What is the Shepherds of Christ all about?

Messenger:             Our mission is to help lead the people in the

Church into a deeper spousal union with God.

Revelation 21: 1-8

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride dressed for her husband. Then I heard a loud voice call from the throne, 'Look, here God lives among human beings. He will make his home among them; they will be his people, and he will be their God, God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes; there will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness or pain. The world of the past has gone.'

Then the One sitting on the throne spoke. 'Look, I am making the whole of creation new. Write this, "What I am saying is trustworthy and will come true."' Then he said to me, 'It has already happened. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give water from the well of life free to anybody who is thirsty; anyone who proves victorious will inherit these things; and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the legacy for cowards, for those who break their word, or worship obscenities, for murderers and the sexually immoral, and for sorcerers, worshippers of false gods or any other sort of liars, is the second death in the burning lake of sulphur.'

April 19, 2003 message continues

Messenger:             Many do not stay after communion and pray as Jesus
wants. Many do not spend time with Jesus before the
tabernacle. Jesus wants us to come and visit with Him and
                            be so close to Him.

Just because people don't do it, it doesn't mean
its what God wants. Lots of people work all day Sunday
who do not have to work and they miss Mass, some just
engage in sports and miss Mass. God wants us to go to
Mass on Sunday and honor Him especially on Sunday.

A lot of people argue it is okay to kill the baby
of the womb. There are many engaging in sex outside
of marriage, there are promiscuous movies, newspapers
                            and magazines.

Our measuring stick is not the people, our
measuring stick is "what is God's will for us?"

My body got injured in the wreck, but my love of
God and others never changed, my desire for communion,
my love for the Mass, my commitment to pray for the priests
and the Church, My deep love will go on with me when
I die. I know my mom died when I was five, Fr. Carter
died, my dad died, their bodies were buried

I know they went on and live very deeply united to God

I still have that deep connection to them and to all the
                            saints.

I am so connected to Mary and Jesus, I never feel
alone. I know God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
                            live in me.

You know a person with cancer knows, they watch
their body deteriorate because of the cancer and yet
many times they grow so deeply in their union with
God, Fr. Willig, Fr. Carter, Fr. Jack
there seems to be
lots of good priests dying quickly of cancer.

My son's 18 year old friend died of cancer. He tried
everything, I have seen people in the casket after
cancer look so thin and awful. My son's friend
wrote the most beautiful music and poems during
                            his bout with cancer
far beyond any 18 year
old. One time he went to Mary's image site.

Well Mary is our mother and she loves us so much
and she is appearing to tell her children how
they can't offend God any longer. The Father has
permitted her to appear over 6 years.

Oh Lights of heaven, shine on the people of this
                            earth here below.

Here is a holy man with cancer, the cancer never
effected his love and his heart and his vision, but
                            his body died.

Excerpt from Priestly Newsletter 1998 - ISSUE FOUR

Shortly before he was to die from cancer, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin left us these inspiring words about peace: "It is the first day of November, and fall is giving way to winter. Soon the trees will lose the vibrant colors of their leaves and snow will cover the ground. The earth will shut down, and people will race to and from their destinations bundled up for warmth. Chicago winters are harsh. It is a time of dying.

"But we know that spring will soon come with all its new life and wonder.

"It is quite clear that I will not be alive in the spring. But I will soon experience new life in a different way...

"What I would like to leave behind is a simple prayer that each of you may find what I have foundGod's special gift to us all: the gift of peace. When we are at peace, we find the freedom to be most fully who we are, even in the worst of times. We let go of what is non-essential and embrace what is essential. We empty ourselves so that God may more fully work within us. And we become instruments in the hands of the Lord."

Messenger:             I feel so foolish to have not seen the signs the last
year of Fr. Carter's life. Jesus kept writing all about
death the summer of 2000. Here is a picture of Fr. Carter
                            on June 12, 2000 with Jerry's dad

Messenger:         He looked awful before that picture August 8, 2000
in the restaurant, I thought it was Fr. Carter's diabetes
and I said crying "Oh Father you could die", I
was trying to get him to get better, like he had
                            control over it.

It kind of sounds like Peter telling Jesus
not to do what would lead to His death. It was
a hard road. Father coughed all the time and he
was so sick at Mass sometimes he sat
I
miss him here with us, but I know he is
helping us in heaven. He always gave me a card
                            for Easter, Christmas, birthdays
a lot were in
purple envelopes, when I get a card now, I remember
all he gave me. He always made everything he wrote
count. Only a few powerful lines and he ended with
Love in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Here is a little note he wrote to everyone on
my birthday, the anniversary of when he entered.

Messenger:             Well we worked all of lent on this priestly mailing,
I never thought Holy Week would end with someone
                            bringing me communion.

We take the Mass for granted so very much.
The Mass is such a gift. I know Jesus told Fr. Carter
he would get public messages Holy Saturday
                            night 1994
then it all started He had already
                            discerned Blue Book I.

Here is the vision I had on Holy Saturday 1996.
It was one of three great visions.

Excerpt from May 11, 1996 rosary

Another vision on Holy Saturday: the light was on the whole wall of the church at Holy Saturday Mass, and it rained on the flowers around the statue of the risen Jesus, which came alive. And the light went up and surrounded St. Joseph, and the Child Jesus looked as if He was coming out from his arms. And surrounded by me, were many young people that Jesus told me would be the leaders into this new era where there will be the reign of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Messenger:             Please view the videos on the webtv
January 5, 2003 and April 17, 1994, they are like
matched book ends. The video April 17, 1994
was a couple of weeks after Fr. Carter's Holy
                            Saturday message.

The sun has shown from the Movement.
Fr. Carter sent the Newsletter to all the priests
in the United States for over 6 years and we were
praying for them too. He sent it to many foreign
countries and Spanish speaking priests for
a total of 75,000 priests a lot of the time.

Lots of people have prayed daily at 6:20
for a long time, praying for the priests, the
                            Church and the world.

The Blue Books were printed January 3, 2003.

Messenger:             I gave all I could to this because Jesus said to
and then again they came later and said we owed
them $2000 in shipping or something. Money
is really tight, but especially because of this
mailing. We need to give Sycamore Printing
the money for the Spirituality Handbooks. The
new ones were beautiful, but expensive and we
                            have all our regular bills.

Here is what I see, when I introduced the
Blue Books April 17, 1994 the sun pulsated
                            over the old seminary
this is on the internet
as I talk about the Eucharist and God's Blue
Book, sweet love letters from Jesus.

Then on January 3, 2003 at the direction of Our Lord
                            30,000 Blue Books are printed
look at the
blue of the water as we leave where they were printed.

BARE BABY, BARE BABY then He
                            gave me this message.

Message of January 5, 1997

Jesus speaks:  Open yourself, Oh Jerusalem,
                        your time is come
                        you will be a light
                        to the people in darkness,
many will walk whence you come
and the earth will be shakened
and the light will come across a dark sky
                        and enlighten their minds.

                    Oh stiff-necked people,
you are so stiff in your ways,
                let the spirit envelope you
and lead you on your way.

                    A country of stiffs,
a people of planning and prodding,
                of deliberating and wondering—
                you lack faith, Jerusalem,
                you lack faith in God.

Oh walk naked into the cold night,
you are cold in your hearts
                and naked in your clothing—
                I cloth you with glory,
I light your face with light,
but you turn your cheeks to the darkness
and stay stiff-necked in your hearts.
                Oh cold and dark hearts,
reach for the light that you may know
the glory that awaits the sinners
                and enlightens their minds.

Messenger:            And I remember this message January 5, 1995
I received and was published, about the Shepherds
of Christ and the Holy Spirit Center. They totally
                            ignored this message.

Message given
January 5, 1995 - 6:45 a.m.

Jesus speaks: My dear child,
I want you to see the big picture. My messages are not for two or three. My messages are for all souls. Souls are at stake. You contain the mighty medicine to draw men's hearts back to My burning love. I am Jesus. Put everything aside and focus only on Me talking to you.

The world is hurting. Men's hearts are so cold. They do not see beyond themselves. They do not see that God is with them this day. Little one, you were created to know, love and serve God. God must be first in your life. Many in your country have denied the existence of God. The batting of an eye, the dropping of a pin, and your life is over.

See with the eyes of God. See with the vision of God. God is eternal, God sees time as one. You do not see because you do not pray for grace.

You see with limited vision. You think with a human mind. You use a human mind to judge the things of God. I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I came to this world to lead all men to heaven. I come to you this day. Do you think God comes to talk to a few? I came to lead all souls to everlasting happiness.

Pray for vision. I see not a little town, I see all men, yet, I love each soul so uniquely. You do not understand the mind of God. You do not see as I see. I ask you to give My love to all. You see a few and love a few. You are one body, all men are your brothers. I came to give My Life to all men.

You must pray for vision and grace to do the will of the Father. My plan is unfolding and it depends on you. One person fixed on the love of God can radiate such might and power.

You cannot light the city without My power. My power I pour out to you in the Eucharist. My power I pour out to you when you sit in front of My tabernacle. You cannot do it without My might, My power. I am the Power, I am your All. You see yourself as controlling so many things and being so strong. Your power comes from Me. To do the work I am calling you to, you must have the might of God. You see yourself with a little area and a little job. I am calling you to love all. I am calling you to radiate love. I am calling you to light up the world with My love. I am calling you to make a difference in the lives of so many souls. Your love given through Me will change so many hearts.

Pray to the Spirit to transform your hearts to be more and more like Mine. Go to Mary and unite with Our Hearts. The more you unite to Our Hearts, the more the Spirit pours out His grace to transform your hearts. You do not ask for that life I want to give you. My Life, My grace, My vision, I pour out to you in the Eucharist. Oh, children, you are so blind. I speak to you, your Mother comes and appears and you see only in front of your face.

I come to you this day to deliver this message. Open your hearts to My love. Come to Me at Mass and in Communion with this open heart to receive divine love and divine life. Sit in front of Me in the tabernacle. I beg you. Times are coming when the things you hold onto so tightly will wither in front of your faces.

You are one body in Christ. See the big picture. See the world. See heaven. See all souls living and dead. See the Church as one. See, My children. You in your ways hold onto such little things. You see only in front of your faces.

I call, I knock, My Mother appears and calls each of you here this day. You are soldiers in My army to lead souls to My love. I need strong soldiers. I am fortifying you with My Body and Blood. I give to you this day in the Eucharist. You will radiate with the love of God when you turn your hearts to the Eucharist. I am present no less than the day I hung on the cross. You look for little signs and Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is here. I am here in My Divinity and Humanity in the Eucharist as present as the day I died on the cross, as the day I walked on Calvary, as the day I was born in Bethlehem. I wait in the tabernacle to fortify you with your supplies to spread My love. You do not see because you do not come for your supplies.

Please take Me seriously. Time is short. You need to turn to My Eucharistic Heart. Come to this Center and pray. Come to My tabernacle. Attend Mass and Communion.

Be with Me after Communion. How eagerly I wait to be with you. Pray the rosary with the meditations I have given you. Be there in the lives of Jesus and Mary as you pray the rosary. Pray to the Spirit. All day pray to the Spirit to fill you with the fire of His love. Pray all day for Him to transform you more and more into My image. Pray all day to be soldiers in My army spreading My love to this world. I call you this day. Will you answer Me?

Lament of a Levite in exile

For the choirmaster Poem Of the sons of Korah

                        As a deer yearns
                            for running streams,
                        so I yearn
                            for you, my God.

I thirst for God,
    the living God;
when shall I go to see
    the face of God?

I have no food but tears
    day and night,
as all day long I am taunted,
    ‘Where is your God?’

This I remember
as I pour out my heart,
how I used to pass under the roof of the Most High
used to go to the house of God,
among cries of joy and praise,
    the sound of the feast.

Why be so downcast,
     why all these sighs?
Hope in God! I will praise him still,
     my Saviour, my God.

When I am downcast
    I think of you:
from the land of Jordan and Hermon,
I think of you, humble mountain.
Deep is calling to deep
by the roar of your cataracts,
all your waves and breakers
    have rolled over me.

In the daytime God sends his faithful love,
    and even at night;
the song it inspires in me
is a prayer to my living God.

I shall say to God, my rock,
    ‘Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go around in mourning,
    harrassed by the enemy?’

With death in my bones,
    my enemies taunt me,
all day long they ask me,
‘Where is your God?’

Why so downcast,
    why all these sighs?
Hope in God! I will praise him still,
    my Saviour, my God.

43

Judge me, God, defend my cause
    against a people who have no faithful love;
from those who are treacherous and unjust,
    rescue me.

For you are the God of my strength;
    why abandon me?
Why must I go around in mourning,
    harrassed by the enemy?

Send out your light and your truth;
    they shall be my guide,
to lead me to your holy mountain
to the place where you dwell.

Then I shall go to the altar of God,
to the God of my joy.
I will rejoice and praise you on the harp,
    O God, my God.

Why so downcast,
    why all these sighs?
Hope in God! I will praise him still,
    my Saviour, my God.

  Isaiah 58: 8

Then your light will blaze out
    like the dawn
and your wound be quickly healed over.
Saving justice will go ahead of you
and Yahweh’s glory come behind you.

Isaiah 60: 1-5

Arise, shine out,
    for your light has come,
and the glory of Yahweh has risen on you.
Look! though night still covers the earth
and darkness the peoples,
on you Yahweh is rising
and over you his glory can be seen.
The nations will come to your light
and kings to your dawning brightness.
Lift up your eyes and look around:
all are assembling
    and coming towards you,
your sons coming from far away
and your daughters
    being carried on the hip.
At this sight you will grow radiant,
your heart will throb and dilate,
since the riches of the sea will flow to you,
the wealth of the nations come to you;

Matthew 5: 13-16

Salt for the earth and light for the world

‘You are salt for the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled under people’s feet.

‘You are light for the world. A city built on a hill–top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp–stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in people’s sight, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven.

John 8: 12

Jesus, the light of the world

When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said:

    I am the light of the world;
    anyone who follows me
will not be walking in the dark,
but will have the light of life.

John 12: 44-46

        Jesus declared publicly:

    Whoever believes in me
    believes not in me
but in the one who sent me,
    and whoever sees me,
sees the one who sent me.
I have come into the world as light,
to prevent anyone who believes in me
from staying in the dark any more.

Ephesians 5: 8

You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,

1 John 1: 5-10

I: TO WALK IN THE LIGHT

This is what we have heard from him and are declaring to you:
God is light,
and there is no darkness in him at all.
If we say that we share in God’s life
while we are living in darkness,
we are lying,
because we are not living the truth.
But if we live in light,
as he is in light,
we have a share in another’s life,
and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
cleanses us from all sin.

First condition: to break with sin

If we say, ‘We have no sin,’
we are deceiving ourselves,
and truth has no place in us;
if we acknowledge our sins,
he is trustworthy and upright,
so that he will forgive our sins
and will cleanse us from all evil.
If we say, ‘We have never sinned,’
we make him a liar,
and his word has no place in us.

My covenant I have given to you.

Genesis 9: 11-17

And I shall maintain my covenant with you: that never again shall all living things be destroyed by the waters of a flood, nor shall there ever again be a flood to devastate the earth.’

‘And this’, God said, ‘is the sign of the covenant which I now make between myself and you and every living creature with you for all ages to come: I now set my bow in the clouds and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I shall recall the covenant between myself and you and every living creature, in a word all living things, and never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all living things. When the bow is in the clouds I shall see it and call to mind the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth, that is, all living things.’ ‘That’, God told Noah, ‘is the sign of the covenant I have established between myself and all living things on earth.’

The Birth of the Full Ministries
of the Shepherds of Christ

"I wish to share with you part of a message which Jesus gave us on October 13, 1994. The message tells us about the expansion of the Shepherds of Christ movement:

'My beloved priest-companion, today I come to you with another mission. I am asking you to establish Shepherds of Christ Ministries. At My request you have already begun the priestly newsletter, "Shepherds of Christ", and the prayer chapters, Shepherds of Christ Associates...

'I am giving you this message on this day, the 77th Anniversary of the Great Apparition at Fatima, because of the close connection between the Shepherds of Christ movement and the Fatima message. The Fatima message is centered in devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart, especially in consecration to Our Hearts. Shepherds of Christ Ministries is also centered in devotion to Our Hearts. I will use Shepherds of Christ Ministries as a great instrument in helping to bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. When this occurs, My Church and the world will be experiencing the great era of peace promised by My Mother at Fatima.

'Today, then, October 13, 1994, the 77th Anniversary of the Great Apparition at Fatima, marks the birth of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. I pour forth the great love of My Sacred Heart to all. I am Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock.'

Apostles of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus

My dear fellow Associate Members,

Jesus is calling special apostles to join a new division of the Shepherds of Christ Movement. Here is a message from Jesus given to Father Carter:

My beloved priest-companion, I am requesting that a new prayer movement be started under the direction of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. I am asking for volunteers who are willing to pray before the Blessed Sacrament for one hour, twice-weekly. Members of the Shepherds of Christ prayer chapters, as well as others, are to be invited to join this movement.

These apostles are to pray for the intentions I am giving you. For part of the hour they are to use the prayers of the Shepherds of Christ Associates Handbook. They may spend the rest of the hour as they so choose.

I will use this new prayer movement within My Shepherds of Christ Ministries in a powerful way to help in the renewal of My Church and the world. I will give great graces to those who join this movement. The name, Apostles of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, is to be given to this movement.

I am inviting My beloved Rita Ring to be coordinator for this activity.

I pour out the great love of My Sacred Heart to all. I am Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock.

This is indeed a special calling for us to unite in one heart with His Eucharistic Heart and pray for the following intentions:

  1. For the spread of the devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary culminating in the reign of the Sacred Heart and the triumph of the Immaculate Heart.
  2. For the Pope.
  3. For all bishops of the world.
  4. For all priests.
  5. For all sisters and brothers in the religious life.
  6. For all members of the Shepherds of Christ Movement, and for the spread of this movement to the world.
  7. For all members of the Catholic Church.
  8. For all members of the human family.
  9. For all souls in purgatory.

Very carefully discerned by Fr. Carter

Messenger:  I came to All Saints Church before a beautiful Monstrance of gold that contained Our beloved Savior. He was adorned in light, the altar beneath shone with the brightest light and the cross behind was entirely silhouetted with the same celestial light. I was overwhelmed with the presence of God and cried deeply from the awe of it all.

To be so aware of the Almighty God truly present in His splendor and glory—to know the presence of God, to see the glistening of the gold and the light and reflection of the cross behind Him—my beauteous love—words do not exist to describe the rapture of a heavenly embrace! I cry because of the immense awe within my being to know Him. God truly present in His majesty and glory and oh, God, I behold the presence of a heavenly court. You opened wide the heavens and lifted up the veil and I knew You in Your splendor and glory. I behold God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

"I am the Way, the Truth and the Life." He is the Almighty God. He shows us the celestial lights with which He will light this earth. Many must surrender their hearts to His Heart and Mary's heart. It is in surrendering, the Spirit will move in the hearts of men and the light of God will shine on the darkened earth. Not with a light that you comprehend, but a light that is divinely granted—a light beyond all lights, a vision beyond all visions. It takes the surrender of minds and hearts to God. The Spirit cannot move in us when we are in control. Surrender and give Him our heart and He will make us fishers of men.

We are His apostles in the Shepherds of Christ Movement. He is sending us out into the world to light the hearts with His burning love. We are chosen by Him and He is giving us abundant graces to grow in our union with Him. He will light this world with His burning love. Our hearts must be open. We must surrender and let go and reach beyond the senses, reach with our hearts. Pray for faith, pray for the vision of God.

Note:  I cried all through this writing, having the presence of God and being in great ecstasy to behold Him. May God touch your heart and may His Spirit move within you. May you be filled with the grace of God to surrender and let Him accomplish a great work within you.

And I was filled on high with His miraculous light and He reached down and spoke within me. I was filled as never before and knew the presence of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Note:  As I finished, the bells at All Saints Church rang at 9:00 A.M. As I began to experience the immense splendor, the bells of 8:00 rang. Words do not express anything that I saw or experienced or know from this ecstasy. This was the greatest and the first of three visions, which defined clearly to me our role in the Shepherds of Christ Movement. Jesus defines clearly the role of Fr. Carter in this great mission given to him by the Father.

For Fr. Carter from Jesus:

Jesus speaks:  To him who has eyes to see, they will see - not with earthly vision, but with the eyes of faith, and to him who has ears to hear, he will hear with the fluttering of the Spirit moving within him.

I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I am the Almighty God. I say to the rocks to fall and they fall and to the grass, grow, and it grows, and to the sun, shine, and it shines. I give to you My love in these letters. Filled with My love, you will conquer this earth, not with weapons and powder or force, but with fires of My love. The fire will wipe out the hatred in the cold hearts and the earth will be covered with My celestial light. The earth will rock and I will appear in the heavens adorned in power and glory and the contrite hearts will be saved. I came to separate the sheep from the goats, the light from the darkness. I come and no one pays Me heed.

To you, My beloved son, Father Carter, I have sent you on a mission to spread this fire that will cover this earth. The hearts of men will turn from their sick and desolate ways to hearts gentle as a little lamb.

There will be one flock and one Shepherd and My staff will rule over all. Hearts consecrated to Our Hearts will lead the light across the earth. This light will be a light of intense brightness, brighter and hotter than any light from a flame. It will be the fire of God's love. The Spirit will move in the hearts of all consecrated to My Heart, and you will know how fire truly spreads, for the love of God is a fire. It is vibrant. It is encompassing. It is smoldering, burning deep within and speedily spreading on the outside. No fire on this earth can ever describe the burning embers that burn from the Sacred Heart of Jesus. No fire burns like the fires coming from My Heart and hearts filled with the love from the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

I have written your name, Fr. Carter, in My Heart, never ever to be blotted out and this earth will be renewed with the fire of God's love through you. You are My beloved priest-son, forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. Most holy and most sacred are your hands that consecrate the Host and write My precious newsletter for My beloved priest-sons. You are never unguarded. You are held within the deepest chamber of My Heart, and you will spread My love to the priest-sons of this earth.

I am Jesus. You will spread My love to all souls on this earth. I love you with the tenderest burning love. I am Jesus, your beloved Savior.

Priestly Ministry and Priestly Holiness

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons the sheep and runs away as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep; this is because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep. (Jn 10:11-151)

Yes, the Good Shepherd has laid down His life for us, His flock. From His pierced side, the Church was born. At the heart of the Church’s life is the priesthood. The Church, to such a great degree, depends upon her ministerial priesthood. Indeed, priests have been given a great privilege and a great responsibility. Included in the priest’s accepting the responsibility connected with his role in the Church is his obligation to strive for ever greater holiness in Christ. As we can see by the writings which follow, there is a most intimate connection between the fruitfulness of the priest’s ministry and his personal holiness.

  • Vatican II tells us: "Priestly holiness itself contributes very greatly to a fruitful fulfillment of the priestly ministry. True, the grace of God can complete the work of salvation even through unworthy ministers. Yet ordinarily God desires to manifest His wonders through those who have been made particularly docile to the impulse and guidance of the Holy Spirit...

"This most holy Synod desires to achieve its pastoral goals of renewal within the Church, of the spread of the gospel throughout the world, and of dialogue with the modern world. Therefore it fervently exhorts all priests to use the appropriate means endorsed by the Church as they ever strive for that greater sanctity which will make them increasingly useful instruments in the service of all of God’s People." 2

What Vatican II puts before seminarians regarding spiritual formation can also obviously be implemented by priests: "Spiritual formation should be closely linked with doctrinal and pastoral training. Especially with the help of the spiritual director, such formation should help seminarians learn to live in familiar and constant companionship with the Father, through Jesus Christ His Son, in the Holy Spirit. By sacred ordination they will be molded in the likeness of Christ the Priest. As friends they should be used to loyal association with Him through a profound identification of their whole lives with His. They should live His paschal mystery in such a way that they know how to initiate into it the people entrusted to them. They should be taught to look for Christ in many places: in faithful meditation on God’s word, in active communion with the most holy mysteries of the Church, especially in the Eucharist and the divine Office, in the bishop who sends them, and in the people to whom they are sent, especially the poor, the young, the sick, the sinful and the unbelieving. With the trust of a son, they should love and honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was given as a mother to His disciple by Christ Jesus as He hung dying on the cross." 3

  • Pope John Paul II builds upon the teaching of Vatican II: "There can be no doubt that the exercise of the priestly ministry, especially in the celebration of the sacraments, receives its saving effects from the action of Christ himself who becomes present in the sacraments. But so as to emphasize the gratuitous nature of salvation which makes a person both ‘saved’ and a ‘savior’ -- always and only in Christ -- God’s plan has ordained that the efficacy of the exercise of the ministry is also conditioned by a greater or lesser human receptivity and participation. In particular, the greater or lesser degree of the holiness of the minister has a real effect on the proclamation of the word, the celebration of the sacraments and the leadership of the community in charity." 4

  • The following words of Fr. M. Raymond, O.C.S.O., are closely connected with what has gone before. His words emphasize the great importance regarding personal holiness and one’s participation in the Mass: "Mass, insomuch as it is Christ’s offering, is not only always acceptable to God, but is of infinite value as well.

But, inasmuch as it is your offering and mine, and that of every other member of the Mystical Body ... we can limit the effectiveness of God’s great Act of Love; we finite beings can set bounds to the veritable flood of God-life made possible by the Infinite Son of the Infinite Father." 5

Yes, the effectiveness of each Mass, which makes the sacrifice of Calvary sacramentally present, depends in part on the holiness of the entire Church offering it with Christ to the Father in the Holy Spirit, including the holiness of the individual priest offering and the holiness of his participating congregation.

  • Fr. Maurice de la Taille, S.J., formerly professor of theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and a universally recognized authority on the Mass, also points out the great importance of personal holiness in the Church relative to the effectiveness of the Eucharistic sacrifice: "It is, then, of the greatest importance that there should be in the Church many holy, many very holy persons. Devout people, men and women, who should be urged by every means to higher sanctity, so that through them the value of our Masses may be increased and the tireless voice of the Blood of Christ, crying from the earth, may ring with greater clearness and insistence in the ears of God. His Blood cries on the altars of the Church, but, since it cries through us, it follows that the warmer the heart, the purer the lips, the more clearly will its cry be heard at the Throne of God. Would you wish to know why for so many years after the first Pentecost the Gospel was so marvelously propagated, why there was so much sanctity amongst the Christian people; why such purity in heart and mind, such charity, the sum of all perfection? You will find the answer when you recall that in those times the Mother of God was still on earth giving her precious aid in all the Masses celebrated by the Church, and you will cease to wonder that never since has there been such expansion of Christianity, and such spiritual progress." 6

If all, then, have a responsibility to grow in holiness in order to render the Mass more efficacious, the priest has a special duty to do so. His goal must always be to grow in holiness -- to grow in union with Christ the Priest, this Christ Who leads us to the Father in the Holy Spirit with Mary at our side.

  • As just stated, the life of holiness, the spiritual life, centers in one’s love-union with Christ. The fruitfulness of the priest’s ministry depends on his union with Jesus. St. John beautifully and powerfully states this truth:

John 15:1-5

I am the true vine,
and my Father is the vinedresser.
Every branch in me that bears no fruit
he cuts away,
and every branch that does bear fruit
    he prunes
to make it bear even more.
You are clean already,
by means of the word
that I have spoken to you.
Remain in me, as I in you.
As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself,
unless it remains part of the vine,
neither can you unless you remain in me.
I am the vine,
you are the branches.
Whoever remains in me, with me in him,
bears fruit in plenty;
for cut off from me you can do nothing.

  • To grow in holiness, to advance in the spiritual life, requires a growth in surrender to Christ. Growth in holiness means allowing Jesus to possess us more and more. The more He possesses us, the more He can use us as instruments in the work of the kingdom. The more the Savior possesses us, the more fruitful our ministry. The summit of holiness for all Christians, and in a special way for the priest who is configured to Christ in a unique way through the sacrament of Holy Orders, is succinctly and movingly stated by St. Paul: "I have been crucified with Christ, and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject to the limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me." (Ga 2:19-20)

Excerpt from Newsletter 1998 Issue 5

The fact that Mary is our Mother, the fact that she has such a powerful role to play in our salvation in no way detracts from the mediatorship of Christ. Vatican II states: "The maternal duty of Mary toward men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power. For all the saving influences of the Blessed Virgin on men originate, not from some inner necessity, but from the divine pleasure. They flow forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rest on His mediation, depend entirely on it, and draw all their power from it. In no way do they impede the immediate union of the faithful with Christ. Rather, they foster this union." 3

In her loving, maternal role, Mary cooperates with the Holy Spirit in forming Christ in us. Pope John Paul II tells us: "The Church knows that 'all the saving influences of the Blessed Virgin on mankind originate... from the divine pleasure...' This saving influence is sustained by the Holy Spirit, Who, just as He overshadowed the Virgin Mary when he began in her the divine motherhood, in a similar way constantly sustains her solicitude for the brothers and sisters of her Son." 4

Mary, our Mother is ever with us, guiding us, teaching us, caring for us, protecting us, loving us. With her maternal assistance we go to the Father through and with Christ in the Holy Spirit.

Mary nourishes our growth in Christ with a very tender and specialized love for each of us. She regards each of us as a precious, unique individual. John Paul II again speaks to us: "Of the essence of motherhood is the fact that it concerns the person. Motherhood always establishes a unique and unrepeatable relationship between two people: between mother and child and between child and mother. Even when the same woman is the mother of many children, her personal relationship with each one of them is of the very essence of motherhood. For each child is generated in a unique and unrepeatable way, and this is true both for the mother and for the child." 5

Exodus 12: 37-42

Israel’s departure

The Israelites left Rameses for Succoth, about six hundred thousand on the march—men, that is, not counting their families. A mixed crowd of people went with them, and flocks and herds, quantities of livestock. And with the dough which they had brought from Egypt they baked unleavened cakes, because the dough had not risen, since they had been driven out of Egypt without time to linger or to prepare food for themselves. The time that the Israelites spent in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. And on the very day the four hundred and thirty years ended, all Yahweh’s armies left Egypt. The night when Yahweh kept vigil to bring them out of Egypt must be kept as a vigil in honour of Yahweh by all Israelites, for all generations.

Psalm 136: 1, 10-15, 23-24

Give thanks to Yahweh for he is good,
for his faithful love endures for ever.

He struck down the first–born of Egypt,
for his faithful love endures for ever.
He brought Israel out from among them,
for his faithful love endures for ever.
With mighty hand and outstretched arm,
for his faithful love endures for ever.

He split the Sea of Reeds in two,
for his faithful love endures for ever.
Let Israel pass through the middle,
or his faithful love endures for ever.
And drowned Pharaoh and all his army,
for his faithful love endures for ever.

He kept us in mind when we were humbled,
for his faithful love endures for ever.
And rescued us from our enemies,
for his faithful love endures for ever.

Exodus 14: 5-18

The Egyptians pursue the Israelites

When Pharaoh king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials changed their attitude towards the people. ‘What have we done,’ they said, ‘allowing Israel to leave our service?’ So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and set out with his troops, taking six hundred of the best chariots and all the other chariots in Egypt, with officers in each. Yahweh made Pharaoh king of Egypt stubborn, and he gave chase to the Israelites. The Israelites marched confidently away, but the Egyptians, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army, gave chase and caught up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea near Pi–Hahiroth, facing Baal–Zephon. As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up—and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them! The Israelites were terrified and cried out to Yahweh for help. To Moses they said, ‘Was it for lack of graves in Egypt, that you had to lead us out to die in the desert? What was the point of bringing us out of Egypt? Did we not tell you as much in Egypt? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for the Egyptians! We prefer to work for the Egyptians than to die in the desert!’ Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid! Stand firm, and you will see what Yahweh will do to rescue you today: the Egyptians you see today you will never see again. Yahweh will do the fighting for you; all you need to do is to keep calm.’

The miracle of the sea

Yahweh then said to Moses, ‘Why cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to march on. Your part is to raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the Israelites can walk through the sea on dry ground, while I, for my part, shall make the Egyptians so stubborn that they will follow them, and I shall win glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and all his army, chariots and horsemen. And when I have won glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen, the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh.’

Exodus 15: 1-6

Song of victory

It was then that Moses and the Israelites sang this song in Yahweh’s honour:

    I shall sing to Yahweh,
for he has covered himself in glory,
        horse and rider
he has thrown into the sea.
Yah is my strength and my song,
to him I owe my deliverance.
He is my God and I shall praise him,
my father’s God and I shall extol him.
    Yahweh is a warrior;
    Yahweh is his name.

    Pharaoh’s chariots and army
he has hurled into the sea
    the pick of his officers
have been drowned in the Sea of Reeds.
    The ocean has closed over them;
they have sunk to the bottom like a stone.
    Your right hand, Yahweh,
        wins glory by its strength,
    your right hand, Yahweh,
        shatters your foes,

Micah 6: 1-4, 6-8

Yahweh’s case against Israel

Now listen to what Yahweh says:
‘Stand up, state your case
    to the mountains
and let the hills hear
    what you have to say!’
Listen, mountains,
to the case as Yahweh puts it,
give ear, you foundations of the earth,
for Yahweh has a case against his people
and he will argue it with Israel.
‘My people, what have I done to you,
how have I made you tired of me?
    Answer me!
For I brought you up from Egypt,
I ransomed you
    from the place of slave–labour
and sent Moses, Aaron and Miriam
to lead you.

‘With what shall I enter
    Yahweh’s presence
and bow down before God All–high?
Shall I enter with burnt offerings,
with calves one year old?
Will he be pleased with rams
    by the thousand,
with ten thousand streams of oil?
Shall I offer my eldest son
    for my wrong–doing,
the child of my own body for my sin?

‘You have already been told what is right
and what Yahweh wants of you.
Only this, to do what is right,
to love loyalty
and to walk humbly with your God.’

Psalm 55: 5-6

fear and trembling overwhelm me,
    and shuddering grips me.

And I say,
‘Who will give me wings like a dove,
to fly away and find rest?’
