Feast of the Holy Trinity

Proverbs 8: 22-31

‘Yahweh created me, first–fruits of his fashioning,
before the oldest of his works.
From everlasting, I was firmly set,
from the beginning, before the earth came into being.
The deep was not, when I was born,
nor were the springs with their abounding waters.
Before the mountains were settled,
    before the hills, I came to birth;
before he had made the earth, the countryside,
and the first elements of the world.
When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there,
when he drew a circle on the surface of the deep,
when he thickened the clouds above,
when the sources of the deep began to swell,
when he assigned the sea its boundaries
—and the waters will not encroach on the shore–
when he traced the foundations of the earth,
I was beside the master craftsman,
    delighting him day after day,
ever at play in his presence,
at play everywhere on his earth,
delighting to be with the children of men.

Romans  5: 1-5

So then, now that we have been justified by faith, we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; it is through him, by faith, that we have been admitted into God’s favour in which we are living, and look forward exultantly to God’s glory. Not only that; let us exult, too, in our hardships, understanding that hardship develops perseverance, and perseverance develops a tested character, something that gives us hope, and a hope which will not let us down, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

John 16: 12-15

I still have many things to say to you
but they would be too much for you
    to bear now.
However, when the Spirit of truth comes
he will lead you to the complete truth,
since he will not be speaking
    of his own accord,
but will say only what he has been told;
and he will reveal to you
    the things to come.
He will glorify me,
since all he reveals to you
will be taken from what is mine.
Everything the Father has is mine;
that is why I said:
all he reveals to you
will be taken from what is mine.

Feast of the Holy Trinity

June 3, 2007

INTRODUCTION: There are a number of books in the Old Testament which are called wisdom books. Topics range from very philosophical, such as understanding the meaning of life or the meaning of suffering to very practical suggestions as to how to raise children or how to handle your money. Our first reading comes from one of the books in the wisdom tradition: the book of Proverbs.  Wisdom is personified, and in today’s first reading she is described as existing before creation.  This personification of Wisdom is a kind of vague foreshadowing of the Trinity.  Of course, the Old Testament knew nothing of the Trinity, but what is said of wisdom could be said about both Jesus and the Holy Spirit for it is through both Jesus and the Holy Spirit that God’s wisdom is revealed to us.

HOMILY: Life has many mysteries.  Science tries to solve many of them and it’s interesting that as we come to understand some mysteries, we discover even more.  Understanding people is similar.  Sometimes we don’t even understand people we live with.  Sometimes we don’t even understand ourselves.  Yet there are those who think they should understand the one who created all this mystery and that God should not be mysterious at all.  There is much more in life and about God that we must learn and understand.  Jesus told us that in today’s gospel when he said “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot handle it now.”  He would send the “Spirit of truth” to guide us.

Like all mysteries in the universe, the mystery of God is something we keep understanding with greater clarity, yet we know there’s much more we have to learn.  The mystery of the Trinity is a reminder to us that God is greater than we can ever know. At the same time it is an invitation to continuously come to know God better.  The more we know God, the more we will say we have an awesome God.  Those who say there is no God, or that God cannot be known, have already closed out the possibility of finding any joy in getting to know God at all.

The mystery of the Trinity is a fundamental mystery of our faith.  We were baptized into the Trinity.  We begin our prayers in the name of the Trinity: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Our faith in Jesus’ divinity rests on the doctrine of the Trinity.  What makes the Mass unique and such a powerful prayer is that Jesus prays with us in the Mass; our prayer is offered to the Father in union with the perfect sacrifice of Jesus through the power of the Spirit.

One of the keys to help us understand the Trinity just a little better is the concept of relationships.  Without relationships in our lives, life would be unbearable.  Our relationships unite us with others and yet we know we are separate from them.  We are one with them yet we have our own individual lives.

When two people fall in love, there is an illusion of complete oneness.  They feel a unity and completeness like they’ve never felt before.  That’s why it’s such a powerful feeling.  But the experience is only temporary.  After a while a loving couple discovers they don’t hold all things in common.  Boundaries start to reappear.  Where before everything was “we” and “ours,” now there is also “mine” and “yours.” But that is normal.  That doesn’t mean they no longer love each other.  It only means no human being can fully satisfy us or fulfill us.  Only God can.

Where does the Trinity fit in here?  Well, in the Trinity, there are three persons.  They are in such intense relationship with one another that, although they are distinct persons, they are so perfectly united in every way that they are one.  There are no boundaries; there is nothing that separates them, except they are not the same person.  There are no “mine” and “yours.”  As we hear Jesus say in today’s gospel: “Everything that the Father has is mine.”  The Holy Spirit will take what is Christ’s and declare it to his disciples.  Everything that belongs to the one belongs to the other, yet each is not the same as the other.  The only exception it seems is that the Second Person of the Trinity took on a human nature, but that is a mystery to contemplate at some other time.

If good, healthy, love filled relationships bring us joy, what joy there must be in God among the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!  This joy is so abundant it overflows; it overflows to such an extent that God wants to share God’s joy with us.  This relationship between Father, Son and Spirit is what God invites us to be part of.  This is grace.  God loves you and God loves me, so much so that God shares God's very being with us.  We probably will never understand why God loves us so much or why God chose to make us children of God.  That too is a mystery, a mystery we will experience in a most wonderful way when that life of grace comes to full maturity in heavenly glory.  This is why it is so important to remain in God’s grace in this life, for grace is the beginning of eternal life right now.

Thank you very much for your consideration in this regard. Indeed, I remain grateful for your important service to the Church, and in particular to the priests and bishops.

137. 5/4/2010 - Cardinal - Vatican

Thanks a lot for your gift and your encouragement in my priestly ministry. Thank you for showing and expressing your love to all of us as priests as this year is dedicated to us. Please know I have greatly appreciated your letter and your gift. May God continue to rain down upon you and others his immense blessings and grace.

134. 5/2/2010 - Priest - OH

I have Cycle B & C of your publication Guiding Light. What must I do to assure my receiving Cycle A? I do want to complete my series. I took full retirement when I turned 80 five years ago. What I missed mostly was preaching homilies after all those years since 1950 working in parishes. Now instead of giving homilies I read them.

133. 5/2010 - Priest - PA

Thank you very much and God bless you in your mission for Christ and His Church with appreciation.

132. 5/3/2010 - Priest - CA

Please use enclosed in thanks for your prayers and literature sent — especially Father's homilies —

131. 4/28/2010 - Priest - OH

Thank you for the "Guiding Light" (The Word Alive in Our Hearts). I am grateful for your thoughtfulness and generosity. I do enjoy reading Father Joe's homilies and quite often get inspired for my own — although not as inspirational as his. Thanks again for all you do. May God continue to bless your work.

130. 5/2010 - Priest - NY

Thank you for your gift!

129. 5/11/2010 - Priest - NJ

Thank you for sending Fr. Joseph Robinson's book of homilies to the members of our congregation. We look forward to reading Fr. Robinson's inspirational homilies.

128. 5/6/2010 - Priest -

Thanks a million for your gift of a wonderful book "Guiding Light - Feed My Soul - Homilies by Fr. Joe Robinson." I have been reading and meditating these faith-filled homilies for Cycle C. This book has helped a lot in my priesthood. Thank you, Gracias! May the Lord continue to bless you now and always!

127. 5/3/2010 - Priest -

Thank you very, very much for the Book! Guiding Light - Feed My Soul - Homilies by Fr. Joe Robinson. I deeply appreciate all your precious endless prayers and for everything you do for me and for all the priests. God bless you all.

126. 4/2010 - Priest - CA

Please accept my sincere thanks for the excellent homily book by your brothers, Jr. Joseph Robinson. It does help me. Thank you for your love for priests and priesthood. The book and your letter are wonderful gestures. Thank you for all you do for us, the priests. Your love, concern and prayers have tonic effect on us. It is a great feeling when we know we have somebody who cares. People like you make us feel that after all we are not orphans (in human terms).

125. 4/12/2010 - Priest - CT

I enclose a donation for your ministry. Thank you for the book of homilies by Fr. Robinson. They have helped me in preparing my own homilies. Would you kindly send me Cycles A & B. Also please send me "Spiritual Newsletter" (compilation of 9 newsletters) and also "Ecce Fides" and please bill me at the above address.

124. 4/5/2010 - Priest - CA

Thank you! I would like to thank you personally because praying for the priesthood of your brothers, you are praying for the sole priesthood of Christ, which we all by our baptism participate. These times where we ministerial priests are persecuted for our good actions, justice, and caring for the poor have more enemies than friends. You become like an oasis in the middle of a desert. Thank you for praying for priests. Thank you for sharing this wonderful book. I read few pages and liked, I am sure, I will use it.

123. 4/2010 - Priest - PA

Thank you so much for you kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. I greatly appreciate your loving gesture, fervent faith and sharing of your gifts. May the risen Christ continue to strengthen your faith and bless all of you. Happy Easter!

122. 3/26/2010 - Priest - Washington DC

121. 3/22/2010 - Priest - NY

Many thanks for the copy of your brother's homilies for the Sundays in the C Cycle. They are useful and I thank you. At one time, I use to get your newsletter. Have not in some time. Is it possible to be put on your mailing list?

120. 2/17/2010 - Msgr. - Vatican

Thank you for the gift of Father Robinson's book of homilies and for the prayers offered on behalf of me and other priests. Your work of spiritual renewal is deeply appreciated. Thank you for your letter, your very kind words, and for the copy of Guiding Light: Feed My Soul. I appreciate your brother, Father Joe Robinson, graciously sharing with his fellow priests the gift of his homilies. I am certain it will be a useful addition to my library and a good companion to my prayer and contemplation. I appreciate your thoughtfulness, Ms. Ring. May you have a blessed Lenten season and a joyous Easter! God's blessings.

107. 3/11/2010 - Priest - PA

Thank you for the book "Guiding Light" and special thanks for your prayers and support. I will remember you and your charitable work in my prayers.

106. 3/10/2010 - Priest - CA

Thank you and all in our special ministry. Please also, thank your brother Joe. His book comes at an opportune time. Frankly, I'm in a "rut". After 52 years I am "running on empty" for new homiletic ideas. While in Kenya and Tanzania for 30 years, no problem! Now, in retirement, "filling in" at local parishes, I need good reference for ideas- not the homily itself but the ideas it generates for my own. Joe's book really is a "Guiding Light".

105. 3/10/2010 - Priest - CA

Thank you for the book of homilies by your brother. I am sure I will find them most helpful. It is wonderful you have twenty-hour Adoration. Please pray for me.

104. 3/9/2010 - Msgr. - CA

I want to thank you on behalf of myself and Father who also works with me for the recent gifts of homilies. I have enjoyed the stories of Fr. Robinson. Thanks of thinking of us.

103. 3/10/2010 – Priest – CA

Thank you so much for this wonderful gift, Celebrating Light. Fr. Robinson has wonderful insights that I plan on sharing with our retreatants weekly. God bless you and your wonderful ministry.

102. 3/10/2010 – Priest – IL

Thank you for the copy of Feed My Soul (Cycle C).

101. 3/8/2010 – Priest - PA

Thank you for the Homilies of Cycle C of Fr. Joe Robinson. God bless you in your apostolate.

100. 3/8/2010 – Priest - MA

I just wanted to thank you for the book “Guiding Light” for this Lent and the celebration of the year for Priests. May the Lord reward you with his grace for your work, prayers, and sacrifices. It was very thoughtful of you that you have generously shared your gift of ministry with the priests.

95. 3/3/2010 – Priest – CA

Thank you for sending me Fr. Joe Robinson’s book of homilies for Cycle C, and especially for all of the prayers and devotions that the Shepherds offer for us priests and for the Church. I spend a great deal of time preparing my homilies, and from reading father Joe’s book, I can see how it will be helpful to me.

94. 3/1/2010 – Priest – NY

Recently I received your book of homilies by Fr. Joe Robinson, and trusting it will be helpful for preparing our Sunday Celebrations, enclosed is a check. It was my understand that Shepherds of Christ Ministries was no longer in existence, especially since my classmate of High School and College in Cincinnati, Fr. Ed Carter had died. Peace, Prayers & Progress in Jesus. By the way, my 1st prayer every morning is the Morning Offering.

93. 3/1/2010 – Priest – MA

Thank you for sending me a copy of Fr. Robinson’s collection of homilies. I have already found it helpful in preaching about the Transfiguration this past Sunday. It’s a fine resource. Thanks, too, for your prayers.

 92. 2/26/2010 – Priest – IN

I like the book of homilies.

91. 2/25/2010 – Priest – IL

Thank you for sending me the book Guiding Light, Feed My Soul. I shall treasure this as I used to receive newsletters from Father Carter for many years. If people had been praying for priests years ago then the priesthood would not be in themes it is at this time. I shall remember you at my Mass tomorrow. I am very grateful for your gift. May God be with you.

90. 2/23/2010 – Priests – IL

Thank you for your letter of January 13, 2010, with the enclosed copy of the book of homilies by Fr. Joseph Robinson. I Sincerely appreciate your kind and generous gift. Moreover, I am pleased also to know about the Shepherds of Christ and your ministries, particularly your prayers for priests.

77. 1/28/2010 – Priest – NY

I received the book “Guiding Light Feed My Soul” – Thank you. They are indeed beautiful homilies that Fr. Joe Robinson gave in Cycle C Book. I have no idea how much it cost the ministry to print and send this book out to all the priests, but I can imagine that it was a great amount of money. Enclosed please find my gift to help to defray the expenses involved. It isn’t much I know, but maybe it will help some, o.k.? Once again THANK YOU and Good luck in your ministries in getting the word of Jesus out to others.

76. 1/26/2010 – Priest – NY

Thank you so much for making me so proud and affirmed in my priesthood. You truly make our priesthood worth living for. I am a chaplain in a correctional facility – “the priest-in-prison”. Your love makes me love my prisoners more. God bless you and continue to reward the work of your hands.

63. 1/14/2010 – Priest – Florida

My twin brother and I are priests in Florida and I’m sure I speak for many priests throughout the country in expressing appreciation to Father Joseph. His Christmas homily – the voices of all within and around the crèche, was especially beautiful – and I didn’t want the year to get too for away from us without expressing gratitude to you and to Father Joseph – what a fantastic Ministry. Please know that you and your brother are in the prayers of many of us.

62. 1/10/2010 – Priest - Florida

I was so happy and overjoyed to receive this past Advent the best Christmas present – one that I had wished for – in your brother’s Cycle c homilies – Guiding Light. The book cover is beautiful and when Cycle B ended I said to myself I wish I had the new cycle, but alas, I didn’t know where I was going to get it…Then like an answer to prayer, it was in the mail! I was already missing his homilies at the beginning of December until the book arrived. I love the cover and I love the work you are doing. In the Year of the Priesthood this is certainly a welcome gift and presentation to the priests. And for me the best Christmas gift. And it came free!! The cover is great, the print is nice and big and easy to read, and the thoughts, of course, are great. One week Fr. Robinson talked about how long he was in a parish and changes, and I could use that talk myself. So the Scripture, reflections, homilies, and personal antidotes are perfect. With your generous gift you have certainly made it a blessed and Merry Christmas for me. Thank you for your prayers before the Blessed Christmas and be assured of our prayers every week when we pull out “Guiding Light – Feed my Soul” for encouraging words for our parishioners here.

61. 1/7/2010 – Priest – Florida

Thank you for mailing me free copy of Homilies by Fr. Joe Robinson. I enjoy reading his homilies. In the past you sent me that of another Cycle. Happy New Year to all in Shepherds of Christ Ministries.

60. 1/7/2010 – Msgr. – Ohio

Many thanks for the gift of your brother’s book of homilies. I am 90, in a nursing home, sometimes with two Masses a day, and I need some ideas for homilies.

59. 1/5/2010 – Priest – Ohio.

I am delighted to have your greetings at Christmas, with all those dear names personally signed. Thank you. The photo of Fr. Carter with John and Rita is good.

58. 12/29/2009 – Priest – Kentucky

Thanks a lot for your lovely greetings. I appreciate your love and prayers. Wish you a hope-filled 2010 – with New Year blessings!

57. 12/28/2009 – Priest – Indiana

A word of gratitude for your prayers, ministry, and copy of “Guiding Light”! God bless your dedicated work in His vineyard!

56. 12/27/2009 – Priest – Kentucky

Thank you for the gift of the book of homilies and especially all you do spiritually for the Church and for priests. We need more emphasis on the spiritual aspects of the priesthood, along with all the other things priests are asked to do. I do Parish Missions and realize many Catholic’s seek a deeper spiritual life along with their lived “human” life.

55. 12/24/2009 – Priest – Indiana

Thank you for sharing Fr. Joseph Robinson’s homilies with me. May God bless you and your apostolate for us priests!

54. 12/23/2009 - Priest - Kentucky

Just a small devotion to let you know I enjoy reading Fr. Joe's homilies. God bless you and your ministry in 2010.

53. 12/23/2009 – Priest – Indiana

Thank you for the book “Guiding Light” for the Cycle C Readings. May God bless all of you with the best of health and peace throughout the coming New Year!

52. 12/2009 – Priest – Ohio

Thanks for the book. Enclosed please find check.

51. 12/2009 – Priest – Ohio

Merry Christmas and I blessed New Year. Thanks for your prayers for priests. You also will be remembered in my prayers.

50. 12/22/09 – Priest – Ohio

Thank you for the book gift of “Guiding Light”. Much appreciated for enriched preaching. Enclosed is a little token gift. Many thanks! Christmas cheer and blessings!

49. 12/20/2009 - Priest - Ohio

Thank you for sending Fr. Robinson's book of homilies for Cycle C. Actually you had given me a copy earlier, and now I can share this treasure with another priest. And a treasure it is, both the introduction and homily text. I sincerely hope the holiest Birthday anniversary will be a religious experience for you and all of Shepherds of Christ.

48. 12/2009 - Priest - Florida

Thank you for Guiding Light by your brother, Fr. Joseph Robinson. I greatly appreciate this gift and I thank you very much. This "Feed My Soul" is based on the Sunday Gospels of Year C — Do you still have spare copies for Years A and B? What do they sell for? Thank You. Enjoy the Christmas Season.

47. 2009 – Priest - Ohio

Please accept this donation to help in some small way the apostolate you have so devotedly engaged in for the glory of God and the spiritual growth of his people.

46. 12/20/2009 – Priest - Ohio

Greetings from Ohio. And Merry Christmas! Thanks for the book of Fr. Joe's homilies. I've used it already today in my own homily. I remember you from the Athenaeum Chorale.

45. 2009 – Priest - Ohio

Enclosed, please find a check for the book entitled, “Guiding Light: Feed My Soul”, by Fr. Joe Robinson. I enjoy his homiletic reflections very much. They are very helpful and spiritually uplifting. Thank you for sending the book so quickly. I received it in just a few days following my order, just in time for the First Sunday of Advent. I would be very interested in receiving the Cycle A edition when it is in print. Thanks again for all your help.

44. 2009 – Priest – Ohio

Thank you so much for your gift book, “Guiding Light”. I’ve read a number of homilies, and they are really good. However, the book has already led me into sin! You see, I’ve “stolen” some of Fr. Robinson’s stories and incorporate them into my own homilies! Many blessings, and I will certainly be purchasing items from you.

43. 2009 – Priest – Ohio

Thank you for remembering me and for your kindness. Be assured of continual prayers for you and your family.

42. 12/2009 – Priest – Missouri

Thank you so much for the “Cycle C” readings. I always read the “B” ones – great insights and ideas. Wishing all of you the Blessings of the Christmas Season. Hope 2010 will be a time of great joy in your ministry.

41. 12/2009 – Priest – Ohio

Thank you for the complimentary copy of Guiding Light Feed My Soul – the homilies of Father Joe. I am grateful for your kindness. May God continue to bless you and your ministry in the New Year.

40. 12/2009 – Priest – Ohio

Thank you for your generous gift of Fr. Robinson’s homilies and for all your care and kindnesses for priests. I too will remember you in prayer. The world needs us. May God bless you and your ministries.

39. 12/2009 – Priest – Florida

Thank you for the homily book – I used them a lot last year. I really appreciate them.

Thanks for sending me the book “Guiding Light”. I wish you all success and for my prayers for the noble ministry you do.

36. 12/19/2009 – Priest – Ohio

Thanks for the copy of your brother Joe’s homilies. Years ago he and I worked together at St. Columban. He is a good friend.

33. 12/10/2009 - Bishop - USA

Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness! I have received Fr. Joe Robinson’s Cycle C, Guiding Light Feed My Soul along with the prayer cards and the CD titled The Priest, A Gift from God. I will share these with the priests and the faithful of the Diocese. May God shower his blessings upon you this holy Season of Advent and Christmas!

32. 12/4/2009 - Cardinal - Vatican

I recently received your letter of 13 November 2009 in which you presented a homily by Fr. Michael Barth. Thank you for your prayers and concern for me and the work; they are much appreciated. In reviewing the materials on your website, it appears that your materials may be available in Italian as well as in English. If you have materials in Italian I would be interested in seeing those in lieu of the materials in English. If the materials are only available in English then we would be most happy with those items. Availing ourselves of this opportunity to express our thankfulness and to extend our best wishes for a blessed Advent.

31. 12/4/2009 - Cardinal - Vatican.

Thank you for your letter addressed to Cardinal and the books and material you enclosed from the Shepherds of Christ Ministries. The Cardinal has asked me to extend his thanks to you. Wishing God's blessing, I remain.

19. 11/16/2009 - Cardinal - Vatican

Please accept my appreciation for your letter of November 13, current. My commitment to remember in prayer the efforts of the Shepherds to support priestly formation and lifestyle. Your practice of perpetual adoration before the Blessed Sacrament is a wonderful expression of the kind of entrustment to the Lord of those many needs which priesthood in the contemporary Church continues to experience. Before the same Altar, kindly remember me and those associated with me in the service.

18. 11/15/2009 - Bishop - USA

I would like to thank you for sharing with me the book Guiding Light: Feed My Soul, CD and other pamphlets. I am sure your efforts in putting together these materials will be greatly rewarded. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and prayers. 11/11/2009 - Bishop - USA

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:

"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.

"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.

"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."

- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,
feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)
