2 Chronicles 36: 14-17, 19-23

Furthermore, all the leaders of Judah, the priests and the people too, added infidelity to infidelity, copying all the shameful practices of the nations and defiling the Temple of Yahweh which he himself had consecrated in Jerusalem. Yahweh, God of their ancestors, continuously sent them word through his messengers because he felt sorry for his people and his dwelling, but they ridiculed the messengers of God, they despised his words, they laughed at his prophets, until Yahweh's wrath with his people became so fierce that there was no further remedy.

So against them he summoned the king of the Chaldaeans and he put their young men to the sword within the very building of their Temple, not sparing young man or girl, or the old and infirm; he put them all at his mercy.

He burned down the temple of God, demolished the walls of Jerusalem, burned all its palaces to the ground and destroyed everything of value in it. And those who had escaped the sword he deported to Babylon, where they were enslaved by him and his descendants until the rise of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfil Yahweh's prophecy through Jeremiah: Until the country has paid off its Sabbaths, it will lie fallow for all the days of its desolation–until the seventy years are complete.

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia–to fulfil the word of Yahweh through Jeremiah–Yahweh roused the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue a proclamation and to have it publicly displayed throughout his kingdom: 'Cyrus king of Persia says this, "Yahweh, the God of Heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and has appointed me to build him a Temple in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all his people, may his God be with him! Let him go up."

Psalm 137: 1-6

By the rivers of Babylon
we sat and wept
at the memory of Zion.
On the poplars there
we had hung up our harps.

For there our gaolers had asked us
to sing them a song,
our captors to make merry,
‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion.’

How could we sing a song of Yahweh
on alien soil?

If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand wither!

May my tongue remain stuck to my palate
if I do not keep you in mind,
if I do not count Jerusalem
the greatest of my joys.

Ephesians 2: 4-10

But God, being rich in faithful love, through the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our sins, brought us to life with Christ—it is through grace that you have been saved—and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven, in Christ Jesus.

This was to show for all ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, how extraordinarily rich he is in grace. Because it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith; not by anything of your own, but by a gift from God; not by anything that you have done, so that nobody can claim the credit. We are God’s work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has already designated to make up our way of life.

John 3: 14-21

as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert,
so must the Son of man be lifted up
    so that everyone who believes
may have eternal life in him.
For this is how God loved the world:
    he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
        may not perish
    but may have eternal life.
For God sent his Son into the world
    not to judge the world,
    but so that through him
        the world might be saved.
No one who believes in him
    will be judged;
    but whoever does not believe
        is judged already,
because that person does not believe
in the Name of God’s only Son.
    And the judgement is this:
though the light has come into the world
    people have preferred
    darkness to the light
    because their deeds were evil.
And indeed, everybody who does wrong
hates the light and avoids it,
    to prevent his actions
        from being shown up;
    but whoever does the truth
    comes out into the light,
so that what he is doing
may plainly appear as done in God.’

Fourth Sunday of Lent

March 26, 2006

INTRODUCTION – (2 Chronicles 36, 14-16.19-23; Eph. 2, 4-10; John 3, 14-21) Our first reading last Sunday was about the covenant God made with his people as they were traveling through the desert on their way from Egypt to the Promised Land. In that covenant God promised his people liberty, land, prosperity and he promised them they would be his special people. What God demanded of his people in return was obedience to his commandments, especially the ones we call "The Ten Commandments." Our first reading this week skips over seven centuries, centuries marked with religious fervor at times, but mostly characterized by indifference to God and to his laws. This indifference took its toll on their strength as a nation and when the powerful Babylonians came against God’s people around 600 B.C. they were unable to defend themselves. As a result their land was destroyed and those who managed to survive the Babylonian invasion were enslaved and deported to Babylon. Today’s first reading describes this calamity and how God freed them from their Babylonian captivity almost two generations later. Their liberation from Babylon took place when the Persian king, Cyrus, conquered the Babylonians. Just to help you visualize this, Persia was the land now occupied by Iran and Babylonia was in modern day Iraq. One last thought: next week we will hear Jeremiah promise that God would make a new covenant with his people since the old one was so poorly kept. We celebrate and renew God's new covenant as always as we celebrate the Eucharist today.

HOMILY – One of the central elements of our relationship with God is the idea of covenant. The word "covenant" is not a word we use everyday. It is a solemn and serious agreement, but it is more that that. It is a committed relationship between two people or two groups of people. About the only time we hear the word "covenant" today is in relation to marriage. But in the Bible we hear the word a lot. Last Sunday, this Sunday and next Sunday, in our first reading, we hear passages that referred to the covenant God made with his people. The author of the first reading tells us this covenant was broken more often than it was observed. Instead of giving up on us, however, God offered us a new covenant, sealed in the blood of his Son. It’s a covenant we renew and God renews with us every time we come to Mass.

God offers this new covenant to all people. As Jesus said: "God gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but might have eternal life." But not all people want to enter into a covenant of love with this God who sent his son. Again he tells us: "The light came into the world, but people preferred the darkness to light…"

God is our creator who knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows what is for our good, he knows what will lead us to peace and life, eternal life, but he also gave us a free will. He gave us a free will so we would be capable of returning his love. Only a free person can love. But with our free will we can also choose not to love. And making that choice not to love our God points us in a direction that leads away from eternal life and eternal happiness.

People with a concept of "covenant" (even if they’ve never heard the word "covenant," but who know they are in a relationship of love with God) know a God whom we can call Father, lover, spouse, friend, protector or savior. Without a notion of "covenant" we cannot really know God in a personal way. Without a notion of "covenant" God is seen perhaps as indifferent, overly punitive or overly permissive. I think most people today, who have no notion of "covenant," see God as some kind of indulgent parent who doesn’t know how to say "no" and who is so soft hearted he’s going to get everyone into heaven no matter how evil they may have been. Jesus did say "God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world," but he also said that whoever does not believe in him is already condemned because they preferred darkness to light. Jesus has done all that is possible, even to the extent of dying for us, so that we can discover the light, the life, the joy that his love can bring, but he cannot force it on us if we are closed to it.

I want to say something about baptism because that’s when we begin to live a new life, when we receive the light of Christ, when we enter into a covenant relationship with God. Often I have asked people when they come for the baptism of their child why they want their child baptized. The most common answer is because it washes away original sin. Those who have a deeper understanding of baptism tell me it is because baptism gives their child a sharing in Christ’s life. But even that answer is incomplete. Let me draw a comparison between baptism and natural birth. When a child is born, we say they are given the gift of life (although they had already received that gift at conception). But we also know that there’s a lot more to being born than simply receiving the gift of life. Natural birth is the beginning of a lengthy, complex process of growth, development, learning and maturation. So too is baptism the beginning of a process of growing in God’s love, learning to recognize God as our Father, learning to obey him, worship him, love him, pray to him. That describes a loving relationship with our God that is meant to continue into eternity. One word for that relationship is "covenant." When we come to Mass each week, we come so we don’t forget our covenant, that we are sharers in God’s life; so we don’t forget what Christ has done for us and what he asks of us in this relationship of love. We all know and God knows too how easily we forget things, so he gave us a way to remember: "Do this in memory of me." Thank you for being here today to hear once more of God’s love and to express your own love in prayer and praise. Amen.

Matthew 18: 21-35

Then Peter went up to him and said, ‘Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘Not seven, I tell you, but seventy–seven times.

Parable of the unforgiving debtor

‘And so the kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts with his servants. When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents; he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, to meet the debt. At this, the servant threw himself down at his master’s feet, with the words, "Be patient with me and I will pay the whole sum." And the servant’s master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt. Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow–servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him, saying, "Pay what you owe me." His fellow–servant fell at his feet and appealed to him, saying, "Be patient with me and I will pay you." But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt. His fellow–servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him. Then the master sent for the man and said to him, "You wicked servant, I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow–servant just as I had pity on you?" And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.’

Picture of the Sacred Heart of JesusForgive and Ask For Forgiveness

March 26, 1994

Jesus: My sweet one, the heart of God has no room for any anger and hate. You must stay rooted in love of Me. Relinquish any attachment to being wronged. You must forgive and be sorry for any of your words. You must always remain steadfast in My love. To get angry is not to spread My love. I am constantly by your side. Satan wants to create division. Only in union will My work be accomplished.

Pray for forgiveness. Forgive all those who have injured you. Your heart must be pure and full of love. I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. You need a pure heart to love. I command you to love God and love one another. If others offend you, be silent. I was silent when they scoffed at and persecuted Me.

You will suffer from those closest to you. Pray for their fear. Do not get angered. Pray for union with your brothers. My work is only accomplished in love. Satan taunts all those involved to create division. Speak only from a position of love. You must love as I loved you. I loved those who persecuted Me. Love all those who are hurting. Pray for their fear. I am here, little one. I never leave your side. I will always watch out for you. When God loves you as I do, it wounds Me that you get so caught up in others. I am here and I am God and I love you. Your brothers are suffering. You must always love in order to do My work.

You will be tested. You will be tried. You must rid yourself of all anger. Let go. Surrender. Fall into My loving arms. I am here waiting to catch you when you let go. Clean your heart at every second. Satan is lurking about to divide you and cause dissension. I am God and I speak to you. Do not give in to Satan. You must remain My light that shines in the dark night. I Love You!

Psalm 147: 12-13, 15-16, 19-20

Praise Yahweh, Jerusalem,
Zion, praise your God.

For he gives strength to the bars of your gates,
he blesses your children within you,

He sends his word to the earth,
his command runs quickly,
he spreads the snow like flax,
strews hoarfrost like ashes,

He reveals his word to Jacob,
his statutes and judgements to Israel.
For no other nation has he done this,
no other has known his judgements.

Jeremiah 7: 23-28

My one command to them was this: Listen to my voice, then I will be your God and you shall be my people. In everything, follow the way that I mark out for you, and you shall prosper. But they did not listen, they did not pay attention; they followed their own devices, their own stubborn and wicked inclinations, and got worse rather than better. From the day your ancestors left Egypt until today, I have sent you all my servants the prophets, persistently sending them day after day. But they have not listened to me, have not paid attention; they have deliberately resisted, behaving worse than their ancestors. So you will tell them all this, but they will not listen to you; you will call them, but they will not answer you." Then you are to say to them, "This is the nation that will neither listen to the voice of Yahweh its God nor take correction. Sincerity is no more, it has vanished from their mouths.

  Luke 11: 14-23

He was driving out a devil and it was dumb; and it happened that when the devil had gone out the dumb man spoke, and the people were amazed. But some of them said, ‘It is through Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that he drives devils out.’ Others asked him, as a test, for a sign from heaven; but, knowing what they were thinking, he said to them, ‘Any kingdom which is divided against itself is heading for ruin, and house collapses against house. So, too, with Satan: if he is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last?—since you claim that it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out. Now if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own sons drive them out? They shall be your judges, then. But if it is through the finger of God that I drive devils out, then the kingdom of God has indeed caught you unawares. So long as a strong man fully armed guards his own home, his goods are undisturbed; but when someone stronger than himself attacks and defeats him, the stronger man takes away all the weapons he relied on and shares out his spoil.

‘Anyone who is not with me is against me; and anyone who does not gather in with me throws away.

                Excerpt from March 11, 2010

If we flee to the highest mountain
                    He is there

In Baptism God gives us a sharing
                    in His life —
                    Our knowing and loving capacity
                        is elevated —

The Holy Spirit gives us His gifts to
                    help us get to heaven
                    WISDOM
                    KNOWLEDGE
                    UNDERSTANDING
                    COUNSEL
                    FORTITUDE
                    PIETY
                    FEAR OF THE LORD

We must be humble and recognize
we need God to lead us to God —
                    We need wisdom
We need God's grace to be good —
We are dependent on God —
                    God loves us —
God will give us gifts and
grace if we ask Him —

Sing: Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul.
Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.

                God gives us light

Our true home is in heaven

We were created for God —
God alone, ultimately, makes us happy —

                All men seek happiness —
We search a barren desert here below —
God is the source of our happiness —
We were created for Him —

We cannot run after false gods —
a false god can be putting
                    ourselves and our will 1st

                    wanting what we want when
                        we want it —

trying to prove we are right —
                        when in fact we offended
God and others by our sin

Giving into the 7 deadly sins
Pride, Greed, Envy, Wrath, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth

can cause us misery and tears

God is the I Am —
We were created for Him —
We were created in His image
                    and likeness —

We are to show this beauty to
our brothers in the world —
                    this God-likeness in being
                    good, being obedient,
                    being loving, being pure,
being as God wants us to be

Jesus is God — Jesus came to show
                    us how to be

Mary is our model, Mary was conceived
                    sinless

So the poor banished children of Adam and Eve
                    consecrate their hearts to the
New Adam and the New Eve —
                        Jesus and Mary

Act of consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

"Lord Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock, I consecrate myself to Your most Sacred Heart. From Your pierced Heart the Church was born, the Church You have called me, as a member of Shepherds of Christ Associates, to serve in a most special way. You reveal Your Heart as a symbol of Your love in all its aspects, including Your most special love for me, whom You have chosen as Your companion in this most important work. Help me to always love You in return. Help me to give myself entirely to You. Help me always to pour out my life in love of God and neighbor! Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You!

"Dear Blessed Virgin Mary, I consecrate myself to your maternal and Immaculate Heart, this Heart which is symbol of your life of love. You are the Mother of my Savior. You are also my Mother. You love me with a most special love as a member of Shepherds of Christ Associates, a movement created by your Son as a powerful instrument for the renewal of the Church and the world. In a return of love, I give myself entirely to your motherly love and protection. You followed Jesus perfectly. You are His first and perfect disciple. Teach me to imitate you in the putting on of Christ. Be my motherly intercessor so that, through your Immaculate Heart, I may be guided to an ever closer union with the pierced Heart of Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock."

We see the fall of Adam and Eve
                    the curse

And we see Easter in the Spring
Jesus died on a tree for our sins —

                Jesus had to die to
                Rise from the dead

Winter — Spring — new life

                God put us here —

Our existence depends on Him —

How can we smite Him and
expect Him to not make us
accountable for our hidden sins —

                God is all just —

Jesus shows us His Heart —

                The treasure of all treasures

Jesus gives us Himself — truly present in the Eucharist — today

All of creation bears the handprint of God.

We are to beg to see through God's eyes —
His plan for the world and for
                    His creation —

God intends us to see more and more
His vision and not see with
                    our tainted vision

                Christ is our light

                God created the world —
                    seen and unseen from nothing
man is the apex of creation
                    God created in order

Man who wants to think he is powerful
keeps trying to get men to be
                    more and more under him

                Pushing boundaries
                    hurting others out of selfishness
                    punishing others

All was created by God for meaning
                    and purpose

Cardinal Newman said

"... everyone who breathes, high and low,
educated and ignorant, young and old, man and woman,
has a mission, has a work. We are not sent
into this world for nothing; we are not born at
                    random. . . God sees every one of us;
He creates every soul, He lodges it in
a body, one by one, for a purpose. He needs,
He deigns to need, every one of us.
He has an end for each of us... we are
placed in our different ranks and stations, not to
get what we can out of them for ourselves, but to
labor in them for Him, as He rejoiced to do His work,
we must rejoice in ours also.

"What I say to you in the dark, tell in the day-
light; what you hear in whispers, proclaim
from the housetops."
(Matthew 10:27)

Jesus Has Come to Give Us Life

Jesus: "This is the day celebrating My Resurrection (Easter). The day of newness of life. I am Lord and Master. I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Tell My people to come to Me if they wish to experience life in abundance. I want to give all an ever greater share in the life of My Resurrection. Without Me you cannot be happy, nor have peace, nor have real joy. Tell My people to surrender to Me more and more. The more they do so, the more they will experience My love, wisdom, power, peace, joy, happiness, mercy, and goodness. Within My Heart My people will find these riches. I am Lord and Master! Please listen to My words."

Reflection: Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has come to give us life, and to give us this life in abundance.

When we were baptized, we were incorporated into Christ and His Church. When we were baptized, we received the life of sanctifying grace. This life is a created sharing in the life of the Trinity. Truly, we are called to live a God-like existence according to the teaching and example of Jesus! It is our duty and our privilege to develop our life of grace—our Christ-life—through our participation in the Mass, through the reception of the sacraments, through prayer, and through all other good works. Indeed, we are called to love God and neighbor more and more.

What a glorious life has been given to us! In a spirit of thanksgiving, and together with Mary our Mother, let us always strive to know Christ more intimately, to love Him more ardently, and to follow Him more closely, so that He will always bring us to a closer union with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

        Age of the Two Hearts

Jesus:  "My beloved priest-companion, I have allowed you to experience in extraordinary fashion the riches contained in My Heart and My Mother's Heart. I desire that you tell all My people about these riches. I desire that My people consecrate themselves to My Sacred Heart and to Mary's Immaculate Heart. My people are living in the beginnings of the age of the Two Hearts.

"After the time of the purification is completed, this new era of the Church and the world will become firmly established. This era will be characterized by the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. All those who consecrate themselves to My Heart and to My Mother's Heart will help to establish this glorious new age. I am Lord and Master. Please listen to My urgent request. Within Our Hearts you will experience the love and security, the peace and the joy, which you all desire. I love My people with a tremendous love, and in My love I give them this message!"

Work to Make Your World Better

Jesus: "My beloved companion, remind My people of their responsibility toward the world. They have a duty to try to make this a better world for all to live in.

"Today there is much which is wrong with the world. Sin covers the face of the earth. Sins of all kinds blemish the goodness of My Father's creation.

"However, My Mother and I are increasingly gathering our forces for the battle against Satan and his followers. We are more and more forming Our followers to wage the battle to win back that part of the world dominated by Satan's influence. We are forming our followers in the ways of love. We are forming Our followers with the grace which flows from the bosom of My Father, through My Heart, given in the Holy Spirit, and distributed through the intercession of the maternal and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

"We are forming Our followers to give themselves in the greatest love for God and neighbor. We are bringing them ever more closely to Our Hearts so that they may draw from the flames of love of My Heart and Mary's Heart! The more My followers dwell in Mary's Heart and My Heart, the more they are enlightened and strengthened to give themselves for the salvation of the world.

"I am Lord and Master. I ask all to follow Me and My Mother to help us bring forth the great age of love and peace for the world. This age will emerge after the phase of purification has been completed. This age will be characterized by the triumph of Mary's immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. In this great new age, soon to come, My people will love and praise My Father, with Mary and through Me and in the Holy Spirit, as never before!

"I love My people with a tremendous, burning love, and in this love I give them this message!"

Reflection: The world belongs to Christ. St. Paul tells us about this:

As he is the Beginning, he was first to be born from the dead, so that he should be first in every way, because God wanted all perfection to be found in him, and all things to be reconciled through him and for him, everything in heaven and everything on earth, when he made peace by his death on the cross (Colossians 1:18-20).

Since the world belongs to Christ, we, who are His followers, must have a great love for the world as created and redeemed by God. We must labor through our participation in the Mass and through all our other prayers and good works to more and more help the Christic image of the world to shine forth in ever greater splendor. This is our duty and our privilege. Out of love for God and neighbor, let's resolve to get on with the task!

God created a beautiful world before the fall —

All things were created good by God —

                The world was harmonious, good,
                    orderly without sin, violence
                    or evil —

There is peace and food —
                    no disease
                    no violence
                    no war

Genesis Chapter 3

Now, the snake was the most subtle of all the wild animals that Yahweh God had made. It asked the woman, 'Did God really say you were not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?' The woman answered the snake, 'We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden. But of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, "You must not eat it, nor touch it, under pain of death." ' Then the snake said to the woman, 'No! You will not die! God knows in fact that the day you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good from evil.' The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eye, and that it was enticing for the wisdom that it could give. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realised that they were naked. So they sewed fig-leaves together to make themselves loin-cloths.

The man and his wife heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. But Yahweh God called to the man. 'Where are you?' he asked. 'I heard the sound of you in the garden,' he replied. 'I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.' 'Who told you that you were naked?' he asked. 'Have you been eating from the tree I forbade you to eat?' The man replied, 'It was the woman you put with me; she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.' Then Yahweh God said to the woman, 'Why did you do that?' The woman replied, 'The snake tempted me and I ate.'

Then Yahweh God said to the snake, 'Because you have done this,

    Accursed be you
of all animals wild and tame!
On your belly you will go
and on dust you will feed
    as long as you live.
    I shall put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
    it will bruise your head
and you will strike its heel.'

    To the woman he said:

I shall give you intense pain
        in childbearing,
you will give birth to your children
        in pain.
Your yearning will be for your husband,
    and he will dominate you.

To the man he said, 'Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat,

Accursed be the soil because of you!
Painfully will you get your food from it
    as long as you live.
It will yield you brambles and thistles,
as you eat the produce of the land.
By the sweat of your face

    will you earn you food,
until you return to the ground,
as you were taken from it.
    For dust you are
and to dust you shall return.

The man named his wife 'Eve' because she was the mother of all those who live. Yahweh God made tunics of skins for the man and his wife and clothed them. Then Yahweh God said, 'Now that the man has become like one of us in knowing good from evil, he must not be allowed to reach out his hand and pick from the tree of life too, and eat and live for ever!' So Yahweh God expelled him from the garden of Eden, to till the soil from which he had been taken. He banished the man, and in front of the garden of Eden he posted the great winged creatures and the fiery flashing sword, to guard the way to the tree of life.

God breathes and there is life

Genesis 1: 7

Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, and man became a living being.

John 20: 22-23

After saying this he breathed on them and said:

Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive anyone's sins,
they are forgiven;
if you retain anyone's sins,
they are retained.

Sin is seeking to live independent
                    of God

After the fall of Adam and Eve
the harmony of the world is, now,
                    distorted

Adam and Eve and their descendents now
will have a fallen human nature —
but Mary and Jesus do not

the tendency toward the 7 deadly sins —
for those with the fallen human nature are:

Pride, Greed, Envy, Wrath, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth

                Man hides from God —
he now sees God with a distorted vision

                Because of our distorted image
of God we do not trust
                    God as we should —
                    We can flee His call

                There is now disobedience

                The order is disturbed
                    because of the fall —

                The harmony is not there

                The relationship between God and
                    Adam and Eve is ruptured

                Man sins
Man blames others for his sin —

                Concupiscence enters the world —

Romans 8: 5-9

Those who are living by their natural inclinations have their minds on the things human nature desires; those who live in the Spirit have their minds on spiritual things. And human nature has nothing to look forward to but death, while the Spirit looks forward to life and peace, because the outlook of disordered human nature is opposed to God, since it does not submit to God's Law, and indeed it cannot, and those who live by their natural inclinations can never be pleasing to God. You, however, live not by your natural inclinations, but by the Spirit, since the Spirit of God has made a home in you. Indeed, anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

1 Corinthians 15:20-28

In fact, however, Christ has been raised from the dead, as the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. As it was by one man that death came, so through one man has come the resurrection of the dead. Just as all die in Adam, so in Christ all will be brought to life; but all of them in their proper order: Christ the first-fruits, and next, at his coming, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he will hand over the kingdom to God the Father, having abolished every principality, every ruling force and power. For he is to be king until he has made his enemies his footstool, and the last of the enemies to be done away with is death, for he has put all things under his feet. But when it is said everything is subjected, this obviously cannot include the One who subjected everything to him. When everything has been subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to the One who has subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.

Genesis 3: 19

By the sweat of your face
   will you earn your food,
until you return to the ground,
as you were taken from it.
   For dust you are
and to dust you shall return.’

Luke 22: 44

In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

Sin upsets the order willed by God —

                Childbearing — PAIN

The earth cursed by Adam's sin

God does not abandon the human
race — even though Adam and Eve sinned

Romans 5: 12, 17-19

Well then; it was through one man that sin came into the world, and through sin death, and thus death has spread through the whole human race because everyone has sinned.

It was by one man’s offence that death came to reign over all, but how much greater the reign in life of those who receive the fullness of grace and the gift of saving justice, through the one man, Jesus Christ. One man’s offence brought condemnation on all humanity; and one man’s good act has brought justification and life to all humanity. Just as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience are many to be made upright.

                Cain and Abel —

Cain's sin is more grave now —
                    Blood of brother —
                    Cain lies to God

                    Life and Blood
                        connected

The Eucharist is a gift —

                God punishes Cain —

Genesis 7: 11-12, 17-24

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, and on the seventeenth day of the month, that very day all the springs of the great deep burst through, and the sluices of heaven opened. And heavy rain fell on earth for forty days and forty nights.

The flood lasted forty days on earth. The waters swelled, lifting the ark until it floated off the ground. The waters rose, swelling higher above the ground, and the ark drifted away over the waters. The waters rose higher and higher above the ground until all the highest mountains under the whole of heaven were submerged. The waters reached their peak fifteen cubits above the submerged mountains. And all living things that stirred on earth perished; birds, cattle, wild animals, all the creatures swarming over the earth, and all human beings. Everything with the least breath of life in its nostrils, everything on dry land, died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out, people, animals, creeping things and birds; they were wiped off the earth and only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. The waters maintained their level on earth for a hundred and fifty days.

Each generation added more sin —
                    the world was corrupted

                Social sin, today — abortion

                God gave us order

                Man keeps sinning

Genesis 9: 8-17

God spoke as follows to Noah and his sons, ‘I am now establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants to come, and with every living creature that was with you: birds, cattle and every wild animal with you; everything that came out of the ark, every living thing on earth. And I shall maintain my covenant with you: that never again shall all living things be destroyed by the waters of a flood, nor shall there ever again be a flood to devastate the earth.’

‘And this’, God said, ‘is the sign of the covenant which I now make between myself and you and every living creature with you for all ages to come: I now set my bow in the clouds and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I shall recall the covenant between myself and you and every living creature, in a word all living things, and never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all living things. When the bow is in the clouds I shall see it and call to mind the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth, that is, all living things.’

‘That’, God told Noah, ‘is the sign of the covenant I have established between myself and all living things on earth.’

                Abraham was blessed

                Those who imitate the faith
                    of Abraham are blessed —

Those who hurt Abraham are cursed.

                God promises to Abraham —
God tells him he will be the
                    father of many nations —

Around 1896 BC Abraham bears a son by Sarah
                    Abraham is tested
                    Isaac the son of Abraham
Esau and Jacob sons of Isaac
                        (twins)
                    After Rebekah's barrenness
                    Jacob's wife

Around 1747 BC Joseph born son of
                    Jacob and Rachel
                    (Jacob was 90)

Around 1745 BC Rachel dies giving birth to Benjamin
                    Joseph dies 1635

                    end of Genesis

                Aaron born around 1574 BC
                Moses born around 1571 BC

                Lord appears to
                    Moses in a burning bush
                    around 1491 BC

                Moses gets the 10 Commandments
                    around 1491 BC

The Ten Commandments

  1. I, the Lord, am your God. You shall not have other gods besides me.
  2. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
  3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
  4. Honor your father and your mother.
  5. You shall not kill.
  6. You shall not commit adultery.
  7. You shall not steal.
  8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
  10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Deuteronomy 4: 1, 5-9

And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observing them, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, is giving you.

Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe in the country of which you are going to take possession. Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Once they know what all these laws are, they will exclaim,  No other people is as wise and prudent as this great nation! And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we call to him? And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am laying down for you today?

'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or let them slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.

Joshua leads them to the Promised Land

Psalm 95: 1-2, 6-9

Come, let us cry out with joy to Yahweh,
acclaim the rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving,
acclaim him with music.

Come, let us bow low and do reverence;
kneel before Yahweh who made us!
For he is our God,
and we the people of his sheepfold,
the flock of his hand.

If only you would listen to him today!
Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,
as at the time of Massah in the desert,
when your ancestors challenged me,
put me to the test, and saw what I could do!

                Sing Song: Hosea

Hosea 14: 2-10

Israel, come back to Yahweh your God
your guilt was the cause of your downfall.
Provide yourself with words
and come back to Yahweh.
Say to him, ‘Take all guilt away
and give us what is good,
instead of bulls we will dedicate to you
    our lips.
Assyria cannot save us,
we will not ride horses any more,
or say, “Our God!”
    to our own handiwork,
for you are the one
    in whom orphans find compassion.’

I shall cure them of their disloyalty,
I shall love them with all my heart,
for my anger has turned away from them.
I shall fall like dew on Israel,
he will bloom like the lily
and thrust out roots
    like the cedar of Lebanon;
he will put out new shoots,
he will have the beauty of the olive tree
and the fragrance of Lebanon.
They will come back to live in my shade;
they will grow wheat again,
they will make the vine flourish,
their wine will be as famous as Lebanon’s.
What has Ephraim to do with idols
    any more
when I hear him and watch over him?
I am like an evergreen cypress,
you owe your fruitfulness to me.

Concluding admonition

Let the wise understand these words,
let the intelligent grasp their meaning,
for Yahweh’s ways are straight
and the upright will walk in them,
but sinners will stumble.

Mark 12: 28-34

One of the scribes who had listened to them debating appreciated that Jesus had given a good answer and put a further question to him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments? Jesus replied, ‘This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one, only Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. The scribe said to him, ‘Well spoken, Master; what you have said is true, that he is one and there is no other. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself, this is far more important than any burnt offering or sacrifice. Jesus, seeing how wisely he had spoken, said, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ And after that no one dared to question him any more.
