Second Sunday of Easter

Acts 5: 12-16

The apostles worked many signs and miracles among the people. One in heart, they all used to meet in the Portico of Solomon. No one else dared to join them, but the people were loud in their praise and the numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased steadily. Many signs and wonders were worked among the people at the hands of the apostles so that the sick were even taken out into the streets and laid on beds and sleeping–mats in the hope that at least the shadow of Peter might fall across some of them as he went past. People even came crowding in from the towns round about Jerusalem, bringing with them their sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and all of them were cured.

Psalm 118: 2-4, 13-15, 22-24

Let the House of Israel say,
‘His faithful love endures for ever.’
Let the House of Aaron say,
‘His faithful love endures for ever.’
Let those who fear Yahweh say,
‘His faithful love endures for ever.’

I was pushed hard, to make me fall,
but Yahweh came to my help.
Yahweh is my strength and my song,
he has been my Saviour.

Shouts of joy and salvation,
in the tents of the upright,
‘Yahweh’s right hand is triumphant,

The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
This is Yahweh’s doing,
and we marvel at it.
This is the day which Yahweh has made,
a day for us to rejoice and be glad.

Revelation 1: 9-13, 17-19

I, John, your brother and partner in hardships, in the kingdom and in perseverance in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos on account of the Word of God and of witness to Jesus; it was the Lord’s Day and I was in ecstasy, and I heard a loud voice behind me, like the sound of a trumpet, saying, ‘Write down in a book all that you see, and send it to the seven churches of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.’ I turned round to see who was speaking to me, and when I turned I saw seven golden lamp–stands and, in the middle of them, one like a Son of man, dressed in a long robe tied at the waist with a belt of gold

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead, but he laid his right hand on me and said, ‘Do not be afraid; it is I, the First and the Last; I am the Living One, I was dead and look—I am alive for ever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and of Hades. Now write down all that you see of present happenings and what is still to come.

John 20: 19-31

In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you,’ and, after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you.

    ‘As the Father sent me,
    so am I sending you.’

After saying this he breathed on them and said:

    Receive the Holy Spirit.
    If you forgive anyone’s sins,
    they are forgiven;
    if you retain anyone’s sins,
    they are retained.

Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, ‘We have seen the Lord,’ but he answered, ‘Unless I can see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you,’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him:

You believe because you can see me.
Blessed are those who have not seen
        and yet believe.

There were many other signs that Jesus worked in the sight of the disciples, but they are not recorded in this book. These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing this you may have life through his name.

Second Sunday of Easter

April 7, 2013

INTRODUCTION – (Acts 5:12-16; Rev. 1:9-11a,12-13, 17-19; John 20:19-31) A new power has revealed itself in our world through the resurrection of Jesus. It is a creative power, a power that offers eternal life and peace and joy and love, a power that is not aimed at the destruction of anything, except for the destruction of sin. We see that power at work in its various forms today. In today’s gospel we see that power at work on Easter Sunday night in that death could not destroy Jesus, but his resurrection was the beginning of eternal life for him and for all who followed him. Jesus shared with his followers the same Holy Spirit that filled him and he gave them the gift to be able to forgive sins by his power. Our first reading shows how the Church grows rapidly from the beginning due to the preaching of the apostles and the gifts of healing given to the early church. When we hear our second reading, we realize this was a time many years later. The Church was going through a time of serious persecution. God assured his people he would not leave them. “Do not be afraid,” he told them. He begins to reveal what the future holds for God’s people, difficult times, but victory when it’s all over.

HOMILY – A mother took her little three year-old son to Mass for the first time. The child got impatient waiting for Mass to start. Turning to his mother the boy asked, “When does Jesus get here?” I wonder if that’s what the Apostle Thomas was asking himself all week after the other apostles had told him they had seen the Lord. It must have been dreadful wondering if Jesus would appear again and if so when. It happens, not by accident, that Jesus appears the following Sunday; I say not by accident, because Sunday would replace the Sabbath and would become the day on which Christ’s followers would meet together to hear the teachings of the apostles about Jesus.

My early days as a priest proved to be very difficult times. It was right after the second Vatican Council, and there was a lot of stress that came along with the changes of Vatican II. Going out into a career of being a street cleaner was much more appealing sometimes than teaching school and adjusting to new ways of doing things. I didn’t have any problem with the changes of Vatican II but some of the pastors I lived with sure didn’t like them and they didn’t particularly like anyone who promoted them. I prayed for peace inside myself. One day I heard this gospel where Jesus said to his apostles: “Peace be with you.” I had heard it many times before, but on that particular occasion it sounded as if Jesus was speaking to me personally: “Peace be with you!” I thought, “well, why shouldn’t peace be with me. It’s something Jesus wants for me and it’s something I wanted for myself ” so when I prayed for peace, I knew it had to come. It did, slowly but definitely. When you pray for something you know Jesus wants and you want too, how can it not happen?

There are a lot of things in today’s gospel that will lead us to peace: the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, the forgiveness of sins, the gathering in prayer on the Lord’s day and hearing his word, the act of faith we make in Jesus, even if we have not seen him with our eyes. Even in the midst of later persecutions, which the Church had to face, Jesus said, “Do not be afraid.” How can a person not have peace if peace is something we want for ourselves and it is something Jesus wants for us (and it is something only he can give)? Peace be with you. Amen.

He Never Leaves Our Side (excerpt)

December 2, 1993 5:30a.m.

Jesus: ... I am the way, the truth and the light. No one goes to the Father except through Me. Make ready a place that I may continually dwell in your hearts. Your trials do not cut you off from Me. Keep praying and casting out Satan. Keep thinking of Me and My love for you. I do the work in your heart. I make your heart experience Me more and more. You remain open and willing. Satan wants you to give up, to get frustrated. You say things you regret. He tries you and tries you with little things and when you are tired he has a greater chance to get to you. He uses innocent people around you to attack you with angry words or looks or gestures. Do not give him any power.

Come and rest in My arms. Find shelter from the scorching sun by abiding in My shade. I am there ready with solace for your troubled and tired soul. See Me in the eyes of all your brothers. See them as My children. Try to get beyond their imperfections to the fact that they reflect Me in their souls, even when it is hard to see it. I am here. You think I move when you are tired and I am mad because you are being tested. I am closest in these trials and I am there to comfort and love you. Run to My arms. I await with the warmest hug. Cast the devil out. He is lurking around. Like a cap, he comes on and won't leave you alone. Only I can help you take him off. Cast him out by My name. Keep saying Jesus and thinking of the Blood I shed for love of you.

Two angels sit by your side. They come in the night to escort Me. I am surrounded by things like this. You do not know and you do not see what is there with you at all times. You are as a player on the stage but you are being watched and guarded by many outside forces. Stay attuned to the good that surrounds you constantly. Angels go with Me wherever I go. Mary is always by My side. You are escorted by a choir of angels. Believe Me. Satan has only limited power. He is just so irritating! He is there. He wants to trip you. I am there too, escorted by a heavenly choir. I surround you with My love and My arms are open. Run to Me and find refuge in My arms.

I love you so. Alleluia, Alleluia.
