Romans 9: 25

Just as he says in the book of Hosea: I shall tell those who were not my people, 'You are my people,' and I shall take pity on those on whom I had no pity.

1 Thessalonians 4: 7

God called us to be holy, not to be immoral;

                Jesus: I build a bridge —
I lead man closer to Me —
I give the Shepherds of Christ Movement

Romans 11: 29

There is no change of mind on God's part about the gifts he has made or of his choice.

1 Corinthians 1: 26

Consider, brothers, how you were called; not many of you are wise by human standards, not many influential, not many from noble families.

1 Corinthians 7: 20

Everyone should stay in whatever state he was in when he was called.

Ephesians 4: 1

I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you therefore to lead a life worthy of the vocation to which you were called.

Ephesians 4: 4

There is one Body, one Spirit, just as one hope is the goal of your calling by God.

2 Thessalonians 1: 9

Their punishment is to be lost eternally, excluded from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength

Hebrews 3: 1

That is why all you who are holy brothers and share the same heavenly call should turn your minds to Jesus, the apostle and the high priest of our profession of faith.

2 Peter 1: 10

Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or calling to waver; then there will be no danger of your stumbling,

Psalm 147: 4

counts out the number of the stars,
and gives each one of them a name.

John 10: 3

the gatekeeper lets him in, the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep and leads them out.

Romans 10: 13

for all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Matthew 20: 16

Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.'

Romans 8: 28

We are well aware that God works with those who love him, those who have been called in accordance with his purpose, and turns everything to their good.

Romans 8: 30

it was those so destined that he called; those that he called, he justified, and those that he has justified he has brought into glory.

1 Corinthians 7: 15

But if the unbeliever chooses to leave, then let the separation take place: in these circumstances, the brother or sister is no longer tied. But God has called you to live in peace:

1 Peter 2: 9

But you are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession to sing the praises of God who called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

2 Peter 1: 3

By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, through the knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.

1 John 3: 1

You must see what great love
the Father has lavished on us
by letting us be called God's children-
which is what we are!
The reason why the world
    does not acknowledge us
is that it did not acknowledge him.

                Response

Psalm 38: 14

I am like the one who, hearing nothing,
has no sharp answer to make.

Job 13: 22

Then call me forward and I shall answer,
or rather, I shall speak and you will answer.

Job 31: 14

what shall I do, when God stands up?
What shall I say, when he holds his assize?

Job 40: 7

Brace yourself like a fighter,
I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!

Psalm 102: 2

Do not turn away your face from me
when I am in trouble;
bend down and listen to me,
when I call, be quick to answer me!

Psalm 143: 1

Yahweh, hear my prayer,
listen to my pleading;
in your constancy answer me,
in your saving justice;

Proverbs 15: 23

Anyone who has a ready answer has joy too:
how satisfying is the apt reply!

Isaiah 50: 2

Why was there no one there when I came?
Why did no one answer when I called?
Is my hand too short to redeem?
Have I not strength to save?
Look, with a threat I can dry the sea,
and turn rivers to desert;
the fish in them go rotten for want of water
and die of thirst.

TAKE, LORD, AND RECEIVE

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory,
my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have
and possess. Thou hast given all to me. To Thee, O
Lord, I return it. All is Thine, dispose of it wholly
according to Thy will. Give me Thy love and Thy
grace, for this is sufficient for me.

91. THE CALL OF AN EARTHLY KING

This will help us to contemplate the life of the
    eternal king

Prayer. The preparatory prayer will be as usual.

First Prelude.  This is a mental representation of the
place. Here it will be to see in imagination the
synagogues, villages, and towns where Christ our
Lord preached.

Second Prelude.  I will ask for the grace I desire.
Here it will be to ask of our Lord the grace not to be
deaf to His call, but prompt and diligent to accomplish
His most holy will.

                            FIRST PART

92. First Point.  This will be to place before my mind
a human king, chosen by God our Lord Himself, to
whom all Christian princes and people pay homage
and obedience.

93. Second Point.  This will be to consider the address
this king makes to all his subjects, with the words: "It
is my will to conquer all the lands of the infidel. There-
fore, whoever wishes to join with me in this enterprise
must be content with the same food, drink, clothing,
etc. as mine. So, too, he must work with me by day,
and watch with me by night, etc., that as he has had a
share in the toil with me, afterwards, he may share in
the victory with me."

From The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
    by Louis J. Puhl, S.J.  p. 120

                         275. THE VOCATION OF THE APOSTLES

FIRST POINT. St. Peter and St. Andrew seem to have
been called three times. First, to some knowledge of
our Lord. This is evident from the first chapter of St.
John. Secondly, to a following of Christ in some way,
but with the intention of returning to the possessions
they had left. St. Luke tells us this in the fifth chapter.
Thirdly, to follow Christ our Lord forever, St.
Matthew, chapter four, and St. Mark, chapter one.

                         S
ECOND POINT. He called Philip, as we read in the first
chapter of St. John. He called Matthew, as is recorded
by St. Matthew himself in the ninth chapter.

                         T
HIRD POINT. He called the other Apostles, of whom
no special call is mentioned in the Gospel.
Three other points must also be considered:

                             1. That the Apostles were uneducated and from a
                         humble condition of life.
                             2. The dignity to which they were so gently called.
                             3. The gifts and graces by which they were raised
above all the Fathers of the Old and New Testaments.

The Apostles sent to preach

Matthew 10: 1-16

He summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to drive them out and to cure all kinds of disease and all kinds of illness.

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who was also his betrayer. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows:

‘Do not make your way to gentile territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go instead to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those suffering from virulent skin–diseases, drive out devils. You received without charge, give without charge. Provide yourselves with no gold or silver, not even with coppers for your purses, with no haversack for the journey or spare tunic or footwear or a staff, for the labourer deserves his keep.

‘Whatever town or village you go into, seek out someone worthy and stay with him until you leave. As you enter his house, salute it, and if the house deserves it, may your peace come upon it; if it does not, may your peace come back to you. And if anyone does not welcome you or listen to what you have to say, as you walk out of the house or town shake the dust from your feet. In truth I tell you, on the Day of Judgement it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town. Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; so be cunning as snakes and yet innocent as doves.

We wanted a little place she could rest

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:

"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.

"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.

"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."

- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,
feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)
