                  August 21, 2010

                            Every person is unique.

We are born different  — raised different
and have been created uniquely by
                                God  —

It is a choice to love.
It is a choice to obey.

Parents help us to learn about
                                love and obedience, but
in the end  — we are
                                accountable for how
we love and obey God  —

                            God gives us the commandments
                                to obey them  —

                            The greatest commandment of God
                                demands we love God and
                                love others as ourselves  —

                            Some had both parents  —

                            Some divorced.

Some parents died, one or both  —

                            Some raised by others than
                                parents  —

Some sent to boarding school  —

Parents or guardians taught us about
                                love and obedience  —

Many older people today grew up
in World War II days  —

                            A world at war  —

                            Some were forced to serve
                                in these wars  —

                            Some people are married  —

                            Some married many times

                            Some never married

                            Many raise children

The road we are walking is in
                                different paths, but
the rules God gives us to live
                                by are the same  —

We are born with original sin and
                                even though baptism takes
                                away original sin our
                                human natures are wounded and
                                we have strong tendencies toward
the deadly sins  — the capital sins  —

To the degree we rebel against
God's will we can go more
and more into these deadly sins
                                that deprive us of life
when we sin by them —

We have a choice to obey God's will
or rebel against God's will  —

Satan  — the fallen angel said
                                "I will not serve, God."

                            Satan wants people to say
"I will not serve God  —
                                I want what I want when I
                                   want it  — "

To the degree we rebel against
                                    God's will  — we live
                                    in disharmony with God
                                    the Creator and our fellow
                                    men.

God has called us to live
harmoniously with others building His Kingdom
God has commanded us to love Him with our whole
heart, our whole soul and our whole being and to love our
                            neighbor as ourselves  —
God has called us to work in harmony and love according
                            to His Plan  —

We say "yes" to God  — like Mary  —

Or we say "yes" to disobedience
against God's will and thus live
                                disharmoniously in our lives
                                with others  —

We can project our hatred with others on innocent others  —
Authority can be rebelled against because of our own rebellion to
authority  — "nobody will tell me what to do."

                            God has a Plan  —

God created, us , creatures to serve
Him  — to be obedient to Him  —
to love  — to live according to
the order He wants in obedience
to Him  — serving and loving God
                                    and others  —

Working together by His rules  —

                                Fr. Carter taught me the
                            rule of the spiritual life
obedience to God's will in love  —

                            God is first
                            we are under Him  —

Our life lived to obey God  — our Creator and
He who keeps us in existence  —

                            Peace and Justice

Living according to God's will  —

                            Obedience to God the Father

Loving God and others brings peace.

                            Today's Readings

Ezekiel 43: 1-7

He took me to the gate, the one facing east. I saw the glory of the God of Israel approaching from the east. A sound came with him like the sound of the ocean, and the earth shone with his glory. This vision was like the one I had seen when I had come for the destruction of the city, and like the one I had seen by the River Chebar. Then I fell to the ground.

The glory of Yahweh arrived at the Temple by the east gate. The Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; I saw the glory of Yahweh fill the Temple. And I heard someone speaking to me from the Temple while the man stood beside me. He said, ‘Son of man, this is the dais of my throne, the step on which I rest my feet. I shall live here among the Israelites for ever; and the House of Israel, they and their kings, will never again defile my holy name with their whorings and the corpses of their kings,

Psalm 85: 9-14

His saving help is near for those who fear him,
his glory will dwell in our land.

Faithful Love and Loyalty join together,
 Saving Justice and Peace embrace.
Loyalty will spring up from the earth,
and Justice will lean down from heaven.

Yahweh will himself give prosperity,
and our soil will yield its harvest.
Justice will walk before him,
treading out a path

Matthew 23: 1-12

Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses. You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, since they do not practise what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they! Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels, like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues, being greeted respectfully in the market squares and having people call them Rabbi.

‘You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and you are all brothers. You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Anyone who raises himself up will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be raised up.

We see the rebellion in the Old Testament  —

We see how they suffered for their sins  —

They become overcome by their enemies
                                when they disobeyed God.

In the Gospel  — they were concerned
with ritual and their hearts are
                                far from them  —

Their heart is far from what
                                they are doing  —

Practices to be seen by others  — not in their hearts  —

They are faithful to themselves  —

Jesus says  — Practice what you preach

Live by the Father's will  —
                                    God is our Master  —
Let the truth be in you  —

R:  Our earthly fathers are a gift
from God  — they guide us  — they
help us  — God works in structure  —

Every person is a gift of God  —

To the extent a person rebels against
God's plan we are disharmonious  —
                                  We need God's mercy
                                  We need God's forgiveness

We are to be witnesses how we
                                   follow God's will  —

Our lives are to be lived that we
grow more and more in the image
                                   and likeness of God  —

                            Jesus served  —
                            Jesus the suffering servant  —

Jesus born in poverty  — in a stable
                                    to serve man.

Jesus died on the cross for our sins.
The Mass is the sacrifice of Calvary
                                    sacramentally made present  —

                            God the Father  —

We want to be one with Jesus in
offering our lives to serve You and
                                    obey You  —

We offer ourselves united to the sacrifice
                                    of Calvary  — sacramentally made
                                    present  —

We are sorry for our sins and the sins
                                    of the human race  —

                                We praise You, God  —

We want to make reparation for
our sins and the sins of the
human race in this Mass  —

We love You so much, God  — we
unite to this Holy Sacrifice  —

We unite to Jesus, the sacrifice of Jesus  —

We petition You for grace for ourselves
and the world and the priest and  the
                                     Movement  —

We cry out God help us  — In the Holy Spirit
through the intercession of Mary, Our
Mother, the angels and saints and
the souls in purgatory, we pray.

Through Him, With Him and In Him  —

                            Say Our Father

The Our Father

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

                                Say Lamb of God

Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

To the degree a person does not love God
                                and others  —
they can work out this disharmony and
misery they have in their heart from not loving and
rebelling against God  — on others  —

                            God is over us  —
We are to be obedient to Him  —

We see the devil wanted God to bow and worship
him after Jesus fasted for 40
days  — in the desert  —

The devil wants people to give him their
                                power, by making themselves over
those who they are to respect as over
                                them  —
                                constantly working out their disobedience,
                                    their unloving ways on others

So what is 'wrong' that they are doing  — the devil wants the
person to act like it is 'right', and to
                                fight others to enforce their
                                'untruth'.

And what is 'right'  — the devil wants
the person to act like it is
'wrong' and the devil deceives them,
wants them to fight for this 'untruth'.

The devil wants power  — from the one
                                rebelling against God  —
We see this in the fall  — Genesis 3  —
They were punished for disobeying God and so are we
                                because of their sin  —

The devil lured Eve into thinking she
would be wise like God  — She had a free will  —
because of pride she gave in  —
she wanted knowledge like God  —
She was filled with pride  —
                                She rebelled against God  —

Jesus came and paid for Adam and Eve's
                                sin and our sins  —

To the degree one is disobedient to God's
will  — they lack peace and
                                harmony with others  —

There is but one truth  —

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life  —

When we are unloving to others  —
                            When we provoke others  —

when we are envious  — wishing others harm  —
we violate the 5th commandment  —

                            The rules are clear  —

Jesus calls us to love  —

Jesus showed us how He was obedient to
                                His Father  —

Jesus was not like Adam  —

Jesus died doing the will of His Father  —

                            Jesus is love  —

Jesus served out of love  —

Jesus served because it was the
                                Father's will  —

                            Jesus is God

                            God is Supreme

Man is a creature of God  —

Man was created to serve God

Man was created to do God's Plan.

Man has a free will  —
to rebel like Adam and Eve did  —
to see their lives lived in rebelling
                                    against the rules and
then act like they didn't do anything.

The humble person lives with the truth
in them  — they recognize the evil and
good in them  — they want to know it  —
and they want to die to their evil ways
and live more the resurrected life  —

To sin and not to admit it, not take
                                responsibility for it, makes us
further and further from God  —
                                this makes us miserable,
                                hard in heart  —

                                tense  —

ready to argue  — I am right when
in fact  — we have wronged God
in our sin rebelling against Him and
                                    we need to repent  —
to say we are sorry  —
to tell the truth about our sins  —

                            God is love.

                            Song:  God's Love

Jesus shed His Blood for our sins.

                            Oh Heart of Jesus
make our hearts likened to Yours
                                make us Your instruments to
                                spread love and truth.

                            Oh Jesus we love You

                            Oh Jesus we love You

                            Oh Jesus we love You

Oh Jesus we are sorry for lying to
                                You when we sinned  —

Oh Jesus  — we repent for the way
                                we have offended You  —

                            Oh God help us  —

            Jesus says:

Be of a humble heart  —

You offend Me who is generous
to you by your sins against
                                    Me and your unloving ways
                                    toward your brothers  —

Messenger:     Oh Jesus spread Your Blood on us  —
                                      for our protection against
                                      the devil  —

                  Jesus:

The devil tells you, you are perfect
and he lies to you  —
then you become so hard in heart
lying when you sin  — you
                                    can deny your sin and
in pride offend Me further by
                                    lying  —

I know all your sins  —
I paid the price for your sins  —

Prayer for the Hardened Heart

Jesus, place Your hands on my brother. His heart is in need of Your healing. His heart is dark and hard and he needs You to melt all the hate and anger that has made his heart black and cold. Thaw his heart with the warmth of Your love. Let the fire of Your love turn his heart soft, vibrant, aglow inside, with Your rich love.

Let the heart be as Yours, red and filled as a furnace with Your love, red outside, burning with white light and heat inside. Melt the trouble away. Cast the devil and his hatred back to hell. Command him to stay there and never to return to the heart of my loved one. You are all powerful. You I adore and honor and praise. You I am forever thanking for Your great glory. You I love intently.

Thank You, Jesus, for responding to this heart.

We love You so!

Prayer for Union with Jesus

Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.

I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.

I am Yours, Lord. I want to have my life in You. I want to do the will of the Father. Give me the strength to put aside the world and let You operate my very being. Help me to act as You desire. Strengthen me against the distractions of the devil to take me from Your work.

When I worry, I have taken my focus off of You and placed it on myself. Help me not to give in to the promptings of others to change what in my heart You are making very clear to me. I worship You, I adore You and I love You. Come and dwell in me now.

-God's Blue Book, January 17, 1994

Act of Contrition

"O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen."

                            An Act of Love  —

Oh my God, I am sorry for
not loving You and offending You with
                            my pride and sins  —
I love you so very much God and I do not
want to offend You again with my sins  —
I am sorry how I hurt others being
jealous or judging them when they
                            were serving You  —

Oh Jesus spread Your blood on me and my
family and all I touch and protect us
from the evil one who prowls the
                                world seeking the destruction of
                                souls  —

Oh Jesus thank You for dying for me and
Oh Jesus thank  You for rising on the third day  —

Help me to be an instrument of love
                                to You and others  —

Oh Jesus, help me to give and not to count
                                the costs

Oh Jesus, help me to love You with my
whole heart, my whole soul and
                                my whole being  —

Oh God help me to be holy  —

I give my heart to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

                  Jesus:

To give and not to count the cost  —

Messenger:  Jesus my Lord, my God, my all how
can I love You as I ought  —

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Readings

Genesis 3: 9-15, 20

But Yahweh God called to the man. ‘Where are you?’ he asked. ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden,’ he replied. ‘I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.’ ‘Who told you that you were naked?’ he asked. ‘Have you been eating from the tree I forbade you to eat?’ The man replied, ‘It was the woman you put with me; she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.’ Then Yahweh God said to the woman, ‘Why did you do that?’ The woman replied, ‘The snake tempted me and I ate.’

Then Yahweh God said to the snake, ‘Because you have done this,

    Accursed be you
of all animals wild and tame!
On your belly you will go
and on dust you will feed
    as long as you live.
    I shall put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
    it will bruise your head
and you will strike its heel.’

The man named his wife 'Eve' because she was the mother of all those who live.

Psalm 98: 1-4

Sing a new song to Yahweh,
for he has performed wonders,
his saving power is in his right hand
and his holy arm.

Yahweh has made known his saving power,
revealed his saving justice for the nations to see,
mindful of his faithful love and his constancy
to the House of Israel.

The whole wide world has seen
the saving power of our God.
Acclaim Yahweh, all the earth,
burst into shouts of joy!

Ephesians 1: 3-6, 11-12

Blessed be God
the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us
with all the spiritual blessings of heaven
        in Christ.
Thus he chose us in Christ
    before the world was made
to be holy and faultless
    before him in love,
marking us out for himself beforehand,
    to be adopted sons,
        through Jesus Christ.
Such was his purpose and good pleasure,
to the praise of the glory of his grace,
his free gift to us in the Beloved,

And it is in him
that we have received our heritage,
marked out beforehand as we were,
under the plan of the One
    who guides all things
as he decides by his own will,
chosen to be,
for the praise of his glory,
the people who
would put their hopes in Christ
        before he came.

Luke 1: 26-38

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, you who enjoy God’s favour! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Look! You are to conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I have no knowledge of man?’ The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. And I tell you this too: your cousin Elizabeth also, in her old age, has conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.’ Mary said, ‘You see before you the Lord’s servant, let it happen to me as you have said.’ And the angel left her.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

December 8, 2007

INTRODUCTION  — The feast today is about Mary’s conception, that from the instant she began to exist on this earth, indeed from her very conception, she was holy, without sin and filled with God's grace. The gospel today can confuse us somewhat because it tells us about Jesus’ conception.  It was read, however, because of the greeting the angel used in appearing to her: “Hail, full of grace.”  Our feast celebrates that there was no moment in Mary’s life when there was sin, no moment when God’s grace did not fill her.

HOMILY  —  As we listen in on this conversation between Mary and the Angel, we learn both about Mary and about the child she will give birth to.  Mary’s child would be Son of the Most High and king forever.  He will be called “holy, the Son of God.”

This is why Mary was “full of grace,” so she could give birth to God’s own Son, who would be the source of all holiness.  We need to know this, not so that we can put Jesus and Mary on a pedestal and admire them from afar.  Jesus, the holy one of God came to us so that we too can become holy.  This is what St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading: “God chose us in him to be holy and blameless in his sight.”

Most of us do not think of our vocation as a call to holiness.  We all want to get to heaven, but most of us think of holiness as reserved for other people, like St. Francis or Mother Teresa.  Most of us are content to leave holiness for someone else.  We just want to get through heaven’s doors.  But no one will get to heaven unless they are holy, for holiness means being close to God and sharing God’s life.  And that’s what God’s grace does for us: it unites us with God and allows us to share in God’s life.  If we are in God’s grace, then, we are holy people.

Two stories we heard today tell us of our vocation to be holy:

The story in our first reading is about Adam and Eve, our first parents, who originally were very close to God and in their union with God, they were very happy.  That was the symbol of the Garden of Eden.  But they got greedy!  They wanted to be equal to God.  The evil one knew how to manipulate them and lead them to ignore God’s command.  As a result they lost all they had.

The second story in the gospel illustrates Mary’s constant attitude of being willing to say “yes” to God, an openness that prepared the way for the Son of God to come to us.

When we were baptized we were filled with God’s life, we were born again in God’s grace.  The very same grace that filled Mary at the moment of her conception, filled us when we were baptized.  None of us will ever be as holy as Mary was.  She got a head start on all of us.  But if we follow the example of Mary, always ready to say “yes” to God, that will lead us to holiness and to the joy and peace and love that comes with it.
