                Jesus we love You
Jesus You are truly present in the Eucharist
                Jesus You are above all
Jesus we are sorry for all our sins
Jesus we are sorry for the sins of the world —

                God is above our problems
                God is all powerful
                God is life

We live the resurrected life in our lives —
We die to our sinful ways
We want You to reign in the hearts of men —

                You are above all —
                You are our Ruler —
You are over all — our beloved God —

Adam and Eve disobeyed God —
We suffer with a wounded human nature
because of the sin of Adam and Eve —

We see the effects of original sin —

At the time of Noah God flooded the
earth because of the corruption —

We do not see the bad habits we may
                    have learned from our birth
parents — passed on to us —

We can still love our parents — we
recognize what they taught us and
made us do as rules that do not
                    work — Our parents weren't perfect —
we have hurt others, hurt God —
we are to pray for those we hurt
and try to grow to be more perfected
as our heavenly Father is perfect.

Jesus: I give to you such gifts — I come to lift
you up — I want you to repent —

                R. How can we reject sin when we
won't even admit our sins —

                We must recognize our sins
We ask God for forgiveness of our sins —
                We forgive others —
We operate in love — doing God's will —

Many have sins and they change —
God gives us His Body and Blood to feed
the life God gave us in baptism —

Jesus wants to heal us —
We must admit  our sins —
We must repent of our sins —

The 8 days of retreat are prayed
                    deeply for reparation for our
sins and the sins of the human race —

Dear God outpour Your grace as
                    we live ever more deeply
                    in You — spreading the
life of resurrection to all —

                Witnesses of Christ —
                Bearing the Light to all

                Rejecting the darkness —

                Praying for the priests, the
                    Church and the world

Prayer for Priests

Lord Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the Flock, we pray that in the great love and mercy of Your Sacred Heart You attend to all the needs of Your priest-shepherds throughout the world. We ask that You draw back to Your Heart all those priests who have seriously strayed from Your path, that You rekindle the desire for holiness in the hearts of those priests who have become lukewarm, and that You continue to give Your fervent priests the desire for the highest holiness. United with Your Heart and Mary's Heart, we ask that You take this petition to Your heavenly Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Dear God Bless us and help us to be holy —
help us to be instruments of the Light —
                    spreading the Good News —

Help us to walk in the footprints
of Jesus — to live in the
                    truth —

Dear Heavenly Father — we pray to
                    You united to Jesus in
the Holy Spirit — help us —

Jesus I put my trust in You
Jesus I love You so much
                Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
                Jesus, I love You —

2 Kings 19: 2-11, 14-21, 31-36

He sent Eliakim master of the palace, Shebnah the secretary and the elders of the priests, wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. They said to him, 'This is what Hezekiah says, "Today is a day of suffering, of punishment, of disgrace. Children come to birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth. May Yahweh your God hear the words of the cupbearer-in-chief whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to insult the living God, and may Yahweh your God punish the words he has heard. Offer your prayer for the remnant still remaining." '

King Hezekiah's ministers went to Isaiah, and Isaiah said to them, 'Say to your master, "Yahweh says this: Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard or the blasphemies which the king of Assyria's minions have uttered against me. Look, I am going to put a spirit in him and, on the strength of a rumour, he will go back to his own country, and in that country I shall make him fall by the sword." '

The cupbearer turned about and rejoined the king of Assyria, who was then attacking Libnah, as the cupbearer had learnt that the king had already left Lachish on hearing that Tirhakah king of Cush was on his way to attack him.

Sennacherib again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 'Tell Hezekiah king of Judah this, "Do not let your God on whom you are relying deceive you with the promise: Jerusalem will not fall into the king of Assyria's clutches. You have learnt by now what the kings of Assyria have done to all the other countries, devoting them to destruction. Are you likely to be saved?

Hezekiah took the letter from the messengers' hands and read it; he then went up to the Temple of Yahweh and spread it out before Yahweh. Hezekiah said this prayer in the presence of Yahweh, 'Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, enthroned on the winged creatures, you alone are God of all the kingdoms of the world, you made heaven and earth. Give ear, Yahweh, and listen; open your eyes, Yahweh, and see! Hear the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to insult the living God. It is true, Yahweh, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations, they have thrown their gods on the fire, for these were not gods but human artefacts — wood and stone — and hence they have destroyed them. But now, Yahweh our God, save us from his clutches, I beg you, and let all the kingdoms of the world know that you alone are God, Yahweh.'

Isaiah son of Amoz then sent the following message to Hezekiah, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I have heard the prayer which you have addressed to me about Sennacherib king of Assyria." Here is the pronouncement which Yahweh has made about him:

"She despises you, she scorns you,
    the virgin daughter of Zion;
she tosses her head at you,
    the daughter of Jerusalem!

for a remnant will issue from Jerusalem,
    and survivors from Mount Zion.
    Yahweh Sabaoth's jealous love
        will accomplish this.

"This, then, is what Yahweh says about the king of Assyria:

"He will not enter this city,
will shoot no arrow at it,
    confront it with no shield,
throw up no earthwork against it.

By the road by which he came,
        by that he will return;
he will not enter this city,
        declares Yahweh.
I shall protect this city and save it
    for my sake
and my servant David's sake." '

That same night the angel of Yahweh went out and struck down a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. In the early morning when it was time to get up, there they lay, so many corpses. Sennacherib struck camp and left; he returned home and stayed in Nineveh.

2 Samuel 12: 7-10, 13

Nathan then said to David, 'You are the man! Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I anointed you king of Israel, I saved you from Saul's clutches, I gave you your master's household and your master's wives into your arms, I gave you the House of Israel and the House of Judah; and, if this is still too little, I shall give you other things as well. Why did you show contempt for Yahweh, by doing what displeases him? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword, you took his wife to be your wife, causing his death by the sword of the Ammonites. For this, your household will never be free of the sword, since you showed contempt for me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite, to make her your wife."

David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against Yahweh." Nathan then said to David, "Yahweh, for his part, forgives your sin; you are not to die.

Psalm 32: 1-2, 5, 7, 11

How blessed are those whose offence is forgiven,
    whose sin blotted out.
How blessed are those to whom Yahweh imputes no guilt,
    whose spirit harbours no deceit.

I made my sin known to you,
    did not conceal my guilt.
I said, 'I shall confess
    my offence to Yahweh.'
And you, for your part, took away my guilt,
    forgave my sin.
Pause

You are a refuge for me,
    you guard me in trouble,
with songs of deliverance you surround me.
Pause

    Rejoice in Yahweh,
    exult all you upright,
shout for joy, you honest of heart.

We should thank God for forgiving our sins —
for the grace — He gives us that helps
                    us so we don't sin

Galatians 3: 26-29

for all of you are the children of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus, since every one of you that has been baptised has been clothed in Christ. There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither slave nor freeman, there can be neither male nor female — for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And simply by being Christ's, you are that progeny of Abraham, the heirs named in the promise.

Luke 9: 18-24

Now it happened that he was praying alone, and his disciples came to him and he put this question to them, 'Who do the crowds say I am?' And they answered, 'Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; others again one of the ancient prophets come back to life.' 'But you,' he said to them, 'who do you say I am?' It was Peter who spoke up. 'The Christ of God,' he said. But He gave them strict orders and charged them not to say this to anyone.

He said, 'The Son of man is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.'

Then, speaking to all, he said, 'If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross every day and follow me. Anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, will save it.

Oh God — thank You for forgiving our sins —
Oh God — thank You for loving us —
Oh God — help us to be holy
Oh God — give us your grace to admit
the truth to love You as You
                    deserve to be loved —

Psalm 68: 8-9

the earth rocked,                       Pause
the heavens pelted down rain at the presence of God,
at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

God, you rained down a shower of blessings,
when your heritage was weary you gave it strength.

John 20: 29

Jesus said to him:
You believe because you can see me.
Blessed are those who have not seen
        and yet believe.

Revelation 5: 9-10

They sang a new hymn:
You are worthy to take the scroll
and to break its seals,
because you were sacrificed,
    and with your blood
you bought people for God
of every race, language, people and nation
and made them a line of kings and priests for God,
to rule the world.

Oh God You are my light
Oh God You are my refuge
Oh God You are my Savior

HOMILY: (2 Sam 12: 7-10, 13; Gal 2:16, 19-21; Luke 7:36-8:3) I hope you will pardon me if I tell a couple of cute stories for Fathers’ Day.

There was a priest named O’Reilly who ran into Mrs. Donovan whom he had married to Mr. Donovan years before.  Fr. O’Reilly asked how they were doing and she said fine, except for a very sad part of their life.  They couldn’t have children.  Fr. O’Reilly said he was on his way to Rome and would light a candle for them so God would bless them with children.  Several years later, Fr. O’Reilly ran into Mrs. Donovan and asked how things were going and asked if they had any children yet.  She said yes, God blessed them with ten children, including three sets of twins.  Fr. O’Reilly said, “praise the Lord.”  And how is Mr. Donovan doing and where is he now.  She said, “he just left for Rome to blow out that darned candle.”

Someone wrote a story of why God created children (and in the process grandchildren).  Whenever your children are not perfect, take comfort in the fact that even the omnipotent God was not 100% successful with his children.  He made Adam and Eve, and one of the first things he said was “DON’T.”  “Don’t what?” Adam asked.  “Don’t eat the forbidden fruit!”  God said.  “Forbidden fruit!  We have forbidden fruit?  Hey Eve, we have forbidden fruit.”  “No way!”  “Yeah, for real.”  “Do NOT eat the fruit” God said.  “Why?”  “Because I am your father and I said so!”  God replied, wondering why he hadn’t stopped creation after making the elephants.  A few minutes later, God saw his children having an apple break and he wasn’t happy.  “Didn’t I tell you not to eat the fruit?”  God asked.  “Uh huh,” Adam replied.  “Then why did you?”  said the Father.  “I don’t know” said Eve.  “She started it!” said Adam.  “Did not!”  “Did too!” “DID NOT!”   Having had it with the two of them, God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own.  Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.  If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven’t taken it, don’t be too hard on yourself.  If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

Things to reflect on:

Grandchildren are God’s reward for not killing your own.

The main purpose of holding children’s parties is to remind yourself that there are children more awful than your own.

Advice for the day: Be nice to your kids.  They will choose your nursing home one day.

And finally if you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle.  “Take two aspirin” and “keep away from children.”

I hope that was not too irreverent.  Seriously, children are a wonderful gift and they are our future.   But sometimes they can be a challenge, so I admire all parents these days who are doing the best they can with their children. I especially wish all of our fathers a very blessed and happy father’s day.

I’ve said some of this before and if you’ve already heard it, please forgive me.  I had a wonderful father.  He was religious, he was intelligent, he was generous, he inspired his five children to work hard to use their gifts as best they could.  He worked hard to provide for all of us,  yet he had his faults.  He did not readily forgive people who offended him, he was a dictator at home (affectionately nicknamed by my friends “the czar”) and he was an alcoholic who at times did not hesitate to use his physical strength to keep law and order in the home.  And he was strong.  It’s been 27 years since he died.  For a long time I held a lot of resentment toward him, until one day the Lord relieved me of all my bad feelings.  Our Lord helped me see the kind of dysfunctional, alcoholic home my dad came from and I realized he achieved a lot with what he had to work with.  When my resentment was gone, I could respect him and appreciate him for who he was and for what he had been able to make of himself.   Sometimes we forget parents are human and they are the product of the environment they grew up in.  Our Lord also did another favor for me.  He taught me that instead of being angry about the past and blaming my parents for their faults, I should put my energy toward working on some of my own problems.  Having grown up in an alcoholic home, I realized I had much to learn about forgiveness and learn how to deal with conflict in constructive ways.  If we let Our Lord guide us, he will.  I have a lot of positive feelings for my dad for, in spite of his faults, he was generally a very good father. I am grateful for all the good things he did for me.

A lady (not from around here) came to me recently with some marriage problems.  One of her problems was that her husband had grown up in an alcoholic home. It had affected him significantly, but he was in denial (as many times alcoholics and their families are).  There are serious problems in today’s society where many fathers have abandoned their position of leadership in the family or they walk away from their responsibilities and aren’t there at all.  I read recently that the average father spends 37 seconds per day with his children according to a Cornell University study.  Husbands and fathers should not think they have to act like the czar, but they have responsibilities they share with their wives to love God, and each other and to teach their children how to live good lives.

As we think of fathers, we can’t forget the One who created all of us.  Of course the God we call Father has no gender for God does not have a physical body.  Only Jesus does.  However, the image of God as Father is a convenient and comfortable way of thinking of God for it was the way Jesus most often referred to God when he called him “abba”, an Aramaic word meaning “daddy.”  The late Johnny Hart, who drew the cartoon BC, occasionally indulged in poetry.  He wrote a poem for fathers’ day that you might enjoy:

Everybody don’t all have a father.
Some, there are, whose dads have passed along.
Then there’s some who couldn’t give less bother,
to family situations woebegone.
With dads you cannot just reach and ‘nab’ one,
but if for some reason you don’t have one,
there’s one on duty, all the time—up there!

Through our Mass today we seek to give love to our heavenly Father who loves us infinitely.  We ask his help for whatever we need. As always at Mass, we join with Jesus, the perfect human being and Son of God to offer our praise, our thanks, our whole selves to the One who has given us all that we have and hope to have.

July 31, 1994

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:

"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.

"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.

"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."

- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,
feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)

The China Church is over 140 years old

and we pray in there 24 hours a day.

It needs stucco and so does

the community building.

Can you please help us?
