                Once the chosen people crossed
                    the Jordon to the promised
                    land with Joshua, the people
                    worshipping pagan
                    gods would be a constant
                    temptation to God's people

                    covenant with God —   
 

Joshua 24: 1-13

C: THE GREAT ASSEMBLY AT SHECHEM

Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; he then summoned all the elders of Israel, its leaders, judges and officials, and they presented themselves in God’s presence. Joshua then said to all the people:

‘Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, "From time immemorial, your ancestors, Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River, and served other gods. I then brought your ancestor Abraham from beyond the River and led him through the length and breadth of Canaan. I increased his descendants and I gave him Isaac. To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave possession of the mountainous country of Seir. Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt. I then sent Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there; finally I brought you out. I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestors with chariots and horsemen, to the Sea of Reeds. They then called to Yahweh, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then, for a long while, you lived in the desert. I then brought you into the country of the Amorities, who used to live on the further side of the Jordan; they made war on you and I put them at your mercy; after which, you took possession of their country, since I destroyed them before you. Next, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beor to come and curse you. But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his power.

"You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, but the inhabitants of Jericho made war on you: Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I put them all at your mercy. I sent hornets ahead of you, which drove out the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the work of your sword or of your bow. And now I have given you a country for which you have not toiled, towns you have not built, although you live in them, vineyards and olive groves you have not planted, although you eat their fruit."

Matthew 19: 3-12

    Some Pharisees approached him, and to put him to the test they said, 'Is it against the Law for a man to divorce his wife on any pretext whatever?' He answered, 'Have you not read that the Creator from the beginning made them male and female and that he said: This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the two become one flesh? They are no longer two, therefore, but one flesh. So then, what God has united, human beings must not divide.'

    They said to him, 'Then why did Moses command that a writ of dismissal should be given in cases of divorce?' He said to them, 'It was because you were so hard-hearted, that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not like this from the beginning. Now I say this to you: anyone who divorces his wife-I am not speaking of an illicit marriage-and marries another, is guilty of adultery.'

The disciples said to him, 'If that is how things are between husband and wife, it is advisable not to marry.' But he replied, 'It is not everyone who can accept what I have said, but only those to whom it is granted. There are eunuchs born so from their mother's womb, there are eunuchs made so by human agency and there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake of the kingdom of Heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.'

 

                R. The theme of today's readings is
                    about God's love

                The first reading talks about
                    God's love for His people
                    and how God is saying all
                    He did for them out of love
                    to get them to the promised land
                    and how He wants them to love Him.

                And the second reading talks about
                    love of husband and wife
                    and God's love.

                Joshua is telling the people
                    how loving God has
                    been to them and
                    He asks for their love
                    in return —

                Now we see the Gospel
                    about love of man and
                    woman in marriage —

                There are degrees —
                    man sees his wife
                    heavy and old — and
                    not as good looking
                    as another and he is
                    to remain married —

                One may be unfaithful to
                    another —

                Jesus says —
                    they marry — the two
                    will be one flesh —

                Mark and Luke —
                    says

Mark 10: 1-12

After leaving there, he came into the territory of Judaea and Transjordan. And again crowds gathered round him, and again he taught them, as his custom was. Some Pharisees approached him and asked, 'Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?' They were putting him to the test. He answered them, 'What did Moses command you?' Luke 16: 18

'Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery, and the man who marries a woman divorced by her husband commits adultery.

 

Matthew 19: 9

Now I say this to you: anyone who divorces his wife-I am not speaking of an illicit marriage-and marries another, is guilty of adultery.'

 

                R. The disciples get the idea
                    divorce should not be —

                Some do not get married
                    for celibacy —

                Jesus is really saying
                    (1) Marriage is permanent

                    (2) Some are called to
                        celibacy for the
                        sake of the
                        Kingdom —

                Both are impossible
                    without God's help —

                We pray for the truth —
                We pray for those who
                    suffer —

                It is all about love —

                The love God gives us now
                    at Mass —

                The love God wants in our
                    lives —

                The love God gives us in
                    the beautiful day, the
                    sun, the birds, the
                    foliage — our air —
                    our gifts —

                Love God gives continually
                    to us

                Oh God thank You

A Prayer before the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

    Let me be a holy sacrifice and unite with God in the sacrament of His greatest love.

    I want to be one in Him in this act of love, where He gives Himself to me and I give myself as a sacrifice to Him. Let me be a holy sacrifice as I become one with Him in this my act of greatest love to Him.

    Let me unite with Him more, that I may more deeply love Him. May I help make reparation to His adorable Heart and the heart of His Mother, Mary. With greatest love, I offer myself to You and pray that You will accept my sacrifice of greatest love. I give myself to You and unite in Your gift of Yourself to me. Come and possess my soul.

    Cleanse me, strengthen me, heal me. Dear Holy Spirit act in the heart of Mary to make me more and more like Jesus.

    Father, I offer this my sacrifice, myself united to Jesus in the Holy Spirit to You. Help me to love God more deeply in this act of my greatest love.

    Give me the grace to grow in my knowledge, love and service of You and for this to be my greatest participation in the Mass. Give me the greatest graces to love You so deeply in this Mass, You who are so worthy of my love.
