John 18:  35-38

Pilate answered, ‘Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?’ Jesus replied, ‘Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.’ Pilate said, ‘So, then you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘It is you who say that I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.’ ‘Truth?’ said Pilate. ‘What is that?’ And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, ‘I find no case against him.

John 19: 10-11

Pilate then said to him, ‘Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?’ Jesus replied, ‘You would have no power over me at all if it had not been given you from above; that is why the man who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.’

John 19: 14-16

It was the Day of Preparation, about the sixth hour. ‘Here is your king,’ said Pilate to the Jews. But they shouted, ‘Away with him, away with him, crucify him.’ Pilate said, ‘Shall I crucify your king?’ The chief priests answered, ‘We have no king except Caesar.’ So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

                    Note John 19 ends

John 19: 41-42

At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been buried. Since it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Messenger:        The Holy Land is an important place

Acts 5: 29-32

In reply Peter and the apostles said, ‘Obedience to God comes before obedience to men; it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, whom you executed by hanging on a tree. By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and Saviour, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins through him to Israel. We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.’

Romans 4: 1-6

Then what do we say about Abraham, the ancestor from whom we are descended physically? If Abraham had been justified because of what he had done, then he would have had something to boast about. But not before God: does not scripture say: Abraham put his faith in God and this was reckoned to him as uprightness?  Now, when someone works, the wages for this are not considered as a favour but as due; however, when someone, without working, puts faith in the one who justifies the godless, it is this faith that is reckoned as uprightness. David, too, says the same: he calls someone blessed if God attributes uprightness to that person, apart from any action undertaken:

Romans 6: 4-5, 9

So by our baptism into his death we were buried with him, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glorious power, we too should begin living a new life. If we have been joined to him by dying a death like his, so we shall be by a resurrection like his;

We know that Christ has been raised from the dead and will never die again. Death has no power over him any more.

Romans 8: 14-17

All who are guided by the Spirit of God are sons of God; for what you received was not the spirit of slavery to bring you back into fear; you received the Spirit of adoption, enabling us to cry out, ‘Abba, Father!’ The Spirit himself joins with our spirit to bear witness that we are children of God. And if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and joint–heirs with Christ, provided that we share his suffering, so as to share his glory.

1 Corinthians 2: 7

It is of the mysterious wisdom of God that we talk, the wisdom that was hidden, which God predestined to be for our glory before the ages began.

1 Corinthians 4: 7-8

Who made you so important? What have you got that was not given to you? And if it was given to you, why are you boasting as though it were your own? You already have everything—you are rich already—you have come into your kingdom, without any help from us! Well, I wish you were kings and we could be kings with you!

1 Corinthians 15: 44

what is sown is a natural body, and what is raised is a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is a spiritual body too.

1 Corinthians 15:  47

The first man, being made of earth, is earthly by nature; the second man is from heaven.

1 Corinthians 15:  51-52

Now I am going to tell you a mystery: we are not all going to fall asleep, but we are all going to be changed, instantly, in the twinkling of an eye, when the last trumpet sounds. The trumpet is going to sound, and then the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed,

1 Corinthians 15:  55-56

Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin comes from the Law.

2 Corinthians 6:  14 - 18

Do not harness yourselves in an uneven team with unbelievers; how can uprightness and law–breaking be partners, or what can light and darkness have in common? How can Christ come to an agreement with Beliar and what sharing can there be between a believer and an unbeliever? The temple of God cannot compromise with false gods, and that is what we are—the temple of the living God. We have God’s word for it: I shall fix my home among them and live among them; I will be their God and they will be my people. Get away from them, purify yourselves, says the Lord. Do not touch anything unclean, and then I shall welcome you. I shall be father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to me, says the almighty Lord.

2 Corinthians 13:  5-7

Put yourselves to the test to make sure you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Do you not recognise yourselves as people in whom Jesus Christ is present?—unless, that is, you fail the test. But we, as I hope you will come to recognise, do not fail the test. It is our prayer to God that you may do nothing wrong—not so that we have the credit of passing a test, but because you will be doing what is right, even if we do not pass the test.

Ephesians 1: 21-23

far above every principality, ruling force, power or sovereignty,  or any other name that can be named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. He has put all things under his feet,  and made him, as he is above all things, the head of the Church; which is his Body, the fullness of him who is filled, all in all.

Ephesians 3: 19-23

so that, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond knowledge, you may be filled with the utter fullness of God.

Glory be to him whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine; glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

Ephesians 4: 11-26

And to some, his ‘gift’ was that they should be apostles; to some prophets; to some, evangelists; to some, pastors and teachers; to knit God’s holy people together for the work of service to build up the Body of Christ, until we all reach unity in faith and knowledge of the Son of God and form the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself.

Then we shall no longer be children, or tossed one way and another, and carried hither and thither by every new gust of teaching, at the mercy of all the tricks people play and their unscrupulousness in deliberate deception. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall grow completely into Christ, who is the head by whom the whole Body is fitted and joined together, every joint adding its own strength, for each individual part to work according to its function. So the body grows until it has built itself up in love.

So this I say to you and attest to you in the Lord, do not go on living the empty–headed life that the gentiles live. Intellectually they are in the dark, and they are estranged from the life of God, because of the ignorance which is the consequence of closed minds. Their sense of right and wrong once dulled, they have abandoned all self–control and pursue to excess every kind of uncleanness. Now that is hardly the way you have learnt Christ, unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus. You were to put aside your old self, which belongs to your old way of life and is corrupted by following illusory desires. Your mind was to be renewed in spirit so that you could put on the New Man that has been created on God’s principles, in the uprightness and holiness of the truth.

So from now on, there must be no more lies. Speak the truth to one another, since we are all parts of one another. Even if you are angry, do not sin: never let the sun set on your anger

Ephesians 5: 23

since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;

Ephesians 5: 25-26

Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,

Ephesians 6: 5-8

Slaves, be obedient to those who are, according to human reckoning, your masters, with deep respect and sincere loyalty, as you are obedient to Christ: not only when you are under their eye, as if you had only to please human beings, but as slaves of Christ who wholeheartedly do the will of God. Work willingly for the sake of the Lord and not for the sake of human beings. Never forget that everyone, whether a slave or a free man, will be rewarded by the Lord for whatever work he has done well.

Philippians 4: 4-7

Always be joyful, then, in the Lord; I repeat, be joyful. Let your good sense be obvious to everybody. The Lord is near. Never worry about anything; but tell God all your desires of every kind in prayer and petition shot through with gratitude, and the peace of God which is beyond our understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 1: 28

this is the Christ we are proclaiming, admonishing and instructing everyone in all wisdom, to make everyone perfect in Christ.

2 Thessalonians 1: 6-10

For God’s justice will surely mean hardship being inflicted on those who are now inflicting hardship on you, and for you who are now suffering hardship, relief with us, when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven with the angels of his power. He will come amid flaming fire; he will impose a penalty on those who do not acknowledge God and refuse to accept the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Their punishment is to be lost eternally, excluded from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength on that day when he comes to be glorified among his holy ones and marvelled at by all who believe in him; and you are among those who believed our witness.

Hebrews 10: 19-39

We have then, brothers, complete confidence through the blood of Jesus in entering the sanctuary, by a new way which he has opened for us, a living opening through the curtain, that is to say, his flesh. And we have the high priest over all the sanctuary of God.  So as we go in, let us be sincere in heart and filled with faith, our hearts sprinkled and free from any trace of bad conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us keep firm in the hope we profess, because the one who made the promise is trustworthy. Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works. Do not absent yourself from your own assemblies, as some do, but encourage each other; the more so as you see the Day drawing near.

If, after we have been given knowledge of the truth, we should deliberately commit any sins, then there is no longer any sacrifice for them. There is left only the dreadful prospect of judgement and of the fiery wrath that is to devour your enemies. Anyone who disregards the Law of Moses is ruthlessly put to death on the word of two witnesses or three; and you may be sure that anyone who tramples on the Son of God, and who treats the blood of the covenant which sanctified him as if it were not holy, and who insults the Spirit of grace, will be condemned to a far severer punishment. We are all aware who it was that said: Vengeance is mine; I will pay them back. And again: The Lord will vindicate his people. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Remember the great challenge of the sufferings that you had to meet after you received the light, in earlier days; sometimes by being yourselves publicly exposed to humiliations and violence, and sometimes as associates of others who were treated in the same way. For you not only shared in the sufferings of those who were in prison, but you accepted with joy being stripped of your belongings, knowing that you owned something that was better and lasting. Do not lose your fearlessness now, then, since the reward is so great. You will need perseverance if you are to do God’s will and gain what he has promised.

Only a little while now, a very little while,
for come he certainly will before too long.
My upright person will live through faith
    but if he draws back,
my soul will take no pleasure in him.

We are not the sort of people who draw back, and are lost by it; we are the sort who keep faith until our souls are saved.

Hebrews read chapters 11 and 12

Read all of 1 John

Read all of Revelation

Revelation 19: 11-16

And now I saw heaven open, and a white horse appear; its rider was called Trustworthy and True; in uprightness he judges and makes war. His eyes were flames of fire, and he was crowned with many coronets; the name written on him was known only to himself, his cloak was soaked in blood. He is known by the name, The Word of God. Behind him, dressed in linen of dazzling white, rode the armies of heaven on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword with which to strike the unbelievers; he is the one who will rule them with an iron sceptre, and tread out the wine of Almighty God’s fierce retribution. On his cloak and on his thigh a name was written: King of kings and Lord of lords.

My Kingdom Is At Hand

February 6, 1994 5:00 a.m.

Jesus: This is all fruitless, My children. I am your God. All your endeavors are of no account if they do not have their reference to Me. You can run down many roads at such a fast pace but the only road that counts is the road that leads to My Sacred Heart. You hold on to this and that and tomorrow your life may be snatched from you! If you knew you would die tomorrow, would any of what you hold on to be so important?

Ready your hearts for the kingdom of God. My Kingdom is at hand. You hold useless treasures in your hands while the King of Glory waits. I am King of the Kingdom you seek. I am ardently waiting for you in the tabernacle. My heart is afire, ablaze for love of you. My heart yearns and longs for you as the most ardent lover, yet you, My little ones, do not come. It wounds My aching heart. I want you so much to come and sit with Me. Do you not hear the cry of your lover? Yet you pay no heed to Me and when I give you Myself in Communion you come with a cold heart. Oh, My aching heart, to love so much and be rejected by you!

I am the King of the Kingdom you seek. My Kingdom is not of this world. Where do you go for your wares when I have all you need? Come to Me and receive all you seek. Come to Me and be filled. Come to Me and get everything that is of any account.

I am Jesus. I am the Son of God. I sit and wait and you run down senseless roads! I am on fire with love of you. I wait for you, I long for you, I want you and you say, "No, Lord". Oh, My aching heart, how it hurts for love of you!

Come, My little ones, come and be wrapped in the arms of Him Who loves you ardently. Do not run after your needless tasks. You do not have to do anything in this world but seek My kingdom. This is your focus. This is all that is of any account.

You seek, you search, you wander, you run down roads that lead nowhere at such speeds and your love waits. I know the very workings of your heart. I ponder you and know you far better than yourselves. I loved you to My death and I wait for you with an intense, ardent love. Come and let Me show you real love, My love. It is not fleeting. It does not last a moment. It lasts forever!

Come, come, come to your love. I wait for you. Come and let Me give you all you need. When I am the center of your life, you will have all you need.

I love you. Jesus.

Notes: At 6:30 a.m. I saw a vision of children, two adults by their side, walking together in a group. One adult in front was wearing a scarf on a tweed coat. She had brown hair which was curled. She turned and had her hand on a child. She was leading them. The other adult was in the back. There were about 20 to 25 kids on a street. They all had their coats and they had just turned the corner.

Jesus: Lead the children to the love of Jesus. Lead My priests and sisters to My infinite love. My love is abounding to all. My love is on fire for everyone. On fire! You must tell them. Speak for Me. All must know of this intense love for them. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.

See the children will be led home. Their hearts will know My love. I want you to speak in front of groups about My love.

Would You Give Your Life For Me?

August 24, 1994

Jesus:  One lump on your head: they beat My head, they bruised My body, I was red and bloody, they tore My flesh, they hit Me over and over again and they laughed! They hollered such slanderous things at Me. When they holler at you and persecute you, remember what they did to Me.

Suffer your little crosses, look to Me and what they did. The devil tempts others to speak harshly against you. Many are suffering inside when they persecute you. Pray for them. Anyone who is directing hate at you is allowing Satan to use them. Oh, how they need your prayers! Offer up your trials and sufferings to the Father, along with the Masses being offered at that moment. This is such a pleasing offering to My Father.

Please, child, stay so focused on Me and My ways. One bump to the head and look how you worry for yourself. Oh, sweet one, you do not know the blows they gave to My head. Without any warning, I was smacked, hit and pierced with sharp instruments. They hit My head with big clubs and laughed.

My child, for you I suffered! For you, I loved unto My very death! Would you give your life for Me? I love you this much. Your acts of love this day comforted Me during My passion. I love you so very much. I wait to share your love with you this very day. I wait and love you so much.

Come to Me, My dear and tender heart. I am your beloved Jesus. My Mother is forever with you, with such love.  Focus on this love in the cold world and pray, pray, pray.

Offer up your life for those in darkness. Your every action is a prayer if you are doing the Father's will. I love you so much, My precious dear one. I am the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on fire for love of you!

From November 22, 2003

Messenger:            Tomorrow is the Feast of Christ the King.

November 22, 2003 message continues

Messenger:             Even the small child wants their way.

A small child can cry and say, "I want,

                    I want, I want."

A child knows what they want and they

must be taught they can't have everything

                    they want.

When children grow up many times they

say "I had to do this all my life and you aren't

going to tell me what to do."

With an attitude in later life, " I am not going

to have anybody telling me what to do," how can

there be harmony with that person in anything they

                    do.

Jesus speaks:          Why do you give me one thing when I ask for

something else? Many times the attitude that blocks

work being done is the position of the person

"I am not going to have anyone telling me what

to do." It is like acting like an old mule, stubborn,

worn out and willful. With some it is so automatic

                    they act contrary —

they never learned to give and take normally, they

do what is the "opposite" of what is required, what

is paramount to them is "never being told what

                    to do"

They say or rationalize "I do not want anyone

telling me how or what is done, I am now an adult and

being an adult means I am out for #one."

What is the measuring stick is not whether

you are in control, but what is God's will.

Some people to control others do not look at their

own behavior of others, unjustly judging them, looking

to religion to justify their own ironic behavior.

I tell you to remove the big block of wood in your

own eye, before you look for the splinter in your

                    brother's eye.

What is the condition of the heart? How

do you speak to one another?

A  young man pointed his finger at a little

tired old lady for wasting time when he himself

caused so much upsetment he wasted weeks of

                    hard work.

If the tables were turned the finger would

have been pointed at him for wasting weeks of

work and the little old lady was just tired

                    and quit early.

Control is an important thing when one

is in charge of a family, but control that

chokes a child or hurts the progress of

spiritual growth and living according to God's

                    will is "selfish-control."

A man called wolf and he called it every

day, he abused his friends, he didn't do his

daily duties, caring for his children and obeying

the commandments himself. He had lots

of time on his hands and he did perverted

things. He would hurt others intentionally and

expect them to come running to him and

help him. His mind became so twisted in his

thinking he no longer looked at any of his

actions at all, he did horrendous deeds to

others and then came and cried he wanted

help and expected others to come running

after him and love him. When a man continually

calls wolf, others will not come when he needs them

                    when the wolf has come.

I give you this commandment to love God

with all your heart and all your soul and

love your neighbor as yourself. People who have

been abused and hurt themselves can become

                    abusers treating others dishonorably and

                    violating their boundaries.

Why do you not see the block of wood in

your own eye before you try to remove

                    the splinter in your brothers.

And so sin entered the world.

The evil serpent, the devil, tempted Eve

                        and she sinned.

Adam, too, ate of the apple.

I give you a free will.

See the little child, kick and scream, being

held in the parents arms crying, I want...,

                        I want... — screaming —

And even if a child grows up, sometimes the battle

is so much more difficult in the teenage

years, for the child may just do what they

want and lie to the parents. Or they live

at home and are always challenging the

parents openly or in their minds. "I want...

I will do this..." and they may not tell the

                        parents at all.

Where do the children of strong-will go after

age 20, how many willful adults carry

out a battle with everyone around them

with an attitude "No body is going to tell me

                        what to do."

I ask you in the world today where the will of many

is to do what ever they want, why do you think

community and religious life is declining.

Did you ever see little willful boys fighting on the

playground? Did you see people competing in

an argument, just to be in the lead? How

many arguments go on everyday in which the

person wants the satisfaction of being " in-the-

                        lead."

How will the Church ever be supported by religious

communities living in harmony if the evil

serpent the devil makes greater and greater

strides trying to get people to be

                        more willful and disharmonious.

Today the devil is pulling the wool over the

eyes of many as the world goes more and more

in a selfish direction of individuals,

conquering and controlling for their own

                        personal gain.

They try to make this world their kingdom.

They try to be on top, they don't want anyone

                            over them.

I am the King of heaven and earth.

                        My people support My Kingdom.

Look at all the movie actors and children

in schools being taught to promote

                            themselves.

What if all the work of all the people were

done for the honor and glory of God

and not their own selfish honor and

                        glory.

                    Who do you live for?

                        FOR YOURSELF

                        FOR YOUR GOD?

                    Do you LIVE TO PROMOTE

                        MY KINGDOM.

                    THE FATHER IS YOUR FATHER.

Religious communities must be founded where

women are not fighting with men,

                        trying to be priests

Look at the Virgin Mary as your model —

Excerpt from Tell My People

Spiritual Childhood

Mary: "My beloved priest-son, how I love to enfold you in my arms as my little child! Enfolded in my arms in my maternal embrace, I press you against my Immaculate Heart. I draw you within my Heart. There, through my maternal intercession, I clothe you with Jesus' graces. As you dwell in my Heart, I place you ever more deeply within Jesus' Heart and there the Holy Spirit fashions you increasingly in the image of my Son. As you grow in the likeness of Jesus, He takes you ever closer to the Father.

"Thus, as you grow in the sense of your helplessness without God, the stronger you become in Jesus. Childlike thus becomes strength. The smaller you become in living out spiritual childhood, the taller you stand beside Jesus. Weakness becomes strength, your sense of helplessness becomes spiritual maturity!

"Tell all my children about the wonders of spiritual childhood! Tell them to come to me and I will school them in its ways. How I love all my children! Oh, how I love to exercise my motherhood toward them all!"

Reflection: In the Gospel, Jesus speaks emphatically to us about spiritual childhood: "At this time the disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, 'I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven'" (Matthew 18:1-4).

John 18: 33-40

So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and called Jesus to him and asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Jesus replied, ‘Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?’ Pilate answered, ‘Am I a Jew? But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me, then, to release for you the king of the Jews?’ At this they shouted, ‘Not this man,’ they said, ‘but Barabbas.’ Barabbas was a bandit.

John 19: 1-22

Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged; and after this, the soldiers twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on his head and dressed him in a purple robe. They kept coming up to him and saying, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ and slapping him in the face.

Pilate came outside again and said to them, ‘Look, I am going to bring him out to you to let you see that I find no case against him.’ Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, ‘Here is the man.’ When they saw him, the chief priests and the guards shouted, ‘Crucify him! Crucify him!’ Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves and crucify him: I find no case against him.’ The Jews replied, ‘We have a Law, and according to that Law he ought to be put to death, because he has claimed to be Son of God.’

When Pilate heard them say this his fears increased. Re–entering the Praetorium, he said to Jesus, ‘Where do you come from?’ But Jesus made no answer. Pilate then said to him, ‘Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?’ Jesus replied, ‘You would have no power over me at all if it had not been given you from above; that is why the man who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.’

Jesus is condemned to death

From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him free, but the Jews shouted, ‘If you set him free you are no friend of Caesar’s; anyone who makes himself king is defying Caesar.’ Hearing these words, Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated him on the chair of judgement at a place called the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha.

The crucifixion

They then took charge of Jesus, and carrying his own cross he went out to the Place of the Skull or, as it is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified him with two others, one on either side, Jesus being in the middle. Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: ‘Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews’. This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate, ‘You should not write "King of the Jews", but that the man said, "I am King of the Jews". ’ Pilate answered, ‘What I have written, I have written.’

136. THE FOURTH DAY

        A MEDITATION ON TWO STANDARDS

The one of Christ, our supreme leader and lord,
the other of Lucifer, the deadly enemy of our
human nature

PRAYER.   The usual preparatory prayer.

window at a former Jesuit Seminary

137. FIRST PRELUDE.   This is the history. Here it will be that Christ calls and wants all beneath His standard, and Lucifer, on the other hand, wants all under his.

138. SECOND PRELUDE.   This is a mental representation of the place. It will be here to see a great plain, comprising the whole region about Jerusalem, where the sovereign Commander-in-Chief of all the good is Christ our Lord; and another plain about the region of Babylon, where the chief of the enemy is Lucifer.

139. THIRD PRELUDE.   This is to ask for what I desire. Here it will be to ask for a knowledge of the deceits of the rebel chief and help to guard myself against them; and also to ask for a knowledge of the true life exemplified in the sovereign and true Commander, and the grace to imitate Him.

FIRST PART

THE STANDARD OF SATAN

140. FIRST POINT.   Imagine you see the chief of all the enemy in the vast plain about Babylon, seated on a great throne of fire and smoke, his appearance inspiring horror and terror.

141. SECOND POINT.   Consider how he summons innumerable demons, and scatters them, some to one city and some to another, throughout the whole world, so that no province, no place, no state of life, no individual is overlooked.

142. THIRD POINT.   Consider the address he makes to them, how he goads them on to lay snares for men and bind them with chains. First they are to tempt them to covet riches (as Satan himself is accustomed to do in most cases) that they may the more easily attain the empty honors of this world, and then come to overweening pride.

The first step, then, will be riches, the second honor, the third pride. From these three steps the evil one leads to all other vices.

SECOND PART

THE STANDARD OF CHRIST

143.   In a similar way, we are to picture to ourselves the sovereign and true Commander, Christ our Lord.

144. FIRST POINT.   Consider Christ our Lord, standing in a lowly place in a great plain about the region of Jerusalem, His appearance beautiful and attractive.

145. SECOND POINT.   Consider how the Lord of all the world chooses so many persons, apostles, disciples, etc., and sends them throughout the whole world to spread His sacred doctrine among all men, no matter what their state or condition.

146. THIRD POINT.   . . .

Excerpt from Response in Christ

by Father Edward Carter, S.J.

           b) Christ as King

Vatican II reminds us that Christ is not only prophet, but also king: "Christ, becoming obedient even unto death and because of this exalted by the Father. . . , entered into the glory of His kingdom. To Him all things are made subject until he subjects himself and all created things to the Father that God may be all in all."5

Through His Incarnation, Christ as man became king over creation. In assuming a human nature, He united to Himself man and also the material creation below man. In the words of Teilhard de Chardin, Christ is the physical center of the Universe.6 Through His redemptive sacrifice, which is the culminating act of His Incarnation, Christ strengthened His title as king.

Christ has redeemed man, and as a consequence of man's redemption, the whole physical universe has been redeemed.7 The appropriateness of nonrational creation being redeemed together with man himself is evident. In God's original act of creation He gave man dominion over material creation. This part of creation was meant to serve man in his quest for happiness here and hereafter. With the intrusion of sin into God's creation, man and nonrational creation were both affected. Through his misuse of God's creation by sin, man not only puts disorder into himself, but also into the creation which he misuses.

Christ's redemption is meant to restore the disarray caused by man's sinfulness. Christ through His redemptive grace desires to heal more and more the sinfulness of man as this affects man himself and man's relationship to the material universe. Christ as king wants His redemptive grace to spread out and touch deeply man and the physical universe. With grace man relates properly to the material universe, for he more and more brings the material universe back to its role in God's creation, namely, that it serve man in achieving his temporal and eternal happiness. What is man's happiness? Because of the Incarnation, there is now only one destiny for man both here and hereafter. That destiny is a supernatural one in Christ. The material universe, through Christ's redemptive Incarnation, has therefore entered into this supernatural structure. Man and the physical universe have both been marked with the blood of Christ. More and more they are to be Christianized, that is, ever more perfectly drawn into the supernatural order established by Christ and centered in Him.

To extend this kingly influence of Christ over creation is the task now of both Christ and His Church. We have long been aware that this means deepening and extending Christ's kingdom as regards man himself. But we are just beginning to realize what it means to extend His kingdom to everything which pertains to man. Vatican II, in opening up the Church to everything which is good in the world, has impressed upon us the fact that the Church, in prolonging Christ's kingly mission, must be deeply involved not only with man himself, but with everything which is of authentic concern to man. The council unmistakably tells us this: "The faithful, therefore, must learn the deepest meaning and the value of all creation, as well as its role in the harmonious praise of God. They must assist each other to live holier lives even in their secular occupations. In this way the world may be permeated by the spirit of Christ and it may more effectively fulfill its purpose in justice, charity and peace."8

All within the Church are called to extend the influence of Christ as king. Each member of the People of God has a share in this kingly mission. Each must fulfill his role according to his vocation, talents, opportunities and graces. But fulfill his role he must. No one but the individual Christian in question can fulfill the particular role which God has intended for that individual. The Christian's quest for holiness is thus intimately connected with his response to Christ the king. The more ideally each Christian responds to this call of Christ, the more the entire Church can fulfill her mission of continuing Christ's kingly mission. This mission consists in imprinting the name of Jesus Christ more deeply upon the entire universe, men and matter alike.

Isaiah 2: 1-5

The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

It will happen in the final days
that the mountain of Yahweh’s house
will rise higher than the mountains
and tower above the heights.
Then all the nations will stream to it,
many peoples will come to it and say,
‘Come, let us go up
    to the mountain of Yahweh,
to the house of the God of Jacob
that he may teach us his ways
so that we may walk in his paths.’
For the Law will issue from Zion
and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.

Then he will judge between the nations
and arbitrate between many peoples.
They will hammer their swords
    into ploughshares
and their spears into sickles.
Nation will not lift sword against nation,
no longer will they learn how to make war.

House of Jacob, come,
let us walk in Yahweh’s light.

Sing: Crown Him With Many Crowns

Isaiah 29: 17-24

Is it not true that in a very short time
the Lebanon
    will become productive ground,
so productive you might take it
    for a forest?
That day the deaf
will hear the words of the book
and, delivered from shadow and darkness,
the eyes of the blind will see.
The lowly will find ever more joy
    in Yahweh
and the poorest of people
    will delight in the Holy One of Israel;
for the tyrant will be no more,
    the scoffer has vanished
and all those on the look–out for evil
    have been destroyed:
those who incriminate others
    by their words,
those who lay traps for the arbitrator
    at the gate
and groundlessly deprive the upright
    of fair judgement.
That is why Yahweh,
God of the House of Jacob,
Abraham’s redeemer, says this,
‘No longer shall Jacob be disappointed,
no more shall his face grow pale,
for when he sees his children,
my creatures, home again with him,
he will acknowledge my name as holy,
he will acknowledge
the Holy One of Jacob to be holy
and will hold the God of Israel in awe.
Erring spirits will learn to understand
and murmurers accept instruction.’

Isaiah 61: 4-9

They will rebuild the ancient ruins,
they will raise what has long lain waste,
they will restore the ruined cities,
all that has lain waste for ages past.
Strangers will come forward
    to feed your flocks,
foreigners be your ploughmen
    and vinedressers;

but you will be called ‘priests of Yahweh’
and be addressed as ‘ministers of our God’.
You will feed on the wealth of nations,
you will supplant them in their glory.
To make up for your shame,
    you will receive double;
instead of disgrace,
    shouts of joy will be their lot;
yes, they will have a double portion
    in their country
and everlasting joy will be theirs.

For I am Yahweh: I love fair judgement,
I hate robbery and wrong–doing,
and I shall reward them faithfully
and make an everlasting covenant
    with them.
Their race will be famous
    throughout the nations
and their offspring
    throughout the peoples.
All who see them will admit
that they are a race
    whom Yahweh has blessed.

Transfiguration

Then he said, ‘In truth I tell you, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.

‘Anyone who welcomes one little child like this in my name welcomes me.

In truth I tell you, if he finds it, it gives him more joy than do the

Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in heaven that one of
these little ones should be lost.

10. Matthew 11: 25
