Galatians 5: 22-23

On the other hand the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control; no law can touch such things as these.

John 20: 19-23

In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be with you,' and, after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord, and he said to them again, 'Peace be with you.

'As the Father sent me,
so am I sending you.'

After saying this he breathed on them and said:

Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive anyone's sins,
they are forgiven;
if you retain anyone's sins,
they are retained.

From The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
    by Louis J. Puhl, S.J.
  p. 12

                        23. FIRST PRINCIPLE AND FOUNDATION

Man is created to praise, reverence and serve God
our Lord, and by this means to save his soul.

The other things on the face of the earth are created
for man to help him in attaining the end for which he
is created.

Hence, man is to make use of them in as far as they
help him in the attainment of his end, and he must rid
himself of them in as far as they prove a hindrance to
him.

Therefore, we must make ourselves indifferent to all
created things, as far as we are allowed free choice and
are not under any prohibition. Consequently, as far
as we are concerned, we should not prefer health to
sickness, riches to poverty, honor to dishonor, a long
life to a short life. The same holds for all other things.

Our one desire and choice should be what is more
conducive to the end for which we are created.

                Jesus is the Savior

                Song: A Song from Jesus

We are called to praise, reverence and serve
God our Lord, and by this means to save our soul.

God out of His goodness created us —

God has given us a free will —
our dignity as human beings —

                God made us

If we are good it is because of
                    God's grace

God has given us this gift to
                    praise, reverence and serve
                    God —

Our call is to serve Him
                    here and to
                    love Him in eternity —

Make an act of contrition —

See where we have offended Him —

Tell Him we are sorry for our sins —

Beg for grace to serve Him as He
                    deserves

                Beg for grace

                        Prayer from St. Ignatius

Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
To give and not to count the cost;
To fight and not to heed the wounds;
To toil and not to seek for rest;
To labor and not to ask for any reward,
Save that of knowing
that I am doing your will.

Prayer of St Ignatius

Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Thy wounds hide me
Permit me not to be separated from Thee
From the wicked foe defend me
at the hour of my death call me
and bid me come to Thee
That with Thy saints I may praise Thee
For ever and ever. Amen.

                Sing: Take Lord Receive

We are most like God in loving.

                    Adam and Eve rebelled —
We are to be obedient —

The Trinity is the most perfect community
                    of love —

God created us out of His goodness —

                God wants obedience
                    not disobedience —

God gave us a free will —
We can obey or not —

                God wants us to love

God wants us to love Him intently
God wants us to love others as ourselves.

                Response to God's love —

We have a free will —

God wants us to surrender our will
to Him in loving Him and
                    others —

Turn our mind and will over
                    to Him.

                The priest at Mass said

Paul was under house arrest — he said 2 years
Paul went to Rome and there he would die under
                    Nero

The Holy Spirit guides us —
The Holy Spirit helped them and helps us, but we can
                    resist the Holy Spirit

God gives us a free will —

The Gospels have come from John weekdays lately —
                    The disciple He loves

                John is an eye witness

                Jesus died and rose —

We are called to be witnesses because we
                    believe —

                We read the Word
                We read these accounts

We have the Holy Spirit guiding us
                    and we believe

Jesus wants us to bring souls to Him
so they will be led to eternal
                    salvation —

We are to be the witness now —

                It is God's Plan

We have been given a free will to witness —

We are given a sharing in His life in
                    baptism —

Our knowing and loving capacity is elevated
                    is baptism —

God the Father sent His Divine Son
to teach us how to be sons of God —
                    to witness
to lead others to the truth —

Jesus came and taught us about Himself —
Jesus loved us so much He died on the cross —

If we love Jesus we know the cross —
God reveals Himself to us —
                    Jesus died and rose —
Jesus taught us about suffering and
                        the glory

A Prayer before the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

Let me be a holy sacrifice and unite with God in the sacrament of His greatest love.

I want to be one in Him in this act of love, where He gives Himself to me and I give myself as a sacrifice to Him. Let me be a holy sacrifice as I become one with Him in this my act of greatest love to Him.

Let me unite with Him more, that I may more deeply love Him. May I help make reparation to His adorable Heart and the heart of His Mother, Mary. With greatest love, I offer myself to You and pray that You will accept my sacrifice of greatest love. I give myself to You and unite in Your gift of Yourself to me. Come and possess my soul.

Cleanse me, strengthen me, heal me. Dear Holy Spirit act in the heart of Mary to make me more and more like Jesus.

Father, I offer this my sacrifice, myself united to Jesus in the Holy Spirit to You. Help me to love God more deeply in this act of my greatest love.

Give me the grace to grow in my knowledge, love and service of You and for this to be my greatest participation in the Mass. Give me the greatest graces to love You so deeply in this Mass, You who are so worthy of my love.

-Mass Book, December 27, 1995

We are here to love —
We are really free when we are
most like the Plan of the
Father — doing His will —

Obedience to God, to His laws
                    and commands is paramount
                    for our joy, our happiness

                God is over us

Today's readings

Acts 28: 16-20, 30-31

On our arrival in Rome Paul was allowed to stay in lodgings of his own with the soldier who guarded him.

After three days he called together the leading Jews. When they had assembled, he said to them, 'Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. They examined me and would have set me free, since they found me guilty of nothing involving the death penalty; but the Jews lodged an objection, and I was forced to appeal to Caesar, though not because I had any accusation to make against my own nation. That is why I have urged you to see me and have a discussion with me, for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I wear this chain.'

He spent the whole of the two years in his own rented lodging. He welcomed all who came to visit him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the truth about the Lord Jesus Christ with complete fearlessness and without any hindrance from anyone.

Psalm 11: 4-5, 7

Yahweh in his holy temple!
Yahweh, his throne is in heaven;
his eyes watch over the world,
his gaze scrutinises the children of Adam.

Yahweh examines the upright and the wicked,
the lover of violence he detests.

For Yahweh is upright and loves uprightness,
the honest will ever see his face.

John 21: 20-25

Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who had leant back close to his chest at the supper and had said to him, ‘Lord, who is it that will betray you?’ Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘What about him, Lord?’ Jesus answered, ‘If I want him to stay behind till I come, what does it matter to you? You are to follow me.’ The rumour then went out among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said to Peter, ‘He will not die,’ but, ‘If I want him to stay behind till I come.’

This disciple is the one who vouches for these things and has written them down, and we know that his testimony is true.

There was much else that Jesus did; if it were written down in detail, I do not suppose the world itself would hold all the books that would be written.

                Do we seek God?

Do we model our relationships after
the Perfected love of the Trinity

Do we just want what we want
our will and ignore God to get our
                    own will opposed to God

                Discernment of spirits

Living according to the will of God —
the Holy Spirit counseling us —

                    evil spirit

Living against the will of God —
                        opposed to God's will

We want to attain loving freedom —

We should want to do God's will

Holy Spirit Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit, almighty Sanctifier, God of love, who filled the Virgin Mary with grace, who wonderfully changed the hearts of the apostles, who endowed all Your martyrs with miraculous courage, come and sanctify us. Enlighten our minds, strengthen our wills, purify our consciences, rectify our judgment, set our hearts on fire, and preserve us from the misfortunes of resisting Your inspirations. Amen.

We want all our actions to draw us closer
to God — to love Him more deeply

We want to listen to God about our
                    vocation

What is God's plan for me in the Plan of redemption? —

We pray for the grace to know God's will
                    and to do it —

We want to learn to communicate in love —

The Holy Trinity communicates in perfect
                    love —

We want unity in the Holy Spirit —

One mind, one heart in God's plan

In this obedience of us to God's will there
is unity, order, not disorder, discord

                Why did God make me?

                    See God's Plan —
                        now on earth
my life lived to know and love and serve Him
my life lived to witness to others
my life lived to be with Him forever
                            loving in eternity

If I see only my will, today and not the whole

I am like the guy with goggles —
acting with this free will — not according
to the big picture — doing my will opposed to
 God's will

like a bull in a china shop

I am in this world —
to love, reverence and serve God —
but the willful man serves himself —
                    seeks power for himself —
                    wants riches for himself —
                    affection for himself —

The man focused on the big picture —
                    doing God's will —
                    sees God first
                    sees His will first
acts with God's will first in his mind

A jealous person sees through eyes of
                    jealousy

The man with tainted vision is acting
                    out of his wounded
                    human nature —

He is not giving his free will to
                        God's will

                    He is selfish —

He sees himself first and what he
wants and he acts from this —
opposed to God's will for his vain
                            glory —

The person with his eyes focused on
                    God first
acts to praise, reverence and serve God

He acts under the Standard of Christ —
He is under the Master —
He lives to build the Kingdom of Christ

The person with his eyes focused on
himself — sees himself as master —

I had a dream about the Carson house
                and remembered my dad —

He wanted everything put back exactly
                as he wanted

He was teaching us kids obedience, but
I had a dream of people at war outside
and children were in the house taking
                refuge, afraid because bombs were
                outside — I usually don't dream
about this, but it was at the Carson house and
children were inside while bombs went
                off outside —

I saw down the street Carson and Glenway —
it was raining and the street was glassy
and there was a mysterious light where
                    the attackers were

But I was praying really hard with no fear,
because I was so deeply connected
to God — praying so deep and I had
trust in Him and no fear

What was interesting was the same
corner Carson and Glenway and that
turned corner is where I had
a vision of children turning the
corner in the second Blue Book
led by a lady with a tweed coat
                    and I was there

It was an interior vision — the kind I
see in my eye lids like a movie
and a screen and it is accompanied by
                    that same glistening, sparkling light
                    when the vision starts

February 6, 1994 5:00 a.m. (excerpt)

Notes: At 6:30 a.m. I saw a vision of children, two adults by their side, walking together in a group. One adult in front was wearing a scarf on a tweed coat. She had brown hair which was curled. She turned and had her hand on a child. She was leading them. The other adult was in the back. There were about 20 to 25 kids on a street. They all had their coats and they had just turned the corner.

Mary help me to love the Holy Spirit through
                    your Immaculate Heart

June 30, 1994

R. Dear Spirit, oh, Holy Spirit, how little I tell You of my love! You are indeed a Person. You are God. It is through Your gifts that I receive the knowledge of God, to know, love and serve Him more. Open me, oh, Spirit. Open this closed heart of mine and fill me with the fire of Your love. Impart to me the tongues of fire I need to do the work God wants me to do. Give me Your love so I can love God more than myself. Help me to surrender to You and let You live and dwell in my heart in such union!

Oh, Spirit of God, open my eyes so I can see more and more with Your gifts what I need to see to serve and to love You. Help me to love my brothers as You want me to, to know how to love as God wants me to.

Mary, you are the spouse of the Holy Spirit. It is through Him that Jesus was conceived in your womb. Draw me to your Spouse, the Holy Spirit, to greater union with Him. Help me to love the Holy Spirit more and more through your Immaculate Heart.

Help me to grow in my intimacy with You, oh, Holy Spirit. Help me to hear what You want to tell me. You are the love between the Father and the Son. Help me to know the fire of this love. I want to know more Your love for me. I want to love You more, to grow in deeper union with You.

Mary, help me to love the Holy Spirit through your Immaculate Heart.

Father, Son, Holy Spirit: three Persons in one God. Each Person to be loved individually, yet God to be loved as One, in union with Mary! Such burning in my heart for each Person, a burning to love God, three in one, through Mary's Immaculate Heart.

I could spend such joyful hours dwelling on this immense love. God is present and truly in our midst and in our hearts. I cannot love my brothers as God wants me to if I do not know God. When I am filled with the love of God, then I can love my brothers as He wants: "that you are willing to lay down your life for your brother." It takes that intimacy, that oneness, to know God, to love as God wants me to love.

To love you, my brother, I must constantly try to be more united with the one, true, magnificent God. Through Mary, I learn to love God more intimately.

Open me, oh, Spirit of the living God. Open my heart to love, to the fire of Your love. Enkindle it deep in my heart. The love of the one, triune God!

Oh, Mary, help me to love God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, through your Heart.

Praise God in His magnificence. Praise God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Let us pour out our abundant love, through Mary, on Them. Teach us to love You, God. Help us, in our littleness, to give You love through Mary's sinless Heart. I can grow in my intimacy with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

How do we teach ourselves to have
our agenda and even in prayer
                    think about ourselves instead
                    of God —

Can we let go of those — like in my
dream — coming to attack and be
                    focused so deeply in God
close our mind to distractions where
we are jealous, angry, and give
the reverence to God that is
                        His due

At Mass can we be united so deeply to Jesus
praying to the Father in the Holy Spirit and
all the angels and saints and
                    the souls in purgatory and
                    pray united to the Church
                    for the salvation of souls

Or am I always thinking of how I
look, what detail is in my life —
                    how I sound —

Do I get deep down like I was at the
                    Carson house with bombing outside
and really try to get united to God —
                    shutting myself, distractions out and
focus on communicating with God —

Do I dare to let go of my control
                                                my mind
                                                my plan

And love — Prayer is love of God
                    Fr. Carter says

The Mass is an act of love

Prayer for Union with Jesus

Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.

I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.

I am Yours, Lord. I want to have my life in You. I want to do the will of the Father. Give me the strength to put aside the world and let You operate my very being. Help me to act as You desire. Strengthen me against the distractions of the devil to take me from Your work.

When I worry, I have taken my focus off of You and placed it on myself. Help me not to give in to the promptings of others to change what in my heart You are making very clear to me. I worship You, I adore You and I love You. Come and dwell in me now.

                SELF less

                Dying to self

Jesus died on the cross for our
                    sins

                Jesus died
                Jesus rose

We are to die to the selfish focus on
                    ourselves

What does God want of me —
                Not have an agenda

                Why did God make me?

Are all the details I worry about going
                    to matter —
screw drivers in a row when I
screamed to be a perfectionist and
                    hurt the dignity of others

Where are the screw drivers if the
guy is in purgatory for his
                    selfish, unloving angry heart

                The Ignatian Retreat is
majorly to look at our sins
                    to admit them
                    to forgive
                    and not to sin again

                Taking responsibility for our sins

                Obedience verses rebellion
                    (1) doing the will of God
                    (2) not be like the angels who fell and said
                            "I will not serve"
                    (3) What am I doing for Christ —
What have I done for Christ —

We must pray for the grace to be obedient —
to have deeper union with Jesus

                Sin makes us miserable

                Disobedience makes us miserable —

Look what happened to us because of Adam and Eve's
                    sin

                Sin is ingratitude

                    Sin hurts our relationship with
                        God and others

Selfishness is not God's will — Being
                        jealous, possessive, combat, arguing to
                        be over those over us

                How is my heart?

                    Am I rebellious?
Is my heart like ice — so focused on details and
                        unloving?
                    Is my heart like stone?

                Think about hell —

There is no relationship in hell —
For all eternity knowing I will never have this
                        relationship with God and others
                    Total isolation

                Hatred in hell

Hell is the ultimate consequences of
                    mortal sin —

How we love God and love others determine
                    our outcome for eternity

                Make a good confession —

                Pray to the Holy Spirit

Beg to be forgiven for all the sins of your
                    past life

                Forgive your enemies

Ask for the grace to see your sins and be sorry
for how you have offended God and others —

                How foolish to
Spend your life, sinning, being disobedient
and then trying to prove you are
                        perfect — are right

People who spend their life trying to prove
                        they are right, seeking dominance
                        over authority are seeing through
                        tainted glasses —

Do they put themselves over God?

                Discipleship

Mary is the perfect handmaid of the Lord

                    Mary — humility

Luke 1: 46-55

And Mary said:

My soul proclaims
    the greatness of the Lord
and my spirit rejoices
    in God my Saviour;
because he has looked upon
    the humiliation of his servant.
Yes, from now onwards
all generations will call me blessed,
for the Almighty
has done great things for me.
Holy is his name,
and his faithful love extends age after age
    to those who fear him.
He has used the power of his arm,
he has routed the arrogant of heart.
He has pulled down princes
    from their thrones
        and raised high the lowly.
He has filled the starving with good things,
    sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the help
    of Israel his servant,
        mindful of his faithful love
—according to the promise
    he made to our ancestors—
of his mercy to Abraham
and to his descendants for ever.

                    Humility is truth —

                    The humble person doesn't want
                        to lie —
they live their lives in truth —

Some lie and it is a habit — the devil is the
                        father of lies

                When we give into
focusing on what others think —
not seeing as God wants first
This becomes a habit in us
                Worrying how others see us

We can make this how we act —
this can become more important than
                    God's will

St. Peter denied Jesus when Jesus was about to
                    be crucified —
Peter was worried what others would think —

This was a defect in Peter's character —

He had done this before —
even after being that close to Jesus —

When we give into jealousy — we can
                    act jealous almost automatically with
                    our tainted glasses —
we have a free will —
                        we can change those bad
                        habits and vices

But we have to want to change —

We have to examine our conscience and see our
defects and beg for the grace to change them —

A prideful man tells himself he is perfect —
                    he is right and
Eve went so far to want to be equal to God

Mary did the will of God

                Eve did not obey God

                Judas sinned ———> hung himself

Peter sinned ———> Peter was sorry

                Why do we act
                    (1) for ourselves
                    (2) vain glory
                    (3) power
                    (4) affection from others for ourselves

                Do we act —
                    FOR LOVE of God
                    to please the Father

                Jesus left home
                Jesus did His mission
                Jesus did not abandon His
                    mission

To His death on the cross —
                    He gave His all

                Jesus did the Father's will

Jesus wants us to be made clean —
To get rid of dirt in us
                    To go to confession —
We need to be washed —
                    Jesus washed the Apostles' feet
                    He is the Master

                Judas betrayed Jesus

Peter was sorry — Peter loved Jesus

Picture of the Sacred Heart of JesusYou Were Hungry and I Sent Manna from Heaven (excerpt)

May 17, 1994 After Mass at Father Smith's Chapel (3 priests were there)

Jesus: I will become one in you. You will become one in Me as you open your hearts to My love. Be open, little ones. I want to love you and love through you. Empty yourself of any impurities in your heart. Forgive your brothers. Do not be angry. Keep yourselves clean and free from sin. Go to Confession. Fast, My beloved ones. It is in fasting you are drawn close to Me. Do not give in to yourselves. Discipline yourselves. This will increase your union with Me.

I am God. There is no better reward for your efforts than to achieve union with God. I want this union with you. It is you who keep us apart. Die to yourself, child, and live in Me. You must surrender your lives to Me and let Me operate your very being. Die to self and live in Me.

R. Alleluia. And they knew new life. It was the life of Christ that dwelled within them. Praise the Lord! Praise and honor to the one, true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

He constantly says, "Unite in My love. I call you to be one in Me. I am sent from the Father that you shall be one in Us."

Jesus: I am He Whose bootstraps you are unworthy to tie, yet I come with such love for you. You will be one in Us. Unite in My love. Go out into the world, spread the gospel, go to the highways and the byways, spread My love. My love is the way. You will unite and become one when you love in Me for there is no division in a heart of God. You must be one in Us. As the Father has sent Me, I send you into the world to spread My love. Will you answer My call? Harken, for time is short. Your brothers are in need of this work. In your actions of love you will preach My gospel. Go and love one another as I have loved you.

R. Unity and love are coexistent. Hate and love do not coexist. I must love, love everyone. He died for my precious brother. I must love more and more like Him.

He is talking about unity. Unity is only achieved through loving. To hate any man causes division. My heart must be pure, free from all hate. I cannot do this alone. I need God's love to love my brothers as He is calling me to do.

Betty is a handmaid who has prayed in the

China Church for 11 years. To get from her

house to the church she uses a walker and

must go over a creek and a little bridge.

We wanted a little place she could rest

by the Church. We need about $1,000 to

make this happen. Can you help us?

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:

"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.

"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.

"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."

- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,
feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)

Yes — All the ends of the earth have seen
the power of God.

God has called us to be united as a family in
the Shepherds of Christ.

This is a vocation — to pray deeply for
the priests, the Church and the world and
to help support the Newsletter and the
Ministries.

Remember the image of Our Lady
of Clearwater on the building. We have
very special Fatima statues so you can
have a special place of prayer in your
homes, praying the rosary for your family
and for the priests, the Church and the
world. If you are interested in these
very special Fatima/Clearwater statues
e-mail me with your phone number
and address
info@sofc.org.

     Those using the special statues
will be united to us in a special way —
We want you to pray the Shepherds of
Christ prayers for the priests, the Church
and the world from your special place
in your home.

When people have set up a prayer corner/niche
with this statue, Fatima/Clearwater glass, they have
reported that their families have received special
blessings. With this statue it is important to pray
the prayers in the red prayer manual and consecrate
your home and family to the Sacred Heart and
Immaculate Heart.

Call Sheila or Doris about statues or go to China or
Clearwater.
