great
                    evil.

                3,288 babies are aborted
                    per day as a statistic
                    from 2009.

                We who hold life sacred
                    should not be forced
                    to support laws
                    that help abortion.

                What helps evil to continue
                    is the good man does
                    nothing.

Excerpt of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, by Louis J. Puhl, S.J.

136. THE FOURTH DAY

        A MEDITATION ON TWO STANDARDS

The one of Christ, our supreme leader and lord,
the other of Lucifer, the deadly enemy of our
human nature

PRAYER.   The usual preparatory prayer.

window at a former Jesuit Seminary

137. FIRST PRELUDE.   This is the history. Here it will be that Christ calls and wants all beneath His standard, and Lucifer, on the other hand, wants all under his.

138. SECOND PRELUDE.   This is a mental representation of the place. It will be here to see a great plain, comprising the whole region about Jerusalem, where the sovereign Commander-in-Chief of all the good is Christ our Lord; and another plain about the region of Babylon, where the chief of the enemy is Lucifer.

139. THIRD PRELUDE.   This is to ask for what I desire. Here it will be to ask for a knowledge of the deceits of the rebel chief and help to guard myself against them; and also to ask for a knowledge of the true life exemplified in the sovereign and true Commander, and the grace to imitate Him.

FIRST PART

THE STANDARD OF SATAN

140. FIRST POINT.   Imagine you see the chief of all the enemy in the vast plain about Babylon, seated on a great throne of fire and smoke, his appearance inspiring horror and terror.

141. SECOND POINT.   Consider how he summons innumerable demons, and scatters them, some to one city and some to another, throughout the whole world, so that no province, no place, no state of life, no individual is overlooked.

142. THIRD POINT.   Consider the address he makes to them, how he goads them on to lay snares for men and bind them with chains. First they are to tempt them to covet riches (as Satan himself is accustomed to do in most cases) that they may the more easily attain the empty honors of this world, and then come to overweening pride.

The first step, then, will be riches, the second honor, the third pride. From these three steps the evil one leads to all other vices.

SECOND PART

THE STANDARD OF CHRIST

143.   In a similar way, we are to picture to ourselves the sovereign and true Commander, Christ our Lord.

144. FIRST POINT.   Consider Christ our Lord, standing in a lowly place in a great plain about the region of Jerusalem, His appearance beautiful and attractive.

145. SECOND POINT.   Consider how the Lord of all the world chooses so many persons, apostles, disciples, etc., and sends them throughout the whole world to spread His sacred doctrine among all men, no matter what their state or condition.

146. THIRD POINT.   . . .

                R. Abandon yourself to God's Will in love —

Pope John Paul II knew the devastation
of war — what happened in Poland —
We know the Divine Mercy —

Divine Mercy

                R. Pope John Paul lost his mom at an
early age and also lost his
                    brother —

His father was a man of prayer —

We see suffering is meant to lead us
                    closer to God —

                Living and watching the destruction
                    of culture; religion suffering
                    under the Nazi's

We can compare this devastation how
                    satan comes in, in those
trying to build a vineyard, a garden
of hope and satan comes pressing
on men to tear up what has been
established for their own power —

Satan wants men to change rules
                    of order to disorder —

Satan wants to tear apart and
                    he uses men as instruments
                    to oppose harmony and love
                    from the heart —

Satan wants men and women in
                    marriages to act-out against
those they love and to tear
apart places of love and unity —

In seeing the tearing apart of
Poland at the time when Pope John Paul II
was younger before he was pope-
                    we can take this one
                    step forward to watching satan
                    press on the world —
tearing apart — like a poison - working
in men's hearts - meant for love —
                        for seeking dominance for
                        dominance sake — Power-over
                        others for pride

                Jesus wants love —
                God is love —

We were created in the image and
                    likeness of God —

                Love is a choice —

We have a free will to choose life
                    or to hold out —
                    make others suffer
                    inflicting torment on the just
who seek to do God's will —

To pray for an increase of faith,
hope and love against a back-drop
                    of war —

Where we are called to witness to the
                    truth — to keep ourselves
                    clean, pure, loving — living
                    by God's laws —

Recognizing that God has called the
Shepherds of Christ to bring love — the
love of the 2 Hearts, the New Adam and
the New Eve as the model to
                    the hearts of men —

Where is the stage of life when
seen on the surface of the
earth — to play our part
in this drama of life as
                    God the Father directs —
the free-will of the actors to
bring God's truth to this world —
Not a truth of being a human
                            doer, but one of being
                            likened to Jesus, more
and more in our hearts —

                Living under God —
                God's rules are set —

                The world is rebelling against
                    the rules of God —

The man knowing — Jesus is the
most perfect man who lived —
He lived in obedience to the Father's will

Jesus lived not in combative argumentation,
                    but bringing the meekness and
                    gentleness of His manly Sacred
                    Heart to the world.

It is an act of the will to choose
                    to love —

Love is a choice — the sacrifice is
                    being regulated under the will
                    of God — seeking God's will —
Loving as a man, likened to Christ
                    — working with
                    others, in love, according
to the Heavenly Father's Plan —

In the wars — we saw dead bodies —
                    mutilated — religious persecuted —
                    culture suffered —

As men, like David's Son, Absalom
wanted to advance ahead to be
king — not caring of the beauty
                    of Jerusalem, David had
                    built —
Absalom wanted to come in —
                        take over

David was anointed by God —
                    Absalom was fighting the
                    Father's Plan —

                The Pope, the Cardinals, the
                    Bishops descendants of
                    the Apostles —

The priests — the gifts God gives
                    us —

                Encountering God —
                    the center of every human
                        life, is God —
                    When we lose this focus,
                        we are lost —

Jesus came and took on human
                    flesh, to show us how
                    to be a man —

                Jesus, our teacher,
Jesus, whipped and hung on a
tree, by the sinful men —

We see the beautiful saints and
                    the martyrs that followed
in the footprints of Jesus —
                    their selflessness —
their shedding of their blood —
                    some tortured, beheaded,
                        crucified —

So we see the Church, as it
                    is today, by the sacrifices
                    of the saints —

                The selflessness of Jesus, given
                    through the imitation of Him
                    by the martyrs —

                How important our increase
                    of faith is —
                    Having deeper hope and
                    Living likened to Jesus in
                        love — selflessness —
                        order, harmony and
                        sacrifice —

Jesus gives to us the Holy Sacrifice
of the Mass, through the hands of
                    our beloved priests —
                    Faith, hope and love —

When the angel appeared at Fatima,
here is what the angel said to
                    pray —
                    regarding faith, hope and love.

"My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You! I ask pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You."

Then, rising he said: "Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications."

A Prayer for Intimacy with the Lamb, the Bridegroom of the Soul

Oh Lamb of God, Who take away the sins of the world, come and act on my soul most intimately. I surrender myself, as I ask for the grace to let go, to just be as I exist in You and You act most intimately on my soul. You are the Initiator. I am the soul waiting Your favors as You act in me. I love You. I adore You. I worship You. Come and possess my soul with Your Divine Grace, as I experience You most intimately.

A Prayer before the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

Let me be a holy sacrifice and unite with God in the sacrament of His greatest love.

I want to be one in Him in this act of love, where He gives Himself to me and I give myself as a sacrifice to Him. Let me be a holy sacrifice as I become one with Him in this my act of greatest love to Him.

Let me unite with Him more, that I may more deeply love Him. May I help make reparation to His adorable Heart and the heart of His Mother, Mary. With greatest love, I offer myself to You and pray that You will accept my sacrifice of greatest love. I give myself to You and unite in Your gift of Yourself to me. Come and possess my soul.

Cleanse me, strengthen me, heal me. Dear Holy Spirit act in the heart of Mary to make me more and more like Jesus.

Father, I offer this my sacrifice, myself united to Jesus in the Holy Spirit to You. Help me to love God more deeply in this act of my greatest love.

Give me the grace to grow in my knowledge, love and service of You and for this to be my greatest participation in the Mass. Give me the greatest graces to love You so deeply in this Mass, You who are so worthy of my love.

God Calls Us to Love

John 13:34

I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have loved you.

Matthew 7:7

Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

Messenger: Dear Jesus, I stand at the door of Your Heart and knock to come in. I want entry - to be lost totally and entirely in Thee. I want to be sheltered inside of Your Heart and wrapped deeply in Your infinite love.

Jesus: I call you, child, to love. Love is rooted in Me. I gave My all for love of you. I held nothing back. Love gives freely for the good of the other. Love exists to draw the other closer to God. If your relationship with your brother in anyway separates you from God, it is not love.

Love is not haughty, love does not demand its own way, love exists to lead the other to closer union with Me. I loved you to My death. I gave to you My all! I ask you to give your all for your beloved brothers. In loving them, you are loving Me. I live in your brothers. How can you love Me who you do not see, if you do not love your brother who you see.

I am the way. I am the truth. I am the life. I give that you will know Me and know how to love one another. Love your brothers as I have loved you. When they persecute you and holler every evil word against you, love them. This is My way - to lay down My life for My friends.

John 13:34

I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have loved you.

Messenger: And to those who heeded His words, their lives were lived in peace and love and they experienced joy in their hearts, for true love brings peace and true love gives joy to the heart of the beholder. It is in loving that you receive, it is in giving that you are rendered to and it is in following the way of Christ that we are led into a life of everlasting happiness.

Jesus: I have not gone. I live with you this day. I am in your brothers. Love them as I have loved you.

Messenger: And He sent them such blessings in such abundance and  they knew a little of His unending mercy and love.

I Feed the Hungry Soul

Jesus: Another person cannot feed your hungry soul. You search, you seek. Your starved soul craves only that which I can give. When your heart is searching for love, come, My sweet dear child, into My Heart. My Mother will take you to the deepest recesses of My Heart. There you will know such comfort - in My Heart on fire for love of you this day.

You are a child of dignity. You are precious to Me. You are the creation of the Father. I gave the last drop of My blood for you. This is love - you need grace to realize the immenseness of God's love. You are so special to God, all three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Mary loves you so much.

You can never be satisfied on this earth. If you find the dearest mother, father, lover, friend, they will not fill you with the love your soul craves. To find Me is to seek Me. You will not be satisfied on this earth.

You, My child, experience longing for My intense love. I love you to want Me. This is how I long for love of each precious soul. I long for them with the most tender Heart, beating and breathing with fire. I never falter. I never grow dim. I am the same, with the same burning love. Come to Me and jump into My precious Heart. I love you so much.

You Are the Father’s Creation

Jesus: I come to you in one another. Let not your hearts be hard, let your hearts be as little children, tender and pure. They do not hold grudges, they love each other, they love themselves.

You are the creation of My beloved Father. You were created with such dignity and love. I died for you. I gave My life that you would share My life. Oh, My child, pray to the Holy Spirit to open your eyes, to let you see where you are blind, to open your hearts to the ways of God. Pray to Him to sanctify you.

You are called to be Christ to one another. Your hearts have turned hard. Your ways are not My ways. My way is always to love. My ways are to give. My ways are to see in your brother the creation of the Father, so beautiful, so uniquely created.

Each child is a gift from God to this world. Each child is a gift of unique love, given by the Father. You were uniquely created. You are so loved. Pray to know your specialness to God. It is in realizing His love for you that you will love your brothers.

Messenger: We are all brothers in Christ. God is our Father. We are all one.

Jesus: Join, My little ones, in such love. It is in loving that you will be at peace. Love of each other creates joy in your hearts. Pray for the grace to know and love God more. It is in this knowledge and God's love that you will be My light that shines in the darkest night.

I am the Way, I am the Truth. I am the Life! To live in Me you must come to know and love Me. Follow My ways. My ways are the ways of truth. My ways are not always the easy way, they are the ways of love.

If you are to be joined in your hearts, you must love every man. Every man is your brother. You must put on Christ in all your ways. Would Christ act as you are acting?

I love you so much. It is in meditating on My love for you that you will love your brothers.

I put you on this earth to love one another. Pray to the Spirit to know My ways. I am Jesus, Son of the Living God. I truly come to bring you new life. It is in Me you will have the light of life. I love you so, the Father loves you so, the Spirit wants to live in your hearts and make you alive with the love of God. Pray to Mary to lead you through her loving heart into such love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

My child, come to My ever burning Heart. I do not love you one moment and forget you the next. I am forever burning brightly for you. I never falter. I am forever on fire for love of you. If you forget Me, I never ever forget you, I love you so much.

These Messages Need to Circulate

Jesus: My dear children, I tell you to listen to Me here. I am delivering messages for all to be read and distributed. Souls need to read these messages. Your Center will grow in love of Me when you circulate these messages. I ask. You have a free will. These are My letters of love to all. They are not being read. I deliver these messages to you to deliver to My faithful ones. Please, I beg you to circulate My messages. What more do I say to you!

This world is moving further and further from Me. I control your every breath. Do you think you are independent of He Who keeps you alive, second by second?

You do not know how truly frail you are? You do not control the air, the water, the sun, your food. You are dependent on Me for your existence, second by second.

I am your Most loving Savior. I speak to you here. Please listen to Me. This is an urgent request. I love you so and love each hurting soul. All the Blue Books have different messages. They speak to all of you. They need to be published. I will provide the funds to see to this. Your delays are stopping the progress of so many returning to My most intimate love. I beg you, please answer My plea.

Rosary of August 27, 1996

Jesus: Put aside all of the differences that you feel in your heart toward any person. I am Jesus. I am calling you to come to Me with a pure heart. You must let go of any distractions in your heart at this moment. I am filling you with My love. Satan aims to stop the rosary and these messages. He will talk in your heads and distract you. You must focus on your love for Me, for I long to hear the words from your lips, "Jesus, I love You." I love for you to come and to tell Me, "O, how I love You, Jesus. How I love You." Pray for the grace that you will love Me more. I am waiting for you to tell Me of your fervent love. I love you. I love you so much. I am calling out to you. Will you fill My Heart with love? Come to Me and tell Me how you love Me.

R. This is a rosary of love. It is a time that we tell Jesus and Mary how much we love Them and how grateful we are for all the gifts They have given to us. Let us put aside all of the differences in our heart and ask Jesus to fill our hearts with love, that we may march into this world as His mighty soldiers of love, spreading the fire of this love across the earth, watching the darkness turn into light. As night follows day and day follows night, the dark night that is filling this earth will be turned into the light of day as hearts are filled with His love.

Jesus: I am calling you, My beloved ones, My apostles of love, to go across this earth and to carry this light to the world. As you dwell in Our Hearts, you will radiate this light and many will know My love through you. I love you. I want you to love Me with all your heart.

The Resurrection

1. R. Do we see the withered body of Jesus on the cross, the death of the Almighty God? And Jesus is locked in the tomb for three days. We have been called on a great mission. We have been tried and tested and we have suffered, but Jesus tells us that in the death, there is the resurrection. In the darkest tunnel, there is the brightest light. We must stay focused on Him, for He will not leave us. He is guarding our every breath and our every heartbeat. There are many tunnels of darkness that we have traveled on our journey to spread His love to this world, but through all of these tunnels, there was the light at the end of the tunnel. We see Jesus, His withered body as He hung on the cross, and we see His glorified body as He came from the tomb. The wounds in His hands and His feet bloodied on the cross. The wounds in His hands, in His feet, in His side, glorified wounds as He rose from the dead. This is how our life is, a constant death and resurrection. We struggle, but at the end of the tunnel, He gives to us a deeper sharing in His life. I love You, Jesus. We thank You for the struggle, for it was after the struggle that You gave to us the great gifts of more abundant life, that You revealed to us teachings about Yourself. We love You. We love You. We love You. Glorified Christ, we see You adorned in white and glistening, and we know that if we stay fixed in You that we too will share more abundantly in Your life.

2. R. See Mary as she cries outside of the tomb of her Son, and think of the joy in the heart of Mary when she sees Him after the Resurrection. O heart of Mary that suffered so many sorrows and so many joys, take us into your heart that we may share more in the love of Jesus as you loved Him.

3. Jesus: I impart to you great graces in this rosary that you will come to My Heart, that you will know My love. You must open your heart and let Me fill your heart with My love. Do not focus on any of the distractions that satan has created in your mind, for I am with you in a special way, and I will touch your heart if you put aside those distractions and focus on My love. I am the Almighty God, all powerful, and I am guarding you, My beloved apostles. Each one of you have been called here. This is an important mission for the renewal of the Church and the world. You do not comprehend the immensity of this mission. I beg you at this moment to come to My Heart and let Me bathe you in My love. I love you. I love you. I love you. This is a special night for our love affair, My dear ones. You will remember this night and how I touched your heart in a special way. I am Jesus, the Savior of the world. I love you, My special, chosen ones.

4. R. How are you in this world today? Are you carrying out the messages of Christ's love?

5. R. I look at myself, and I see myself, so many times, so anxious and worried. I want, My beloved Jesus, to be as You want me to be, but I am realizing more and more that this depends on the grace that You give to me and if I cooperate with Your grace. Give me this grace. Dear Holy Spirit, work within the heart of my Mother to mold me more and more into the image and likeness of Jesus, for I know that I am totally dependent on You. Of myself, I fall and I am wretched. I love You, my beloved God. I want to have a soul that is glistening and white and pure, but it is only through Your grace that I will be this way. I give myself to You. I give myself to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and I ask the Holy Spirit to work within her heart to sanctify me.

6. Jesus: You will be made holy as you surrender, as you give yourselves to Our Hearts. It is in dwelling in Our Hearts that you are sanctified, that you will be the soldiers of love marching on this cold earth. Many hearts in the world today have turned cold. You will march across this earth, and they will be lighted by the fire of My love.

7. R. There will be the reign of the Sacred Heart and the triumph of her Immaculate Heart. How will this be? Will it come in peace, or will it come with much suffering? As the Shepherds of Christ Movement spreads across this earth, as hearts are consecrated to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the fire of His love will spread across this earth, and Mary promised at Fatima that if hearts are consecrated to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, if there are a sufficient number of hearts consecrated to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, we will have peace.

8. R. Jesus has risen. He is victorious. This is the good news. The good news is that we have been called here as His apostles, His shepherds in the Shepherds of Christ Movement to carry His messages of love to the world. As hearts are consecrated to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, we will proceed in peace.

9. R. O Heart of Jesus, I give You myself.

10. R. The victory has been won. Let us give our hearts to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. It is in giving ourselves in love to Jesus and to Mary that we will unite with the Almighty God in such great love.

Song: Come Holy Spirit . . .

Jesus: I am alive. I am alive. I am alive, and I live in your heart. Put aside all of the differences in your heart, and let Me live in this world in you.

The Ascension

1. R. These are the Glorious Mysteries. The victory has been won. The Almighty God died on a cross, but He rose on the third day.

2. Hail Mary

3. R. Jesus raised His arms and He ascended into heaven, and a cloud took Him from their sight.

4. Jesus: I no longer walk this earth, My beloved ones. I live in your heart. You must open your heart at this moment and let Me fill you with My love. So as you are in your hearts, you will be in this world. I am alive. I am alive. I am alive, and I live in you. Who are you that the Almighty God lives in you?

5. Jesus: Do you come to Me and unite in the Eucharist? Do you come to Me in prayer and unite in your heart? And then you go to the world, My beloved ones, and you forget about Me. You are to carry My light into the darkness. As you operate in this world today, I want to live in you. You must carry My light into the darkness. Do not be afraid to go into the darkness, but My life must be alive in your hearts. Come to Me and I will fill you with My life. When you talk to your friends, you must be rooted in Me. So many of you forget about Me when you leave the church. I am in your heart at this moment. I am in your heart when  you talk to others. I live in you, and My life flows through you. I want to live in this world. You must dwell in My Heart at every moment. The more you come to Me, the more you pray that you will dwell in My Heart, the more I will give you this grace to constantly dwell in My Heart in all of your activities. I live in this world in you. You must talk to Me all through the day, and tell Me how you love Me. Tell Me of your problems. Tell Me of your thoughts. Your thoughts become one with Me. I live in you. I will light the darkness through you.

6. Jesus: Do you fall? Are you disappointed, My dear ones, when you fail? You must realize that you are imperfect. You must come to the heart of My Mother. Her heart is pure. She will place you in the deepest chamber of My Heart. Tell Me when you have sinned. Tell Me you are sorry. The devil continues to tempt you to feel down-hearted. You must admit your error, and come to the heart of My Mother. It is in admitting your error and coming to her heart, that you will constantly dwell in My Heart. For the devil tells you once you have fallen that you should be down-hearted. Say you are sorry and come to the heart of My Mother. She will take you to My Heart, and you will dwell in her pure heart. There is not a reason why you should stay away from My Heart. If you have sinned, if you have fallen, you must say you are sorry and go to the heart of My Mother.

7. Jesus: I am alive. I am alive. I am alive. I no longer walk this earth; I live in you, and you act as a channel of this life to this world that is hurting and in pain. Come and dwell in My Heart.

8. R. Jesus ascended into heaven, and He left behind the apostles to carry out His work. This day, we are truly called His apostles, His apostles to go into the new era for the renewal of the Church and the world. This is a most important mission that He has called us to. You have been called, and you have been chosen by the Almighty God.

9. R. We see the plan of the Father unfold in the life of Mary. We see the angel appear to Mary, and we see Mary crowned "Queen of Heaven and Earth". This is the same plan. We are the apostles of this era. We have been chosen, and He is calling us to follow Him.

10. Song: I come to you with greatest love. I am your loving Savior. I am your God. I died for you. I come to you this day.

Song: Come Holy Ghost

The Descent of the Holy Spirit

1. R. And they were gathered in the upper room, and there was like a gigantic wind and there appeared over their heads parted tongues of fire. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in foreign tongues as the Holy Spirit prompted them to speak.

2. R. These were the Apostles that were filled with fear, that locked themselves in the room, Peter, head of the Church, that denied our Lord. These were the Apostles. Jesus shows us how they were and how they fell and how they were weak, but when the Holy Spirit descended upon them, they were filled with the fire of God's love. They were not afraid. They were fearless, and they went forth into the world to preach the Gospel message with fire.

3. Jesus: My love is fire, My beloved ones. My Heart is on-fire for the love of you. Will you open your heart and let Me fill you with this fire. It is a burning fire. It is the biggest fire. No one can put out the fire in the Heart of Jesus. My Heart will forever burn with this fire. What have you to fear when I am the Almighty God, and I give to you My heart filled with this fire that will never end. Will the souls of this earth be comforted by this fire, the fire that you will spread across the earth, or will you see the souls of your brother march into the fires of hell? I am Jesus. I am calling you. I am begging you to answer this call, for every moment in your life is so important, for souls are at stake. This is a most important mission, for you are My modern day apostles that will carry the message of My love into this world. And the Sacred heart of Jesus will reign and the Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph when hearts are on-fire for the love of God. I love you. I love you. I love you. I am alive, and I live this day.

4. Jesus: Do not be afraid, My beloved apostles, for I am counting on you. I have called you here for I knew you would answer this call. I am giving to you a special grace at this moment. Open your heart and let Me fill you with fire. I want to be one in you, to live in you, to love you. I want you to feel My presence within your heart, the presence of the Almighty God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that your heart is on-fire for the love of God. It is presence, My beloved ones. You must come to Me. You must sit after Communion and in front of the tabernacle, and I will give you My love. I am Jesus. I am mighty. I am God.

5. Jesus: Why are you afraid? Why are you afraid; I have all the power, My dear ones? I will let you crawl on your stomach to Me, for you will know that you are dependent on Me. It is in this dependency that you will carry this love to the world, for it takes My might working within you. But I have allowed you to suffer to see that you are dependent on Me. I am God. You are My beloved one. I give you all that you need. You must surrender and give yourself to Me.

6. Jesus: It is in your surrender that I unite to you with such love. I give Myself to you. To have this union with Me, you must give yourself to Me. You hold back, My dear one. I love you so. When you are taunted by Satan, do not give into the tauntings in your mind to divide you. This is to stop you in your work. Each day lost, many souls will be lost because of the importance of this mission. I am giving to you abundant graces that you will join in My Heart. In all of your prayers united to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, you will help save the souls of many. You must, when you are taunted by satan, not give into these tauntings. You must focus on My love, and tell Me how you love Me. Satan will work on you. He will work on you and work on you because so many souls will be saved through your efforts. You are helping in the redemption of many souls. Each day is a large amount of time, and satan knows this. Do not give in to his tauntings to divide you and to get you bowed down. I am with you. I am so close to you. Do you feel My presence? Do you know I am watching and guarding you? You must come to My Heart. You stand on the outside, and you look up at Me. And satan is attempting to stop you.

7. Song: Fill our hearts with Your fire. Fill our hearts with Your fire.

8. R. I had a vision of the biggest fire against the blackest night, and there was a little fireman in front with a little hose, and he could not extinguish the fire in any way. This was the fire of the Heart of Jesus. It is a mighty force, so powerful that it cannot be extinguished by anything that any man can do. He is uniting us to this fire. Why do we fear when we are united in such oneness to the Heart of Jesus?

9. Song: Give me Your Heart, O Jesus, give me a heart like yours. Teach me to love You with this new heart. O, I know little of how to love You. Create in me, O precious Savior, this special heart.

10. R. And the apostles were filled with the fire of God's love. They were not afraid. They were locked in prison, and they proceeded steadfastly ahead. They got out of prison singing. Fill our hearts, O Holy Spirit, with the fire of God's love, that we will not give in to the tauntings of satan, that when we are pressed on that we will know the fire of God's love and proceed steadfastly ahead, for many, many souls are at stake, and You have given to us a great mission.

Jesus: My dear, dear, beloved ones, I have called each one of you in this room. Do not underestimate what you will do when you dwell in My Heart, for I magnify all of your efforts, and the fire of My love will spread across the earth. The Sacred Heart of Jesus will reign and the Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph. You must come to My Heart, and you will be lead.

The Assumption

1. Jesus: I love you. I love you. I love you, and I give to you, My sweet ones, My Mother.

2. R. We look up at Mary, and we say, "Mary, help us. Mary, we beg you to help us. Mary, it is so hard. We want to do the work of Jesus, and it is so hard." And Mary looked down at me, when she appeared to me in the Sorrowful Mother statue, and she said, "My dear child, come to my heart. You stand outside and you plead and you beg, and the devil is there to attack you. When you come to my heart, to my spiritual womb, I crush the devil with my heel. You must come and dwell in my heart. Come to my womb as an embryo in the womb of their mother, for they are not afraid. They are secure. I am Mary, your Mother, and I am waiting for you to come, for I will protect you against the terrors of the night."

3. R. I go to the heart of Mary as a little baby within the womb of their mother, and I know that I am not afraid of anything, for there is no fear. That is how it is in heaven; there is no fear. There is perfect peace. We are free from all anxieties. As the hot air balloon ascends into the heavens, we are free from all those things on the earth below. This is how it is in the womb of our Mother. She truly protects us. It is a matter of letting go. Will we focus on these things that are holding us bound, or will we realize that the Almighty God is really there in our every breath and heartbeat and trust Him. Even though we do not understand and we want to worry, will we let go and let God do it?

4. Jesus: You must surrender, My beloved ones. You must go to the heart of My Mother, for you will be taunted by the evil one. You will be taunted continuously because of the mission that you have been called to. It is only in her heart that you will be protected from the evil one, for her heel will crush his head.

5. R. There appeared in the sky a woman clothed in the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and there were twelve stars about her head. We are the children of light that dwell within the heart of our Mother. It is in her heart, Mary the Mediatrix of all grace, that we are formed into these children of light, for she is clothed with the sun, and the moon is under her feet. The darkness is beneath her as she crushes the evil one with her heel. And surrounding her head are twelve stars.

Jesus: You are My stars. You are My apostles, My apostles that will light the darkness. As stars, you will shine in the darkest night, for you are the children of light. Come to the womb of My Mother and be filled with her light. She is the Lady of Light. You are the children of light. You will march across this earth as a little army spreading the light of the Almighty God, the fire of My love across the earth. And the Sacred Heart of Jesus will reign and the Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph as you carry out the messages of My love to this world.

6. R. The Sacred Heart of Jesus will reign when hearts fervently love Jesus.

7. R. The Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph when we give our hearts to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and fervently love these Hearts. It is in the Shepherds of Christ Movement, when people consecrate their hearts to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, that we will have peace and love on the earth. We have been called to a great mission. It is most important that we see that what we do will help save many souls.

8. Mary:  I stood beneath the cross of my Son, and my Heart was in such pain for I saw Him before my eyes. I saw Him covered with blood. I saw Him die. My Heart, my children, my Heart to watch my Son, but my Heart, my Heart, how I suffered for my little children of the world that give in to this world and give up the love of my Son. O my little children of light, I give you this message. Carry this light into the darkness for your Mother Mary, for I stood beneath the cross and I cried. I cried for the little ones. I cried for the young ones, the ones that do not care and will lose their souls. How do I make you see for you will not listen to me? What can I do? I come. I appear. I beg. I plead. I give you these gifts from my Son, and you reject me. I do not deliver messages very often anymore for I have been ignored. The message is the same. You do not read the messages I have given to you. Please help me. Help the little children. I appear. I appear. I appear, and I am ignored. I stood beneath the cross, and I cried. I cried, and my Heart was in such anguish for my little children, for I am searching for them this day as I searched for the Child Jesus. Please, please help me. I cannot hold back the hand of my Son any longer. I am Mary, your Mother. I ask you to help my children. You are my children of light.

9. Song: O Lady of Light, shining so bright, be with us this day, guiding our way, O Lady, O Lady of Light.

Mary: I appear to you as Our Mother of Sorrows.

10. Hail Mary

The Coronation

1. R. We see the angel appear to Mary, and we see the plan of the Father unfold in her life as she complied always to the will of the Father. And we see her taken into heaven and crowned "Queen of Heaven and Earth", but do we see the plan as it unfolds in our own life, from the day we were born how we have been guarded and watched, how He has led us to this point, how He has taught us and given us everything that we need to be able to carry out this mission, for many souls are at stake.

2. R. Do you see how you all fit as pieces into the puzzle, how you have been given the talents from the Almighty God to carry out this plan? Each one of you, uniquely special, you will help in the salvation of many souls.

3. Song: From the day you were born

4. R. And the angel appeared to Mary and she was afraid, but he told her, "Do not be afraid, Mary." And he asked her to be the Mother of God, and we see Mary how her heart was pierced with a sword and how she struggled, but we see how she was taken into heaven and crowned "Queen of Heaven and Earth". Look at our life. We see ourselves as little babies coming into this world. We see all the things that we learned and all that we have been taught, but did we see the hand of God throughout our whole life forming us so that we would be able to carry out this great mission that He has called us to today?

Jesus: You are each little pieces to the puzzle, so important and so precious to Me. Together you make up the whole picture. You must surrender. You will not bump heads, My beloved ones. You must do the will of the Father.

5. Hail Mary

6. Hail Mary

7. Revelation 12: 1  Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, robed with the sun, standing on the moon, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

R. We are the stars that will shine in the dark night with the fire of His love. We are the children of light. Mary is bringing us forth in her womb. We are saturated with His life and with His light as we dwell in her womb and sanctified through the Holy Spirit with the fire of God's love. We are children of light for we are saturated with the fire of His love. It is the brightest light. It is a fire that will not be extinguished. It is a fire that will spread across the earth, we are His instruments to do His work, as He operates through us, as we become one in Him.

8. R. And there will be that day when we are united in such union with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that we know the Almighty God. There will be no wanting. There will be no fear and no anxiety. We will be consumed by the love of God. We will be satisfied and full in heaven.

9. Song: May the angels lead you into paradise

Jesus: Know My presence, My dear ones. Sit with Me and focus on this presence, for I am alive, and I am with you. As you feel united with the person next to you; focus on the presence of the Almighty God within your heart. Focus on My presence as you sit in front of the tabernacle. Focus on God, truly present with you in the Holy Eucharist in communion.

10. Jesus: I am a Person. I am alive, and I love you.

                I give you My beauty,

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:

"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.

"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.

"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."

- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,

From the Cycle B Homily Book

Building the Kingdom of Truth

The Eucharist and the Word is the Bread of Life – In this world with distorted vision – we spread this book to you – Focusing on the Word – The Word alive in our Hearts – Reflecting on the Word – THIS IS TRUTH

The more we live the Word in our lives, the more we live Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection in our lives – the more we know the truth and see more clearly the vision of our heavenly Father –

We have been given the Catholic Church – Pillar of truth – We have been given the Word – We have been given the Commandments –

Because of original sin we have distorted vision – Living in the Word . . obeying the Commandments – Living according to the Church’s teachings helps us to live in the truth – to see more the vision of the Father – We know in this distorted world – THE TRUTH! !

We pray the Our Father at Mass – We focus on our Heavenly Father and His Plan for us – We want unity as children of God

In spreading these homilies and our writings on the Eucharist – we want men to be fed more and more with the Bread of Life – We want to live in the truth – We want to live in greater faith, hope and love – To live in unity –

To date – 17 years – we have circulated 15,000,000 Priestly Newsletters loose and in books from Fr. Carter and other priests.

We have begun prayer chapters in 8 languages with the Church's Imprimatur, around the world, so there is a network of prayer out there praying for our priests, the Church and the world –

If we have this devotion to the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart, we are helping ourselves to be more united in the pure and holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary as Mary asked for at Fatima –

When we die there will be a network of prayer around the world praying for our beloved priests and the Church –

This to me is the greatest gift I can give to my children and grandchildren in helping more and more our holy priests – We hope people love God and others as they dwell in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

We pray people love the Church more and more and thank God for this precious gift of the Church and the priest and the Word – We pray people live as strong members of the mystical body of Christ –

The world is in so much need of prayer and that deep relationship with Mary, Mother of the Church – The Holy Spirit works in that Spousal union with Mary helping us to do God's will –

Thank you for your willingness to answer God’s call in focusing on the Word and praying for the priests, the Church and the world with us –

May God bless you in your mission of loving and serving God and helping to build the Kingdom of God.

May the Light of Christ shine on the earth as we live more holy lives in Him and in His Word –

We should respond enthusiastically to Christ’s call to help build up the Kingdom of truth and love, of justice and that the peace of Christ is spread on this earth.

John 15: 5-6

I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a branch –and withers; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire and are burnt.

We get our life from Jesus – He is the vine – we are the branches – A branch cannot bear grapes if it is disconnected from the vine – We cannot do anything without Him

I frequently make use of them when preparing my own Sunday homilies, because they are theologically solid but also very down-to-earth. Incidentally, I recently visited St. Gertrude's Priory (Dominican) in Cincinnati and during the Prayer of the Faithful, one of the friars prayed for Fr. Joe by name. After Vespers I asked why, and was told Fr. Joe was to have surgery the next day. I hope and pray he is well and will be blessed with many more years of happy priestly ministry. I enjoy Fr. Joe's homilies and I am still waiting for him to publish funeral homilies. God bless you in your work.

Guiding Light - Reflect on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light homily series - Reflect on the Word - Cycle B     The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand. $15

Guiding Light - Steadfast to the Son
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle A of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light homily series - Steadfast to the Son - Cycle A    The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul - Cycle C    In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15

Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word - Cycle B    At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15

Priestly Newsletter 2000 Issue 1
Audio CD - Read by Father Edward J. Carter
$ 10.00  plus postage

Priestly Newsletter - 2000 #1 - CD. - Christ is Our Strength - Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. It is so beautiful. "This brief passage contains one of the greatest lessons of the spiritual life. As we progress along our spiritual journey, we become increasingly aware of how weak we are in our-selves, but how strong we are in Christ. To experience our weakness involves suffering. The degree and kind of suffering can vary. The suffering can include the experience of the classical dark night of the spirit as described by St. John of the Cross. One of the main purposes of the dark night is to make a person keenly aware of his or her helplessness without God." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10

Priestly Newsletter - 2000 #2 - CD. - Suffering: A Source of Life - Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. Fr. Carter knew suffering that year. His voice is so powerful as he read each Newsletter from his heart and soul. "Every man has his own share in the redemption. Each one is also called to share in that suffering through which the redemption was accomplished. He is called to share in that suffering through which all human suffering has also been redeemed. In bringing about the redemption through suffering, Christ has also raised human suffering to the level of the redemption. Thus each man in his suffering can also become a sharer in the redemptive suffering of Christ..." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10
