                R. I am yours to possess – help me
to have my life in Thee –

Jesus: My child it is giving – giving love –
obedience to God in all things –

                    Satan prowls the world like
a roaring lion looking for someone
                to devour.

                    Satan's grip is paralyzing and
                crippling.

I ask a person to serve Me
and to obey the law of love –
Love is giving – love knows
no limits – love gives and
                keeps giving –
                love has no bounds –
love is from the heart –
                love holds itself accountable for
sins and is sorry to offend
                    God and hurt others –

My Sacred Heart shows My on-fire-love –
I obeyed My Father's will to My
                death on the cross –

Comfort the Weary Soul

December 3, 1993 - 4:30a.m.

Jesus speaks: Come to Me and I will give you rest. I am the God of Jacob and Joseph and all of your ancestors. I know all things. I know you far better than you know yourself. I wait by day and by night for you to come and be with Me. Will you come or will you continue your lives without the Master? I am the Alpha and Omega. I am all that you need. Why do you remain so far from Me? Some tell themselves they are holy but they hold themselves at arm's length from Me. Open up the gates. Do not be afraid. Let yourself go. I am a person. I am a personal God. I am your best friend. I wait when you are weary and bowed down to comfort you. Will you come, or go to man for your answers? If you miss going to Me you remain without help. Man cannot give your weary soul the rest it needs. Man cannot do for you what God will do for you.

Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. I have all you need. Others cannot comfort your weary soul. If you receive comfort, it is only momentary. God's comfort is everlasting. Run with open arms to Him Who loves you and waits at the gates to comfort you. Don't go it alone. Come all the time, strength and weaknesses, and I will always be there to light your way! Turn to Me, morning, noon, night, trials and joy. Always come to your best friend.

Only God can fix the things of the soul. That is His territory. When the spirit is weakened, go to Jesus and let Him heal you. He is the doctor for wounded souls. He is all you need. Pour your cares out to Him and He loves you and pours His trust into you.

I am Jesus, Son of the Living God. Harken, I wait and I am here. I love you.  end of excerpt

Jesus: I carried the cross ladened with
the sins of the world. I carried
the cross. I gave, and I gave and
I gave. I shed the last drop of
My Blood and I gave the last beat
                of My Heart –

Pray as I have instructed for this
election. Pray with all your heart –
Pray for Fr. Joe's book, the cover,
                the inside, the publisher.

Pray for the prayer with the
                Imprimatur I gave you. Pray
and offer up the cross – offer up
all your sufferings in love for
Me. I love you so much My child –
I love you, I love you, I love you –

                Satan is hate –

A person who lives their lives in
                pride and envy and jealousy
and anger is serving satan –
And the more their lives are lived
in such bad habits they consent
to their bringing down darkness and
hatred in their hearts – they push
                God farther and farther away.

I ask for service and love,
but a person has a free will
to say "no" to Me –
They say "no" it can't happen –
They can be so combatal they
                argue over everything to test
and to try the just man saying
                "yes" to My will.

                    The person that stands against
God and refuses to give, grows
in greater and greater darkness –
They say "yes" to satan –
                They say "no" to God.

They live in a place where they
                bring darkness down on themselves.
They keep going into deeper and deeper
                darkness with their will opposing
God and they expect to break the
rules and hate and hurt others
and get away with it. They can
                show impudence and disgust
that anyone would try to stop
their evil ways. The more they
give into satan – the more satan
                comes and operates in them
and they give only into greater
                and greater darkness –
greater and greater pride and anger
that the wrong they do is not accepted
                as right.

They are angered at other men
                and they disobey and show
                bad example to others.

The man steeped in sin, walking
deeply in darkness can hold themselves
                unaccountable for their sins and
                unresponsible for their actions.

Since they lie about their actions
to themselves – they continue with
their "no" to God and can be
                indignant when others are
                persecuted, tortured by their evil
                ways.

I am the Light of the world.
I served My Father. I showed
you love. I gave of Myself
freely on the cross doing My
                Father's will.

                    Cancer grows and eats a
man and then attacks his organs –
his life of the body cannot
                function.

Your mother had cancer and died
when you were five years old –
                remember seeing her and her
                suffering in the Carson house
                and there she died, leaving
                five small children.

                    Fr. Carter began the Movement
as Founder – You as co-founder.
I have given the abundant grace
of continuing the work I told
                him and you to begin.

He was wrapped in cancer and
died when he was 70 years old,
                leaving you to continue the
mission, the vision I gave to
Fr. Carter to help renew the Church
                and the world.

The Priestly Writing is the first
                consideration of My Movement
and is a gift I give to priests
and hierarchy and to the world.

                    The prayer chapters are a
                co-equal mission. Fr. Carter tried
to begin prayer chapters in every
state and all over the world –
                On October 13, 1994 I gave this
                message –

October 13, 1994

The Birth of the Full Ministries
of the Shepherds of Christ

"I wish to share with you part of a message which Jesus gave us on October 13, 1994. The message tells us about the expansion of the Shepherds of Christ movement:

'My beloved priest-companion, today I come to you with another mission. I am asking you to establish Shepherds of Christ Ministries. At My request you have already begun the priestly newsletter, "Shepherds of Christ", and the prayer chapters, Shepherds of Christ Associates...

'I am giving you this message on this day, the 77th Anniversary of the Great Apparition at Fatima, because of the close connection between the Shepherds of Christ movement and the Fatima message. The Fatima message is centered in devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart, especially in consecration to Our Hearts. Shepherds of Christ Ministries is also centered in devotion to Our Hearts. I will use Shepherds of Christ Ministries as a great instrument in helping to bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. When this occurs, My Church and the world will be experiencing the great era of peace promised by My Mother at Fatima.

'Today, then, October 13, 1994, the 77th Anniversary of the Great Apparition at Fatima, marks the birth of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. I pour forth the great love of My Sacred Heart to all. I am Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock.'

"Jesus has told us that Shepherds of Christ Ministries includes: the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, Shepherds of Christ Associates prayer chapters, various publications, including books, whatever else Our Lord directs us to undertake.

"As members of Shepherds of Christ Associates, you are an extremely important part of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. You have given great joy to the Heart of Jesus by responding to His invitation to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. As He draws you closer to His Heart and to His Mother's Heart as Associates members, He will fill you with an ever-increasing experience of His love, peace, and joy."

- From In the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Newsletter of Shepherds of Christ Associates
by Fr. Edward J. Carter S.J., Volume 1, No. 1, 1995. p. 2.

Jesus: My Movement has been given to
                spread the Priestly Writing and
                begin prayer chapters –
My Movement is to do what I
have asked for – to lead people
to love and to holiness, to
                lead people to union with
each other praying for the priests,
                the Church and the world.

                    My Mother appeared begging
you to spread the rosary and
                consecration and Morning Offering
                to school children.

                    My Mother appeared over and
over again and then God the
                Father put Mary's image on
                the building in Clearwater
for 7 1/2 years and you
                destroyed her image face –

Mary is the perfect handmaid of
the Lord – So I called servants and
handmaids to be holy, like Mary,
My perfect disciple and in love
to say "yes" to the Father's Plan
to spread the Priestly Writing –
                the prayer chapters, the rosary,
the consecration – to be children
of light – My little servants
of love – of having the burning
love of My Heart and the pure
love of Mary's heart to serve
the priests, the Church and the
                world.

Mary's Message
from the Rosary of August 27, 1996

Mary:  I stood beneath the cross of my Son, and my Heart was in such pain for I saw Him before my eyes. I saw Him covered with blood. I saw Him die. My Heart, my children, my Heart to watch my Son, but my Heart, my Heart, how I suffered for my little children of the world that give in to this world and give up the love of my Son. O my little children of light, I give you this message. Carry this light into the darkness for your Mother Mary, for I stood beneath the cross and I cried. I cried for the little ones. I cried for the young ones, the ones that do not care and will lose their souls. How do I make you see for you will not listen to me? What can I do? I come. I appear. I beg. I plead. I give you these gifts from my Son, and you reject me. I do not deliver messages very often anymore for I have been ignored. The message is the same. You do not read the messages I have given to you. Please help me. Help the little children. I appear. I appear. I appear, and I am ignored. I stood beneath the cross, and I cried. I cried, and my Heart was in such anguish for my little children, for I am searching for them this day as I searched for the Child Jesus. Please, please help me. I cannot hold back the hand of my Son any longer. I am Mary, your Mother. I ask you to help my children. You are my children of light.

end of Mary's Message

Jesus: I beg you to pray the prayers I have
given you in unity with deep love
with each other to serve God as
                a family of servants and
                handmaids bringing in new
                recruits, new apostles, new
                associates, new Apostles of the
                Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, praying
for the priests, the Church and the world.
This is the Movement My Father
gave to this earth to help
bring down saving grace for this election –
for people praying in union with
                you, obedient to God's will,
in love with one another –
with eager hearts full of fervor
and love for their brothers –

Priestly Newsletter Book II - September/October 1997

Scriptural Reflections

In all this Mary offers an example. Selfishness was totally foreign to her. She did not belong to herself. She belonged to God. She was not closed in upon herself. She was completely open to God. When God spoke, she listened. When God pointed the way, she followed. She realized that life is not a process a person masters by carefully mapping out one's own self-conceived plans of conquest, but a mystery to be gradually experienced by being open to God's personal and loving guidance.

Selfishness, then, did not close Mary off from God's call. Neither did fear. God asked her to assume a tremendous responsibility. He asked her to be the Mother of Jesus. Mary did not engage in a process of false humility and say that such a great role was above her. She did not say that she did not have the proper qualifications for this awesome mission. Briefly, she did not waste time looking at herself, making pleas that she was not worthy, telling the angel he had better go look for someone else. No, Mary did not look at herself. Her gaze was absorbed in God. She fully realized that whatever God asked of her, His grace would accomplish. She fully realized that although she herself had to cooperate, this work was much more God's than hers.

Mary's words, then, truly sum up what is the authentic Christian response at any point of life, in any kind of situation: "I am the handmaid of the Lord," said Mary, "let what you have said be done to me".

The Father's Will for Us - Our Source of Peace

  • Pope John Paul II instructs us: "The Church, as a reconciled and reconciling community, cannot forget that at the source of her gift and mission of reconciliation is the initiative, full of compassionate love and mercy, of that God who is love (see 1 John 4:8) and who out of love created human beings (see Wisdom 11:23-26; Genesis 1:27: Psalms 8:4-8)…He created them so that they might live in friendship with Him and in communion with one another.

"God is faithful to His eternal plan even when man, under the impulse of the evil one (see Wisdom 2:24) and carried away by his own pride, abuses the freedom given to him in order to love and generously seek what is good, and (instead) refuses to obey his Lord and Father. God is faithful even when man, instead of responding with love to God’s love, opposes Him and treats Him like a rival, deluding himself and relying on his own power, with the resulting break of relationship with the One who created him. In spite of this transgression on man’s part, God remains faithful in love.

"It is certainly true that the story of the Garden of Eden makes us think about the tragic consequences of rejecting the Father, which becomes evident in man’s inner disorder and in the breakdown of harmony between man and woman, brother and brother (see Genesis 3:12 ff; 4:1-16). Also significant is the Gospel parable of the two brothers (the parable of the ‘prodigal son’; see Luke 15:11-32) who, in different ways, distance themselves from their father and cause a rift between them. Refusal of God’s fatherly love and of His loving gifts is always at the root of humanity’s divisions.

"But we know that God…like the father in the parable (of the prodigal son), does not close His heart to any of His children. He waits for them, looks for them, goes to meet them at the place where the refusal of communion imprisons them in isolation and division. He calls them to gather about His table in the joy of the feast of forgiveness and reconciliation.

"This initiative on God’s part is made concrete and manifest in the redemptive act of Christ, which radiates through the world by means of the ministry of the Church." 13

136. THE FOURTH DAY

        A MEDITATION ON TWO STANDARDS

The one of Christ, our supreme leader and lord,
the other of Lucifer, the deadly enemy of our
human nature

PRAYER.   The usual preparatory prayer.

window at a former Jesuit Seminary

137. FIRST PRELUDE.   This is the history. Here it will be that Christ calls and wants all beneath His standard, and Lucifer, on the other hand, wants all under his.

138. SECOND PRELUDE.   This is a mental representation of the place. It will be here to see a great plain, comprising the whole region about Jerusalem, where the sovereign Commander-in-Chief of all the good is Christ our Lord; and another plain about the region of Babylon, where the chief of the enemy is Lucifer.

139. THIRD PRELUDE.   This is to ask for what I desire. Here it will be to ask for a knowledge of the deceits of the rebel chief and help to guard myself against them; and also to ask for a knowledge of the true life exemplified in the sovereign and true Commander, and the grace to imitate Him.

FIRST PART

THE STANDARD OF SATAN

140. FIRST POINT.   Imagine you see the chief of all the enemy in the vast plain about Babylon, seated on a great throne of fire and smoke, his appearance inspiring horror and terror.

141. SECOND POINT.   Consider how he summons innumerable demons, and scatters them, some to one city and some to another, throughout the whole world, so that no province, no place, no state of life, no individual is overlooked.

142. THIRD POINT.   Consider the address he makes to them, how he goads them on to lay snares for men and bind them with chains. First they are to tempt them to covet riches (as Satan himself is accustomed to do in most cases) that they may the more easily attain the empty honors of this world, and then come to overweening pride.

The first step, then, will be riches, the second honor, the third pride. From these three steps the evil one leads to all other vices.

SECOND PART

THE STANDARD OF CHRIST

143.   In a similar way, we are to picture to ourselves the sovereign and true Commander, Christ our Lord.

144. FIRST POINT.   Consider Christ our Lord, standing in a lowly place in a great plain about the region of Jerusalem, His appearance beautiful and attractive.

145. SECOND POINT.   Consider how the Lord of all the world chooses so many persons, apostles, disciples, etc., and sends them throughout the whole world to spread His sacred doctrine among all men, no matter what their state or condition.

146. THIRD POINT.   . . .

Morning Offering

My dear Father, I offer You this day all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings, my every breath, my every heartbeat, my every thought, all my actions, in union with Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in the Holy Spirit. I pray the Holy Spirit is with me every second today, enlightening me to do the Will of the Father and filling me with the fire of God's love.

I ask Jesus and Mary to be one in me in all that I do and I unite with all the angels and saints and souls in purgatory to pray continually to the Father for these intercessions, in this prayer, for this day.

For myself, I pray for grace-abundant grace, to know and love God more and more and to follow the Will of the Father. I pray to the Holy Spirit to transform me in the heart of Mary to be more and more like Jesus. I pray that I can forever dwell in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. I pray for conversion of all those I hold dear who need conversion. I pray for each member of my family that they will be filled with Your abundant grace to grow in their knowledge and love of God.

I pray for all my friends that they will receive abundant grace to carry out the great plan of the Father, that they will grow forever closer to Jesus' Heart through Mary's heart, that we will all be led by the Holy Spirit to do His work, that we will, together, carry out the plan of the Father as He intends us to, to spread the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary's heart to this world.

Jesus, I pray for myself so the Holy Spirit descends upon me and opens my heart to Your love so I will grow more and more deeply in union with You. I pray that I do not worry what other people think but try always to please the Father and do His Will. I pray that I may help lead many to Your burning love.

I pray for the following people in particular that they will be filled with the Spirit and grow deeply in their union with You, that they will receive abundant graces to know, love and serve You more. (Include special friends by name...)

I pray for priests the world over, for the success of the Priestly Newsletter, the Chapters and for the finances needed for the Newsletter. I pray for the circulation of the Blue Book messages, rosary meditations and tapes. I pray for all those involved in the publication of these messages.

I pray that You will shower Your abundant graces onto the priests reading the Newsletter the people reading and hearing the Blue Book messages and rosary meditations and all of Fr. Carter's publications.

We pray for the intentions we hold deep within our hearts, for our families and friends, for those requesting our prayers. We pray for children the world over and for the souls in purgatory. We ask God to shower His abundant grace on us and the members of our Shepherds of Christ Chapter so that we may grow more and more in our knowledge and love of God.

We consecrate ourselves to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. We pray for Father Carter, for Father Smith, for Rita Ring, and for John Weickert, for all leaders and helpers in the Shepherds of Christ Movement, for Shepherds of Christ Ministries, and Our Lady of Light Ministry. We pray for all those who are working in these ministries.

We bind ourselves and our children and our friends to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We place the precious blood of Jesus on ourselves, and all we touch, so that we will be protected from the evil one. We pray to St. Michael to cast the devil into hell.

We love You, God, we love You, we love You. We beg that we may receive the grace to love You more and more deeply. We adore You, we praise You, our beloved Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  end of excerpt

Jesus: This Movement is a big gift I
have entrusted to you from your
heavenly Father – to bring the
love of My Sacred Heart to the world.

                    Mary asked for conversion
                at Fatima, Mary asked for
devotion to Our Two Hearts –
a person serving in the Shepherds of Christ
is full of love to serve the
wishes of the Lady of Fatima
who has appeared 22 years to
you with the message of the Two Hearts
                and Fatima –

Jesus: At Fatima they jailed the children.
The devil wants to take out the
                Priestly Mailing, prayer chapters,
                the prayers, the spreading of
My love letters – the messages
of the Mass, the books of
                Fr. Carter.

The devil wants souls for hell. The
more a person gives into disobedience
and darkness the more his life is
just that, dark and he blames
everybody else for his darkness –
his world is a world of darkness –
he wants to operate in hearts
that give into him – making
right → wrong and wrong → right.
Satan is a liar. A person more
and more living in pride gives
into his pride in lies and self-will
to go deeper and deeper into darkness.

He then is so jealous of others
and envious of those doing good –
he is driven by negative energy
satan gives them to bring the
                faithful man down and down.
                Negative energy is supplied by
                satan to get angrier and
angrier, to lie, to cheat, to
                have power over others, and
                the person being driven given
into satan, is fired to tear
apart and divide – to destroy
unity and to say "no" to God
                with their free will and
                say "yes" to satan –

In a person giving into satan
and not repenting or lying to
                themselves about their sins –
they fail to be accountable for
                their actions and responsible
for the damage they do trying
to bring down the house with
                division and darkness. They are
                miserable disobeying God – they
                drive themselves with their
free will further and further from
love and giving and in their
                misery they can even get
                sadistical pleasure watching
                others suffer with their power
over them – to watch them squirm.

Satan wants souls for hell –
He wants to bring down the house –
he wants to stop love and fire
it up with hate – he doesn't
run out of energy to test
and tear down and divide and
a person of pride and anger,
                jealousy and envy, that refuses
                accountability for actions and
                responsibility for sinning against
                God and others –
can be so deceived they can
                become impudent that people
do not accept their sins and
fall to their knees under them.

                    Satan is hate –

                    Satan hates anyone praying
and spreading the Good News –
Satan works on a willing person
in pride – who seeks power
                over authority – power over
                Me – power – power – power –

The evil in men's hearts who
                refuse accountability and
                responsibility grows as satan
                becomes the Master they give
                into.

                Their wills become diseased,
                their right reasoning is very
                distorted and their indigence
                to spread their darkness
                shows the extent they will
go to – to rule in darkness –

                Response in Christ –

A man of love grows in the
light – They bring down fruit
                for the Kingdom.

In Blue Book 17 I gave the message
                Seedless, Barren, No Fruit
                on the Vine –

                    A man of holiness bears
fruit for the Kingdom of God. The
truth is in him. He knows his
                place under authority and
under God – A light is
                seen in him –

                    The darkness of satan can
be seen in the face and bodily
                movements as a man shows
                his disrespect of those praying
                in Church –
                    disrespect for just authority is
the way satan uses to try
                to control and take down
                the house –

                    He attacks structure
                and discredits just authority –
he wants to weaken the house
and he goes for the jugular vein –
Satan will stop at nothing to
tear down and try to usurp
                power to take down those
trying to bring good to men.
Satan will stop at nothing –
He has nothing to lose –
                And the person giving into
him – in pride – refuses
                accountability and responsibility
                for their actions –
                further their hearts become
                harder and harder and full
of hate as they allow satan to
                be in them operating more
and more like he does –
                tearing down the house –
                division – never unity –
                hate – not love –
                lies –
                hurting others and offending Me

                Satan comes and with negative
                    energy and more devils
                    reaches to the man to
                    give into him and do
                    his dirty work –

Doing dirty work – is the work of satan –
                lying after sinning and playing
                the victim is the deception
                that satan uses –
                I am love

1 John 4 7-21

My dear friends, let us love one another, since love is from God and everyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. Whoever fails to love does not know God, because God is love. This is the revelation of God's love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we might have life through him. Love consists in this: it is not we who loved God, but God loved us and sent his Son to expiate our sins. My dear friends, if God loved us so much, we too should love one another. No one has ever seen God, but as long as we love one another God remains in us and his love comes to its perfection in us. This is the proof that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us a share in his Spirit. We ourselves have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as Saviour of the world. Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God. We have recognised for ourselves, and put our faith in, the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. Love comes to its perfection in us when we can face the Day of Judgement fearlessly, because even in this world we have become as he is. In love there is no room for fear, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear implies punishment and no one who is afraid has come to perfection in love. Let us love, then, because he first loved us. Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother, is a liar, since whoever does not love the brother whom he can see cannot love God whom he has not seen. Indeed this is the commandment we have received from him, that whoever loves God, must also love his brother.

1 Corinthians 15:20-28

In fact, however, Christ has been raised from the dead, as the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. As it was by one man that death came, so through one man has come the resurrection of the dead. Just as all die in Adam, so in Christ all will be brought to life; but all of them in their proper order: Christ the first-fruits, and next, at his coming, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he will hand over the kingdom to God the Father, having abolished every principality, every ruling force and power. For he is to be king until he has made his enemies his footstool, and the last of the enemies to be done away with is death, for he has put all things under his feet. But when it is said everything is subjected, this obviously cannot include the One who subjected everything to him. When everything has been subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to the One who has subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.

Excerpt from Response in Christ by Fr. Edward J. Carter, S.J.

Chapter 10 - Christian Love (excerpt)

         3. Love of Man

"My dear people, let us love one another since love comes from God and everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Anyone who fails to love can never have known God, because God is love.  . . . Anyone who says, 'I love God', and hates his brother, is a liar, since a man who does not love the brother that he can see cannot love God, whom he has never seen. So this is the commandment that he has given us, that anyone who loves God must also love his brother." (1 Jn 4:7-21).

Our God is a God who knows and loves. This divine knowing and loving exists not only among the divine persons themselves. Father, Son and Holy Spirit also go out in knowledge and love to man and the rest of creation. Consequently, since our life in Christ is a share in God's life, we are called to love not only God, but also man and the rest of creation. The Christian has structured within his life of grace this deep desire – sometimes very latent – to give himself to his fellowman in various forms of love. If this desire is not thwarted, it can truly help change the face of the earth.

What are some of the characteristics of our love for others? First of all, our love of neighbor should exclude no one. It should embrace every single person the world over. As Christ's love for man was universal, so must ours be. And as Christ truly achieved good for men in His love for them, so must we. In other words, in our universal love for men we must be willing to act to help promote their good. We can at least do this in our prayer for their various material and spiritual needs. This constitutes no slight contribution of love, for prayer is one of the great means of channeling God's gifts to the world.

Secondly, our love for man must take the form of a life service in one form or other. Christ came to serve. He was fully the man for others. Can our lives be orientated in any other direction? Through our lives of loving service we make our contribution to God's creative and redemptive effort. God's love brought about creation and redemption. Our love united to His continues the process. Man and his universe are making their way back to the Father in Christ through the dynamism of love. It is interesting to note that this fact is at the heart of Teilhard de Chardin's cosmic evolutionary process in Christ.3 Teilhard, in contemporary thought patterns, is enunciating a traditional Christian truth.

Whatever the service is that we offer – as engineer, as doctor, as priest, as teacher, as mother, as nurse – it must be permeated with love. If it is not, it does not achieve its full effect in promoting God's creative and redemptive efforts.

At times it is only the motive of love which will keep a person faithful to his particular form of loving service. What but a deep love for her children supports a woman who has been deserted by her husband? What but a deep love of God and man can make a young man give up his family, the prospect of marriage, his homeland – all so that he may become a missionary priest? What but a deep love for the underprivileged can support an inner city worker amidst the squalor, the disease, the bitterness, the hopelessness which he meets daily? No, redemption cannot be continued without love – God's love or ours.

There is a final point concerning our service of love. We serve not only as individuals. At times we will be able to make our greatest contribution as a member of a group. This is an application of the communal dimension of Christianity. This common service could be as a member of a parish or civic organization, as a member of a religious order or a secular institute. There are numerous possibilities. One important thing members of such groups must realize: it takes love, sometimes great love, to remain properly selfless in group activity. There is no room in such group enterprises for the person who is always mistakenly looking for the wrong type of self-fulfillment at the expense of the particular organization. He who seeks his life shall lose it, and he who loses his life shall find it.

There is a third characteristic which must accompany our love for others. We must be willing to love without receiving love in return. This is a hard lesson for us to learn, but a most necessary one. Our Christian love is a participation in the love of Christ. And what is one outstanding feature of Christ's love? He has first loved man, and He has not always been loved in return. Yet Christ continues to love. In our love for others we also must be willing to take the initiative. God in His providence wants us to receive love from others also. But if this love seems to be lacking at times, or only faintly manifest, then God can supply for the lack. The important thing is that we ourselves keep on trying to love.

There is another characteristic of our love for man which pertains to those whom we directly encounter. Our love for these persons must manifest an appropriate human warmth. We are supposed to love God and man with our entire being. This means, in part, that our love is emotional. This is the way Christ as man loved, with His entire human nature. In the proper sense, Christ was a deeply emotional man. He wept in love over Jerusalem, and He wept in love at the tomb of Lazarus. We know also that the children loved to flock to Christ. He must have been a warm personality, for children shy away from those who are cold and austere. Our love, like that of Christ, must also be properly influenced by the emotions. Otherwise it is not a fully human love, and, therefore, not a fully Christian love.

In regard to our direct encounter with others, it is necessary that we be cognizant of another very important point. To a considerable extent, these persons experience God's love for them through ourselves and others like us. This is an application of the law of incarnation. God has loved man through the tangible, visible humanity of Christ. Christ no longer walks this earth, but the same principle holds true. We Christians are extensions of the heavenly Christ. In union with Christ we help in continuing the tangible, visible presence of God's love in this world. Through the love of our visible, concrete persons we continue incarnational love. In loving those whom I directly encounter in this manner – and let us remember I can love a person with a basic Christian love without "liking" things about him – I help to give them the courage to be and to become. Love received is a powerful force in developing the goodness in a person. Truly, when I love a person I help that person become what God destines him to be.

Furthermore, we in part show our love for others by allowing them to love us. A person grows by loving. In receiving love from others, therefore, we are loving them by giving them this opportunity to grow. We ourselves need this love which others give us. We are not self-sufficient beings; we are social beings who need others in so many different ways in going to the Father in Christ. We have to learn to open ourselves up to others and allow ourselves to be loved by them. At times in our pride we shrink away from this truth: that we need others – a need, of course, which must be always regulated by God's will. But we must resist these moments of pride that tell us we are self-sufficient. Remember, no man is an island.

         4. Love of Friendship

        a) The Nature of Friendship

...What is friendship, especially in the stricter sense of the word? It is a mutual self-giving in love. By the mutual gift of one another, friends desire to promote the good of one another. Although I-thou encounters are not limited to friendship, what M. Nédoncelle says concerning these relationships certainly can be applied here: ". . . love is a will to promotion. The I that loves is willing above all the existence of the thou. . ."4

As with all forms of true love, the love for a friend above all desires the total good of that friend. In my love for a friend I desire that this person become everything that he or she can become. But in my love for a friend I not only desire his total development. In the love of friendship I also give myself in a very direct, personal and intimate way to help achieve this growth.

$ 10.00

Guiding Light homily series — Reflect on the Word — Cycle B     The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand. $15

Guiding Light - Steadfast to the Son
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle A of the Litugical Year
$ 10.00

Guiding Light homily series — Steadfast to the Son — Cycle A    The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15

Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Litugical Year
$ 10.00

Guiding Light — Focusing on the Word — Cycle B    At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Litugical Year
$ 10.00

Guiding Light — Feed My Soul — Cycle C    In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15

Priestly Newsletter — 2000 #1 — CD.Christ is Our Strength — Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. It is so beautiful. "This brief passage contains one of the greatest lessons of the spiritual life. As we progress along our spiritual journey, we become increasingly aware of how weak we are in our—selves, but how strong we are in Christ. To experience our weakness involves suffering. The degree and kind of suffering can vary. The suffering can include the experience of the classical dark night of the spirit as described by St. John of the Cross. One of the main purposes of the dark night is to make a person keenly aware of his or her helplessness without God." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10
